Hi Guys! I'd like you to meet with some Dwarves... I took a few pictures (even don't ask how it was possible! and would like to introduce some of them, so you can make your own judgment... Axe-masterFamous Dwarven Champion and... infamous waster. He is never parting with his huge axe making use of it as ultimate argument in every quarrel... there is reason why he is on top position here... Mountain Clan ChiefPeaceful and very kind person... at least when his beer tankard is full. Mountaineer Same as his Chief but he prefers full barrel instead of mug of beer... All Mountain Clan Dwares are rather short ones, so they insisted to noticeable resize their pictures... Giant DwarfVery joyful and little sluggish at the same time. He is extremely proud of his beard (well, in fact as every other respectable Dwarf!) so he would never accept picture without beard visible in full. Problem is that his beard covered part of Dark Dwarf helmet on picture below... so I can sense a big troubles incoming... Rifleman (although he prefers "sharpshooter" He is a real pain in the neck! Imagine... smallish... err... not-so-tall dwarf constantly running and dangling around with ready to fire gun! Not surprising that there is kinda more free space even around his picture;) Black DwarvesOh, you even don't wanna know them, not mentioning meeting! Bold and grim, fully plate armored and definitely lacking sense of humor, with endlessly angry and gnarled long faces... luckily they posed in full helmets! BearWhat he is doing here? Well, but what can I do? His master simply declined shooting picture without his mount. So here he is... viciously trying break loose!!! Bear-riderReally nasty one! Adventurous and contradictious, usually with wry face! After watching in DwarfTV some "Play of Thrones" series he is considering throwing his cousin from Dwarven Throne as hobby! Dwarven KingJust look at him -he is easy and mellow... He knows without any doubts about cousin attempts but he believes that he got crushing, overpowering advantage... right in his hands. Well, of course these are just a few... wanna meet with others? If you are not scared so far, you can get to know them better - just check up PMD-F06 Dwarves set available on RPGnow: www.rpgnow.com/product/100839/Dwarves%3A-Set-1But you have been warned!

You know a dwarf is tough when he fills his tankard with bears
Looks very cool. If some of them had crossbows it would be perfect for Mordheim treasure hunter dwarves.

You know a dwarf is tough when he fills his tankard with bearsLOL... my bad - thanks! Looks very cool. If some of them had crossbows it would be perfect for Mordheim treasure hunter dwarves. No crossbows in this set (but they can be added in next one dwarven set). Problem is that crossbows looks not very impressive in 2D (I mean side-face/profile view of shooting figurine) and I'm afraid that this scale is not right/suitable for such small 2.5D elements so I should figure out some specific perspective figures posing.

You know a dwarf is tough when he fills his tankard with bearsHA! That's awesome! "I use this tankard for BEAR!" "Don't you mean you use it for 'beer'?" "I said what I meant!" That's the kind of dwarf that would ride a battleox.

You will not be afraid. ;D Some small 2.5D elements work right in 28/30 mm. scale too. ( from Sanity Studios' Militia Pack II ) PS: I hope that in the next dwarfs' set there will be a musician ( just to complete a command unit )

And a dwarf, on the top of a hill, blowing in a 3m long giant horn (taken from some giant beast by the ancients) could be a good touch for a so proud race

From Tolkien's The Hobbit:
...
"Now for some music! said Thorin. "Bring out the instruments!"
Kili and Fili rushed for their bags and brought back little fiddles; Dori, Nori and Ori brought out flutes from somewhere inside their coats; Bombur produced a drum from the hall; Bifur and Bofur went out too, and came back with clarinets that they had left among the walking-sticks. Dwalin and Balin said: "Excuse me, I left mine in the porch!" "Just bring mine in with you," said Thorin. They came back with viols as big as themselves, and with Thorin's harp wrapped in a green cloth. It was a beautiful golden harp, and when Thorin struck it the music began all at once, so sudden and sweet that Bilbo forgot everything else, and was swept away into dark lands under strange moons, far over The Water and very far from his hobbit-hole under The Hill.
...
I hope Peter Jackson does this scene justice! Fiddles, pipes and a drum suggest Irish or Celtic music. Clarinets and viols could add an early jazz element (not yet blues), and it all provides the setting for Thorin's harp melodies.
I always thought a racket (see your medieval reed instruments) would be a good instrument for dwarves, along with Tolkien's clarinets.
Dwarves are indeed a very musical lot! And they're carrying all these instruments ON A ROAD TRIP! Before motor vehicles! It would seem dwarf units would have regimental bands, not just a musician or two!
Have fun! Steve

I think this Roman horn could feel dwarven If i'm not wrong, Romans were 1,40 meters tall at average, so that thing could fit, more or less Still, i think it looks too "thin" and fragile for dwarves. About that Tolkien quote (which i've never seen) it clash too much with MY envision of dwarves. My dwarves will just play drums on the belly, but will never touch anything so "silly" and "delicate" like a flute, an harp or a clarinet. Sounds and music have to be heard to great distances, and take benefit of mountains and caves echoes. So, mid to low frequencies and great volume is what they want from an instrument. My dwarves. Mine.

