Okay, don't get excited. Nothing to see yet. However I'm quite interested in doing a total remake of my Star Trek mini maker. I'd quite like to do it in Flash and make it not unlike Hero Machine.
Firstly I need to learn Flash. I also need to learn vector graphics and Inkskape (or at least, learn them properly).
What I will do, however is document any work I do here.
The very first thing I really want to do is design new character art and I've been massively inspired by Spacejacker's work in the next thread up. So we'll see.

Aw shucks! I have figured out how I want to do the colouring now, and rather freakishly it turns out it's similar to the way you do yours.. So thanks!

Hi scarecrow,
I found your Star Trek mini maker a while back and played with it a bit.
It was a while back, and I seem to recall that it was difficult to make several figures at once. I think that you had to save each one as a graphics file.
Will you be doing anything so you could make several figures at once and print?
Oh yeah, would you be interested in designing an original version of the Galileo 7 to go with the TOS figures?

I imagine in Flash there'll be a ton of wacky features that can be put in. I know it's a long way off (and kudos for generating an excuse to learn a new program), but I'm looking forward to it.
Obviously, it'll be ST-focused, but any extra bits and bobs you can throw in there would be awesome.

Well, well. It appears the Geocities site has finally died! At long last!
To celebrate this, I've begun work on the Star Trek Miniature Maker 2.0
Sadly, not the all-singing, all-dancing flash app that I was thinking of, but it will be an improvement.
For a start, there will be no more dragging. I've got a script that allows you to click on the desired item and it will appear in exactly the right place in the workspace, replacing any existing image. I'm also able to place all the elements in a seperate scrollable window, so that the figure you're building will always be visible on screen.
This also means I can make the figures 300dpi without making the page about ten feet deep.
I'll also improve the artwork. Having a higher res image will help this also.
Finally, PNG files allow you to have anti-aliased transparency, so no more jagged edges on the objects either.
You'll still need to do the old 'print screen' trick to save your work sadly, but until I find a script that will isolate a section of the screen and save it as an image file, them's the breaks, I'm afraid.
I'll try and get a sort of 'beta' version up an running as soon as possible. I'll post here when anything happens.

About how to save the final image, i'd like to suggest to do the whole thing with PHP: I played with some graphic stuffs some times ago, and (depending which version your host has) PHP can generate single images built by code just overimposing other images. Here you'll see my "work": www.gmdb.it/ihms/ipark/badge/badgeform.phpIt is a joking badge maker for my "bike club". If you play with the combobox you'll see different images over the whole "card"... which is a single image generated by the PHP. The only problem i found at that time is that you can't set the DPI. I'm a VisualBasic and a C++ programmer, and i feel that if you can manage Javascript you can do PHP as well. Tell me if you need the sources as example.. Hope that helps.

That's actually very very cool. It would probably default to 72dpi as an image, but even if it did that, the image itself will be a specific size, so you could always change the printable size in a paint package. It removes the clunky 'print-screen' nonsense. It does require me to learn PHP though, and I rather feel I'm going to have my hands full drawing for the forseeable future Crow

Well, when i was building that thing the DPI field of the image was just empty. Maybe it was fixed in this 2-3 years.
Note that you may still using your Javascript "editor", if you wish, saving the user choices (model, shoes, weapons etc) in variables, and just call a single PHP function passing that variables to produce the final, hi-res image: this also will allow to have, on the client side, just the lo-res images.
