The interchangeable parts idea is ingenious! I might use that for some of my paper wrestling figs!

Sorry for the delay on this. I have a new laptop and I discovered that my scanner is so old (1999) that it isn't supported by my new operating system. I guess I'm in the market for a new scanner. Anyway, I have a few figures drawn, but I thought I'd document the creation of one figure and just muddle on and do the rest. So to start. Here are some elements for the first figure. I am considering a shield, but the arms may not support it. The accessory might be a helmet. We'll see. I will be switching up the weapon in photoshop once the figure colours are sorted out. It'll be faster that way.

Hitting a bit of a wall in Illustrator, but nothing I can't sort out with a few hours of problem solving. There is a reason I don't make sets like this too often, but they certainly have an appeal.

I'm close to admitting defeat on my current approach with this project. I have worked for days and have accomplished very little. It may be my lack of familiarity with Illustrator, but it's also just the technical aspects that are overwhelming. I am also unable to make the file small enough to be as viable as I'd like. I'm needing to rethink my approach on this one.

Out of curiosity, what are the problems? I'm asking 'cause i use CorelDraw at office (which have layers) to export to PDF, and the layers are exported without any problem. We were wondering if Illustrator could be something we need, but being me the one that draw, and being me so fond in CorelDraw, we always delayed the decision..... so, i'd like to know what kind of wall you hit.

CorelDraw is a similar and great program. I used to use it when I taught computer art. It makes awesome fonts. The wall I'm hitting is that each figure has four components that are further subdivided into three options. They are: Head (with three sublayer options), Torso Option 1 (with three sublayer options), Torso Option 2 (with three sublayer options) and Legs (with three sublayer options). The complexity of drawing all that is one thing, scanning, changing raster to vector, organizing it in Illustrator with properly scaling the figure elements, lining everything up just so and then making sure that each layer and sublayer lines up and can be turned on and off properly to customize each figure. It's a bit overwhelming. I may get this finished, but it will be the only set like this I will ever make.

mmmh.... appears to be something like what i do (altough i have to deal with tech drawings, so i bet my problems are easier). If i understand right, then the problem is'nt the feasibility of the job, but "just" how tedious and time consuming it is.... am i right? Do you think that CorelDraw will be better on doing it (thinking at all the "snap" modes it haves, grouping, ungrouping etc.)?

I do not know this matter ( technical ) but I think that this is a test. If you do not try you do not know.
Now you can finish this set or use pieces for traditional new sets.
Ok, this is a job for you but, imho, this also must be a pleasure and not only depressing.
You make great works because you like them and you enjoy make them ( and you have great skills, not everyone has these ).
So you go on with what you think is best for you.
In a hurry customer. ;D

I know I can do this, but it's the time and effort that will be prohibitive for future sets like this. I will have to make the traditional sets more awesome to make up for a lack of customization options. I will definitely be proud of this accomplishment, but like running a marathon, it will be unlikely I will do it again anytime soon.

Ok - that's a new one... a bearded sword.. Looks good so far. Will it be completed models or a multipart "do-it-yourself" set where we can combine as we like? /Cobra

OK, I had a bit of a breakthrough with this set (which will be enormous). I am currently aiming for sometime before the end of May. I'm looking at May 30th or so. There will be massive test building to be done so I will need to invest in some ink and get busy. More preview photos coming later this week. Attachments:

I am just glad to hear that you are ok. I feared you were abducted by aliens... I almost called the Canadian Police Dept. (Inside joke). These look AMAZING! Better yet, you are planning on releasing these next week?! Good thing I just bought ink today!! I can't wait to get these! I am going to have a whole new batch of figures for my dungeon game! Ya-HOO! (Translation: For RevGunn, "Yee-HAW!" For the rest of the world, "YIPPEE!")

WOW. Great, great figures. The elf pose is a bit weird, but the character of all of them is bumping out from the screen. Great.

OK, I have finally been able to work on this set. It is very labour intensive, but I'm confident it will be an innovative and fun set for everyone involved. I'm aiming at a July 25th release date.