Thanks ALL for suggestions and comments! I want you to know that even if I'm not replaying I'm frequently reading this thread gathering information and ideas - so there is a chance for Dwarven musicians (who knows, maybe even small "band"?) Parduz - I like 3m giant horn idea! kiladecus - I feel that I should provide at least some basic fantasy collection (some Mages/Sorcerers, Elementals, Beast/Dragons and obviously Orcs?), all more or less homogeneous in art-style aspect, before I start with others. But I'd like to assure you that it is worth to wait! ;D EDIT: and of course - I'm considering crossbows as well!

Five feet and ten ounces (about 1.72 m) for equites and first cohorts. The average height, even during the "lower" period, was, for a roman adult male, from 160 and 171 cm.

(who knows, maybe even small "band"?) ... An entire dwarf misician band? ... ... I'm really happy about that. I already have the original versions as paper soldiers (in 60 mm.) but my complete lack of skills does not allow me to turn them into paper miniatures. I love not only "current" paper miniatures but I also like their "history", their evolution, know their authors ... ( this proposal, I think, started about a decade ago) ... so I am more than happy not to lose this occasion ( "homogeneous in art-style aspect" ), and the adaptation and improvement of your work about your paper soldiers is exceptional imho. But I believe that the two offers have not exactly the same target. Very similar but not the same. Also as method of the drawing and the set's composition. So we will be really amazed when we see your next original products (but, please, do not abandon the sketches we've seen). Ciao Giorgio

Sorry for the guy here for this part of text in italian, it is all that i've found: The forum is here: www.contubernium.it/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=916This is just to tell from where i got the info (that Newspaper quoted here), not 'cause i pretend to be right.... in fact, i've been wrong anyway

The late Michael Crichton in Timeline goes into this type of a discussion. He basically considers it a myth of modern people to assume that in the past, without all of today's wonders of medicine and technology that people were inferior in height, weight, longevity, strength. Granted longevity was affected by accidents and violent death, but those whose lives were not cut short due to unnatural events lived the biblical three score and ten. There is substantial evidence, like Rhannon pointed out that folks were of similar height as those of today. It wasn't until late 1800s/early 1900s that they realized most of the medieval armor that was in good shape, was display armor done between 75% and 90% normal size. The beat up armor that is found would fit a regular modern man. We even think that during the American Revolution to Civil War period that people were smaller, also not the case.

...He basically considers it a myth of modern people to assume that in the past, without all of today's wonders of medicine and technology that people were inferior in height, weight, longevity, strength. Hmm... There's /as usual/ lot of academic discussion (you know, welfare influences general health/size/growth etc..) but... you can NOT treat ARCHAEOLOGICAL FINDINGS (!!!) just as MYTH! Please do some sources reading and you will find that in fact Parduz is right - due to various circumstances average 3-4 century ppls size/growth was ca.1,5m - there are lorica segmentata, helmets etc... archaeological findings which proof this - and de facto, as for now, these are final arguments... BTW this is why partly why 1,8+ (and up to 2m) North (aka barbarian) ppls vide Goth Tribes (Ostrogoth/Visigoth), and Central/East Sarmates etc and later, in medieval "dark ages" Normans/Vikings, healthy, tall and well builded/with good musculature COMPARED to average Roman Empire citizen were considered almost "giants"

Oh, I understand! "Give 'em what they want!" ;D I just know that there is a LOT of fantasy stuff out there. Your Unicorns and Doucorns are very unique. That is a feather in your cap! I just know that Dave Okum (for example) releases one set of something, then a set of something else, so he his hitting on many different genres. Just making a suggestion... I DO know your skills are amazing, and am patently waiting... As far as being worth the wait... there is NO doubt it is worth it. I guess I can visit the forum hoard and grab some scenery for the meantime. BACK ON TOPIC: Once again, your skills shine like polished diamonds! Truly amazing artwork!
