I am not the one to ask.
Unless you particularly want to color them yourself. there have been several cases where folks have put up uncolored figures and asked if anyone wanted to take a shot at them.

My advice: GIMP is awsome and free. Scan in your sketches at 300dpi. Try stuff, if you like it great, if not hit undo, try something else! It is fun for hours!

Nice - Samurais looks promising!
As for te software packages - you may test some free "vector" packages (Inkscape with SVG file format?) with "tracing" feature - which is helpful and often used for postprocessing scanned images.
When it comes to raster graphics - GIMP is REALLY OK, but if you like test OTHER(at your own!:) packages it's worthwhile to choose one with "layer" functionality - you can stack/overlay layers with different parts of figure, various textures, special effects etc... plenty of possibilities here and after some practicing flexibility and ease of use!
One more suggestion - sketches on plain white page and scan as VK (Errate: Cowboyleland) suggest in 300DPI preferably in Greyscale/BW mode (scanning software related) - but please spare your time - NOT be tempted and don't use any kind of Bitmap mode - ie strictly 2 colour black-and-white mode - which is used for scanning some kind of art (like inked pages in comic industry) - in fact for decent results this mode needs min.600 and preferably 1200+DPI resolution and it's definitely not needed for 30mm papercraft:) And then only after some "cleaning" and correcting, which is usually necessary (quite obvious issue but if kinda struggle please just let us/me know if you need help here), convert your scanned image into color mode (for this kind of projects RGB would be fine)
Cheers, Mesper

GIMP has layers. Yes, scan in black and white and trace onto a fresh layer. Check out the Design Figures thread of this forum.
