Sexy/Naked minis (worry a bit, there's a clown) « Thread Started on Dec 13, 2010, 2:17am »
I've been wondering about this for a while, and the Nudity-thread sparked my interest. Let me tell you why: it's something that does not exist as such, so maybe it's a niche?
What I've been wondering, would anyone use naked minis if they were avaliable? Say, for the darker kinds of rps, for use as prostitutes, slaves, victims... And I'm not talking females, but mixed genders.
Disclaimer: I believe that with these themes everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I don't mean to discuss the issue of nudity itself here. Also, I don't think that nudity in itself is bad for kids. It's what you use it for (in terms of minis), and you can do disturbing stuff with dressed minis if you're so inclined.
Oh, and to clarify, I mean naked as in not dressed, not as in 'engaged in any kind of activities'. And to clarify again, thanks to kiladecus for opening the other thread, and please don't take this one as bashing your ideas and ideals. Because it's not.
(Of course, I might still put them on my to-try list.

Thinking at human figures, the only way i see them needed is in a prehistoric setting or in a ancient greek olympiad boardgame, and just if you want to be historical accurate. It is not a problem of morality, it is a pratical question: - at least in the last century, a naked prisoner is know to be less prone to retailate and to fight back. I think that a naked fighter is less effective than a a dressed one. - Colored clothes allow you to easy distinguish factions. Said this, i see a very tiny room for any setting that have volountary naked humans AND an interesting miniature game. RPGs may be different.... or i may just lack of imagination.
About other creatures (demons, cherubins, whatever else have at least an half part like human anatomy) i don't have usually any problem.... i find a bit odd when anatomy parts are hidden by the weapon or a very lucky flapping part of clothes....
.... but i also play with pre-teen and i know how they react to any exposed body part, and depending on the players it may drag down a good game session.
So, to summarize, to me naked minis may have less value than clothed ones just 'cause i'll use them less times.

I would have to agree... on a few points. Nudity shouldn't be avoided... And nudity is most appropriate when true to the nature of the character. I am most often disappointed when I see mermaids, succubi, and harpies that aren't topless... In MY mind, they should be topless.

Well, here goes (I know EVERYONE was waiting to hear this...)!
I think that if you were going to justify having naked minis (as Parduz so eloquently put it), then do it... but only if it makes since.
Do mermaids have shells that they make into bras? Some do, some don't.
Should dryads have on clothing? Not necessarily?
"WHAT? Is someone else writing under Kiladecus's name?"
No. It's STILL me. I think that if you are playing a game, and Lady Godiva strolls along, that is up to the DM. If you have your elves run naked through a pasture, then again, that is up to you.
Do I have the need for these? No.
If I had a setting where we would encounter nymphs, they wouldn't need to be nymph-o's! You can show nudity on a figure (like a wood nymph or fairy) without showing nipples, or over-enlarged breast. Mid-drifts, of COURSE.
I simply didn't see how historically accurate (even by stretching it) would revisit women wearing modern styles of today. (I really liked the dusters, BTW, Rev!)
So, I think it comes down to personal preference, and if it makes sense!
(Remember my example about a viking carrying a pulse-rifle...?)
Anyway, your input is much appreciated. Just to clarify, I don't want to do naked females only, but naked males, too. I don't mean to be sexist here - either way .

If it helps to muddy the water at all - I remember reading somewhere about a Chinese general using naked dancing girls to distract his enemy while his own army set about winning the battle. I not trying to have a moral point of view just that it may still be working 1700 years later! Nudity and sex are not the same thing. In context nudity is fine by me, but I'm not a politician so it is hard for me to justify where and when it is correct or incorrect for everyone.

I bill myself as a heretic, so here it goes: IMO actually mini's aren't always useful. If you want to create a feeling of horror don't reduce the monster or its victims to pieces of paper (or lumps of lead) on the board. You may need markers to show position for tactics, but the more you make the figures representational the less active the images in the players imagination are.
The novelty of new chess men wears off in a few moves, then it is the same old game.
Ancient celts wearing nothing but woad, I might find a use for those!

