Some ideas I'm playing with. I've got a couple more ready to go (now that I am back from Vacation) I have some sci-fi terrain built. I'd like to assemble the rest of the Humanoid Animals and the 2.5d versions of the Cyborg slaughterers. ~F

Am I absent-minded or is that the first time I've seen that beveled hybrid? It looks awesome...

Man I really hope that Mel uses some of these in his game book &/or as banner ads promoting the game.
Floyd - just sexy.

The last one looks like night vision or a closed circuit TV

Am I absent-minded or is that the first time I've seen that beveled hybrid? It looks awesome... thanks! ;D This is the 1st time I've photographed one. But you can see samples of them in the GunCrawl recolors thread here. I was trying to keep within Jim's size ratio incase he wanted to use any of them. Which is why it is in a banner format. I intentionally left room on each end for logos, text, etc. While keeping the focus front and center. Yep the last one was meant to imitate that scan-line CSTV feel. ~F

What would be cool (and I don't know if it's possible) would be a flash banner that actually flickered between the top colored one and the night vision one!
That would look sweet!
ETA: the more I look at it, what would look even COOLER is if in the color photo you don't see the aliens coming to attack the clueless soldiers, then when it flashes to the nightvision view you see the aliens surrounding the soldiers!

Nice!

Yea, these are perfect! I really like the bevel look on the alien, I will steal this idea now, and use it on the newer designs, thank you.
You have the right idea for the focus of the action and keeping the figures centered.
I do want to know how your doing your lighting, regular lighting, then using effects to darken the shot, or are you shooting them lit with a dark background. I have always thought I'd use a pure black backdrop then light the elements in front, then use a gradient clear in the middle fading to black or deeply shaded around the sides.
I like the night vision version as well. These would make for some really compelling rule book images as well. JIM

I like the night vision version as well. These would make for some really compelling rule book images as well. JIM For all the photos I've posted thus far. I've just taken them at my work bench table with 1 source light and a couple of simple thrown together light reflectors(pieces of white foam core or scraps of paper). The light is a 150w natural light bulb. No other lights are on so the room is dark. The subject is usually about 1-2 feet away from my shelves at the back of my table so that makes it easier to drown it out as noise in the background. I just take shots at various angles, and focal lengths. But I keep the Aperture set at around 10(which is right about the sweet spot for portrait work). And I don't use the flash. I hold the camera or mount it on the tripod if I cannot hold it steady enough. I also try to keep the subject off of the ground. The Urban setting above was about 6 inches off the table(there are some paint pots underneath). So as not to get unwanted light reflections from below. Or at least to have a measure of control over how much and from where it comes from that direction. I do most effects in post with Photoshop and a nice suite of Photo filters to build on a concept. Nik Color Efex pro. I'll also use Photshop's Render:Lighting Effects, gradients, selective blurring. Another nice filter tool is Noise Ninja. Probably my most favorite tool, along side some of the AWESOME Nik effects. Sure it's a noise reduction tool. But if you think creatively...wow can you make images pop...! As an aside, Viveza(also by Nik) is a great tool for general photography and tonal adjustments. ~F I have two 500 watt photo bulbs and reflectors I use for bigger shoots. And a few foil reflectors. Backdrops are just sheets, rolls of colored paper, etc. I also made a light box for small item shoots.

Cool, thanks for the detailed background. I am going to try something similar with a general fill light and a single spotlight from the front.
I'm also going to experiment with shooting elements separate, like background, mid-ground and foreground elements as different photos and mesh them together to create a more 3D looking environment, and least stylistically. I have always wanted to try to make a sort of moving picture like the old video games where there were three layers of images moving at different speeds. Of coarse I'll need something like Flash to animate something like this, so may well never do it in that case. JIM

One other shot this one is using Jim's original colored TerraForce soldier and Hybrid Stalkers. I implied a bit of movement. And the last one I tried a new painterly effect. ~Fl0yd

Bob Ross, eat your heart out. "And here we have a happy little alien. And why not make another happy little alien to keep him company. Maybe a whole hoard." You have a knack for setting these up, Floyd. I actually like this better than the first bar.
