 Goblins Galore!
« Thread Started on Feb 20, 2012, 8:41pm »

I am working on rough sketches for a goblin set. It's going to be a big crazy set full of multiple poses and weapon types. I'm thinking something like 15-20 goblins total! I want it to represent their hoard-like numbers, and crazy, vicious, and humorous personalities.

I figure the orcs will need some underlings to kick around and take frustrations out on in between raids. Also, what GM doesn't need oodles of goblins to throw at their adventurers.

These will be in a rather traditional style of goblin. Big heads with large noses and ears, and beady little red eyes. Oh, and green, of course. No sketches yet to post, but I will once I get a little further along in the process.

any chance tha you could add a layers to have them in light or heavy armor or even robes in the GW "nightgoblin" style? I just picked up the dwarves the other day and love them so I'll be looking forward to these.

"These mountains were full of hollow places underneath; huge caverns, and winding ways, some with water running through them, and some shining with all colors of the rainbow when a light was taken in...

"Now in these subterranian caverns lived a strange race of beings, called by some gnomes, by some kobolds, by some goblins...

"According to the legend... instead of going to some other country, they had all taken refuge in the subterranian caverns, whence they never came out but by night, and then seldom showed themselves in any numbers, and never to many people at once. It was only in the least frequented and most difficult parts of the mountains that they were said to gather even at night in the open air. Those who had caught sight of any of them said that they had greatly altered in the course of generations; and no wonder, seeing they lived away from the sun, in cold and wet and dark places. They were now, not ordinarily ugly, but either absolutely hideous, or ludicrously grotesque both in face and form. There was no invention of the most lawless imagination expressed by pen or pencil, that could surpass the extravagance of their appearance... As they grew misshapen in body they had grown in knowledge and cleverness, and were now able to do things no mortal could see the possibility of. But as they grew in cunning, they grew in mischief and their great delight was in every way they could think of to annoy the people who lived in the open-air storey above them."

That's an excerpt from pages 3 and 4 of The Princess and the Goblin by George MacDonald. It was originally published in 1872, and Tolkien had read it as a boy. I believe these are the goblins Tolkien had in mind when Bilbo and the dwarves encountered them in the Misty Mountains.

I like Alan Lee's illustrations of orcs and goblins best of all.

I also like Brian Froud's visualization of goblins, as seen in Labyrinth.

I don't care that much for GW/WoW orks and goblins, though I still have plenty of them in my collection. They just seem to be different critters from Tolkien's.

Have fun!

Well, maybe I should do a goblin design poll like what I did with the orcs. Or perhaps just have enough variation in the designs that it doesn't conform to any particular style. I think for the most part the variation lies in the head, so it will be easy to change out heads.

As for night goblin robes, that is certainly possible, but it will alter the outline, and therefore would require multiple cut files. Or one of the versions wouldn't have a cut file. Or they could just be robed in the first place. Lots of options.

I want the set(s) to have large appeal, so that there will be more uses for them, so I will work to that end. Thanks for everyone's input and suggestions. Work has been killing me lately, but I'll get some sketches put up as soon as I can.

I like the idea of same poses but with a robe overlay. Creates the possibility of two different sets.

Give them all cloaks and the cut file will go around the edges of the cloak so the layer with the robes (under the cloaks) wouldn't need a whole other cut file.

Yeah, even I haven't heard from him for a while (aside from a very quick email about future set size).

Here are my rough sketches of the goblins. I'll start working on these again and get them going. Nik is starting to put together the new Bellicose rulebook, and it's in color. He needs figures for diorama photos for the new book, so I need to get crackin' on some more figures for the armies.

For smaller creatures I would normally put a whole bunch in a set, but I want to release these in three smaller sets with about 6 figures per set. The smaller sets will sell for 1.95 instead of our usual 3.95. We're hoping that will hit the sweet spot for some buyers who prefer not to pay the 3.95 we usually charge for a set.

These still need a lot of work, and I still need to draw some more, but I'm working on them now, so let not your hearts be troubled. :)

I love these goblins! If you don't do one, I'll find a good 2-D wolf somewhere, maybe Oversoul Games, and convert those archers into 2.5-D wolf-riders!

Have fun!

Try to use Dario Corallo Goblin Riders. his Pieces doesn't have backs, but his wolf riders are double sided. It should be simple to "dismount" one of his goblins to put one of labrat's in.

http://www.thefantasytrip.org/pieces.php

Of course that a set of mounted goblin riders from Sanity Studios would be much better. Three to four mounted figures would seem a fair value for 2.00 US$

LOL. Already planning a mod on a set that hasn't even been released. Now I think that's a first for Sanity Studios.

I'll take that as a vote for wolf mounts and bring it to Aaron to see what he can do.

Eh, yeah... Actually I think he had issues with his drawing tablet pen missing. That and he works grave-yard shift every other week and has 2 and 1/2 kids. I'll let him know we are all awaiting his next set release.

As for these goblins, last I saw him I think he only had 2 other figures to sketch and then he could get to the computer work. And that was a week ago.

Sorry for the delay. I'm totally back on these. I spent about a week and a half searching for the pen for my pentablet, but I have it now, and I'll be working on the first set of goblins some more tonight.

Thanks for your continued interest.

Doing the backsides has to be my least favorite part of the process. ::) I will soldier on and get the backs done for the goblin archers.

I am rushing these through without as much feedback as usual from my design squad (Parduz), but I am already behind my release schedule that I had planned out due to my pentablet fiasco. So I'm trying to get back up to where I wanted to be. The figures will be still good enough I think. Hopefully I won't get too many complaints about the quality. ;)

Alright. The sketches for the backsides are done. Now I just have to do the inking for backs, and then it's all coloring from there. Making progress, bit by bit. :)

Complaints on YOUR work? REALLY? C'mon! You do AMAZING work, and it ALWAYS looks incredible.

I am actually excited about this because I am into my "Dungeon Crawl" phase currently. These are coming along at a great time.

(Now, I just need to dig out my Tangle Roots! They are like a trap AND a creature ALL-IN-ONE! Two times the fun and twice the danger)!

Are you going to do these in layers like the Orcs? I'm afraid to ask, but *some* Goblins are green, and *some* people do theirs red... I was just asking.

I vote for either "light" green/ "bright" green OR olive! Either way, I am excited about these.

No problem Parduz. I just wanted to get them done as fast as I could, so as to get them out quickly. No worries.

The artwork for these goblin archers is finished. I made some cool color options in the layers, so you can mix and match some different things.

I wish I could post a preview right now, but I'm at work, so I'll have to post one later. Nik is now working on the formatting, and cut files, etc. Hopefully you'll all be cutting out spanking new goblin archers soon.

Here is a look at some of the color options that will be available via layered pdf. Mixing and matching gives lots of options, even weird stuff like purple skin if you want. Me personally, i'm going with green.
