Serene Fist : a martial arts miniature line
« Thread Started on Jun 2, 2011, 5:16pm »

I could use a bit of input here.
I am developing a line of martial arts cardstock minis. I'd like to have sets of adversaries, kind of like Ninjas vs Samurai, that sort of thing.
What would be a logical adversary for Shaolin Monks?
Any requests?

Classic Xiaolin Monk opponents would be either bandits or soldiers.

Uh... how much "real" they have to be? I mean: could they be good for a "street fighter - like" game, or you are doing "historical" figures?
Anyway, there's so much martial arts in the world (from china to brazil) so i guess you could just google for a list of them and draw the appropriate figures...

... and, obviously, Chuck Norris ;D :P

:) Awesome book cover, okumarts. I am tempted to buy this title. Character posing is not my strongest skill.

I think, Adam nailed it. Bandits and Imperial/Provincial soldiers (cannon fodder for 5-year-old-monks). Don't forget some real nasty Boss Fighters with special ancient China weaponry and multiple gadgets (storms of mini darts, flying guillotine, double blades of all kind, hooks, chain weapons, etc.) - you know, the old evil Imperial governor, plotting his own schemes. 70 years old, but strong and evil.

okumarts, you should watch YouTube, best of WuXia cinema. Lots of ideas there, I think. Or read a wikipedia primer about ancient China. People will buy, what they recognize. So, bowing water carriers with thin mustaches, yellow skin and large round hats spring to my simple mind, if I hear "Ancient China". ;D Very rich and colorful topic. I wonder, how this will turn out.

Edit:

If you go the Fantasy China route, even more possibilities. China is rich of mythology. Lots of ghosts, witches, monsters. The game market has alot of material for you. Look for special supplements for diverse roleplaying systems or even rock-solid standalone Ancient China systems.

Have a look at this:

I loved this TV series as a kid.

I'm still waiting for someone to break down and license Avatar: The Last Airbender for a RPG or minatures game.

I watch Martial Arts movies all the time. If they don't get released in the western regions I order them straight from Hong Kong or Korea.

There are plenty of different types of Martial Art Themes. I will write a quick run down of some of the more popular themes.

Modern - Enter the Dragon, Ong Bak, Street Fighter

Shaw Brothers - You will notice many movies where instead of wearing the traditional Queue (long braid and half shaved head) they have a huge mop of hair with thick sideburns. This is because the actors would not shave their heads as it made them unable to play modern roles until their hair grew back.

1920-1940's China - IP Man, Once upon a time in China, even Kung Fu Hustle, Fist of Fury (Cheng Zhen). You get a mixture between western and traditional clothing. Japanese are the bad guys as they have invaded China.

Ancient China - There are tons of movies and books dedicated to the different time periods of china, each will focus on 2-4 different styles of martial arts. Spring autumn period is a famous one, such as Romance of the Three Kingdoms or just Three Kingdoms. Lots of video games, classic novels, comics, T.V. and movies based off of this period.

Wuxia - by far my favourite. This is the Marvel/DC of martial arts. Here you get some really colourful characters. They can walk on air, study poisons and by ingesting them inflict poisonous punches, LOTS of other things. Some good examples Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon, Hero, Warriors of Zu Mountain (love that one), Butterfly and Sword, Storm Riders and plenty more.

so here I've hit on just some of the Chinese ones. Japan and Korea also have a great selection to choose from.

Are you going to focus on a specific type or offer a bit of a mix? I can tell you that I would buy a lot of these if you kept making them, but I am a bit of a fan boy!

Adversary for Shaolin Monks would be if you want historical adversaries the Qing Dynasty as they set about the famous destruction of the Shaolin Temples. This scattered the monks and five fugitive monks Ng Mui, Jee Shin Shim Shee, Fung Doe Duk, Miu Hin and Bak Mei are credited for spreading Shaolin throughout China giving birth to all chinese martial arts in all its various forms.

You could also have bandits, Chinese ghosts and demons as well.

Martial Arts Heroes would be another cool set. I could supply a list of names and descriptions if you wanted of Chinese to Japanese heroes both fictitious and historical.

Thank you so much Adam! I hope the books can be of use. Almost all the characters in the books are from RPG campaigns I have run.
OK. I'm thinking the first set will be Shaolin Monks vs Bandits. I want to keep it relatively historical, but the Shaw Brothers movies were a big influence on me when I studied Kung Fu in the early 80s.
Then I'll do a Heroes vs Minions set followed by a Heroes vs Bosses set.
I just need a name for the line.

While I think it would be great to see some period Asian figures, (especially samurai and ninja, which I think have been lacking in paper form for a while and would definitely buy) what I would really love to have access to is a set of modern-style Asian-inspired figurines, stuff like urban ninja, street samurai, corporate swordsmen, burglar/infiltrator types, etc.--things that would go great on a gritty urban table ala WWG Mayhem.

I'm not necessarily talking straight-up cyberpunk, more present-day or near-future (stuff like TMNT).

SQUEEEEEE!!!!!!

Ok sorry but you just made my day man. I love Kung Fu flix and these minis will be an instant buy for me.
While I agree with dcbradshaw (one of my game group) that we could really use some urban ninja, I really really wanna see these sets first. (sorry dc)

Just the sketches are awesome...I cant wait to see the finished projects.

OK, the first set is just about ready to go... I should have a teaser image up later tonight.
I've settled on "Serene Fist" for the name of the mini line. It sums up my approach to martial arts.

Samurai and Ninja are really neglected on the paper miniature market. I remember a samurai in full armor by Jim, and nothing more!

These are some sales waiting to happen!

Especially Ninja. Ninja are a common enemy in more than one genre, and very few suitable models outside of white metal.

Hey Hackbarth,
If you need a few Samurai there are a few in the Imperfect Orient Set along with a few Monks and some normal civilians.

Hope these help.

NOTE TO SELF: Convince self on June 22nd that Monks and Bandits are a perfectly reasonable addition to MDRG and Flying Lead Games.

ADDENDUM: If unable to convince self of neccesity of Monks and Bandits in MDRG and Flying Lead start Song Of Blades And Heroes campaign to justify addition of Monks and Bandits