I fixed the thread title.
As for nudity in combat, there's something else that came to mind. The Echani from Star Wars, women who excell in martial arts. They hail from the KotoR games, and they are said to fight or at least practice naked. Speaking of Star Wars, there's one book where two thugs attack Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson) in a shower, i.e. he's naked. Imagine their surprise when their usual tactic of using their victims' nudity to their advantage doesn't work and he beats them up.
I think the point I'm trying to make is that any kind of clothing that offers protection (say, against blows) limits your ability to move, and being able to move quickly is the basis of some fighting styles. So why bother dressing up in leather if it means you won't be able to evade the blow? And using thin cloth doesn't make a difference a the practical point of view. I guess I'm just saying that it's not that far fetched to fight naked - if only to see your oponent's jaw drop before you kick him down .
And yes, you guessed right, I'm trying to drag the topic away from that clown .
Is the clown scary because he's like, shaped like me, but almost naked...or because he shaves?
I don't know. I think that what "scares" me is the assumption that, with this kind of shape, you must have a very distorted mind to wear that kind of underwear and shave everything.... To my eyes it makes it more "larval".
Maybe 'cause I have more or less the same shape, and i can't ever imagine me completly shaved
LOL With my 180cm x 120kilos i'm a bit too tall to be a believable ancient roman Seriously, they was little people. That's why they had the gladius instead of a "real" sword.

Move over, Russell Crowe! There's a NEW gladiator in town!!
Actually, what few people realize is there were females that fought in the arenas, as well as males. Most of them wore little to no clothing. As a matter of fact, in Crete, there was a colosium that coined the name "GLADIATOR." According to Wiki, the first time there was a female in the arena, there was a male fighter, too. They released a tiger, and after a few minutes, the tiger devoured the female. The male warrior was dismissed as the "winner," and gained his freedom. Two weeks later, he died of leprosy. So, you see, all things considered, the tiger was ... (that's right) "glad 'e ate her."

I could do this all day...
Nah, the tiger would have been fine, the only animal other than humans that is affected by leprosy is the armadillo.... research on leprosy was really difficult as it wouldn't take on any of the standard lab animals (puppies, mice and bunnies) but eventually they discovered that it would take hold on the footpads of the armadillo. How desperate do you think they were before they found that out? How many animals would you test before you thought 'well, that didn't work, how about we rub a leper on an armadillo's feet?'

@jose: that is both interresting and unexpected.
I also tip my head to everyone so skillfully derailing this thread, and to parduz, seconding what afet said.
As for the minis, I think if I ever get the urge to do them (that came out wrong) I will, seeing how there might be a market. But as usual that's a big "if".

There's a place for every kind of figure imaginable, some players like realism, so chainmail bikinis are unlikely, but others love that stuff. I like my minis stylised, so just about anything is cool. We played a lot of gangs of mega city one....... there's a setting where style is everything. Lots of modern settings are like that, as for fantasy, well, I think the clue is in the name

As much as I love a good chainmail bikini, I have to admit they are very unrealistic and are pure fantasy. That's why my wife prefers something a little more practical... she wears a chainmail dress with a leather corset for added midriff protection (^_^)
If someone would like to immortalize her as a paper fig, please be my guest... she would get a kick out of it. And, no... that's not me with her...
There's also her "studded leather" armor as well. And no... that's not me either (^_^)

I feel like such a hypocrite! I would preach against exposing our paper minis and yet I myself have created at least one naked and a few (some would say) scantily clad female paper minis. -visit sanitystudios.com to purchase these
Really though mine aren't that bad. The naked Stodge I did is anything but provocative, and the females I did are scantily clad only by strict codes of modesty.
In general, however, I am in favor of modesty. It is my opinion that civilizations begin their downward spiral when the role of womanhood is cheapened and no longer respected, and when a people loses its morality. Just my own personal thoughts on the matter.
