Returning to an earlier discussion about bases for spaceships...I had to work a Josh Ritter concert and to avoid going insane listening to songs about Idaho I put this together in Photoshop; I was trying to avoid using lots of black ink so I went for more nebular swirls to lighten up the image. The 25mm Hex-Flat bases with this starfield texture look like this; Should it be darker? More suns? Feedback welcomed. If it's groovy then I'll knock out some starfield bases for the two different types of Hex bases and then post them on my site.

LOOKS GREAT! I would just darken up the white areas some so as not to distract from the color of the models. Or to blend in a little better on black playing boards. Still a great looking starfield. If your looking for inspiration or just a cool site to go looking through for a few hours give this a try. hubblesite.org/ It's a site dedicated to the Hubble telescope and its pictures. Granted most of the images are enhanced or even not in the visual spectrum but still really cool! Nate

Actually, it was the Hubble site that inspired me. ;D You can use many of the images there simply by sending a note to NASA saying you plan to do it (very informative EULA there) but I wanted to make my own. This is the final version of Starfield ver.2 (ver.1 looked like spilled cereal ), I darkened up the background a little and added a 4px black border inside the hexes to help darken and blend for black playing surfaces. I'll add it to my site tomorrow.

I would suggest making a bunch of different bases like this ,but then I thought that only the hexes would really work well. Maybe circles. I do plan to make some space and naval specific bases in the future, so for into the future I don't know... JIM

JIM Well, my reasoning was that many space combat games use hex bases for facing, so I was going to stick with them. I'll do all of the hex-flat style base sizes today and upload them. I'll do the other styles if I get requests. Or interested parties could just download the starfield texture from my site and make their own.

Another update; I added support stands with the same starfield texture for starships in 15mm and 25mm widths, with a short and tall version for each.

Squiermedad,
Mind if i just use a link to your stands and bases it will free up a large amount of space on the page for more models. These are great!
Nate
PS thanks for the link on your site as well.

Coolio. No need to double-post files. More models would be very cool too. Building these, and reading through the MDRG rules has me thinking of how the rules might be adapted to use these ships for a game of "Song of Void and Novae" (tm). It's all quite nebulous in my head at the moment, but it seems workable. Use grenade rules for explosions, having a point-defense special attribute creates a +2C against missile attacks outside of short range and only +1C inside short range. No knockdown or recoil, instead use "Shields Down" and "Reactor Flare" to emulate the game effects...something like that.

I was thinking along something of the same lines. In fact I have got some had written rules on a note pad i keep in front of the TV. I want to get them more smoothed out but the ships will consist of 6 classes each represented by a die (d4-d20). I am a huge d6 fan (don't need to buy and keep track of loads of die) but i found that giving each class a die would make balancing and classing easier. In essence 2 fighters attack on another both rolls a d4 and the higher wins. There will be abilities that can modify the number rolled putting one side or the other on a disadvantage. As far as class balancing a d4 fighter will not take on a d12 destroyer and hope to actually cause any damage Where as 10-20 d4 fighter might actually hit something vital. Like i said i need to smooth them out and finish with the abilities before i post something even close to resembling rules.

Nate Sounds a bit like Oversoul Games 'Flat Out War' rules, a very well thought out free set that's intended as a generic baseline for different eras. At one point they (Shaungamer88 & Oversoul) were tinkering with a starship combat detailed add-on for the system, but that was a while ago so I'm not sure where they are with it.

I just read through the flat out war rules and they are very similar. I have worked out a slightly different combat system that includes firring arcs and weapon half-lifes. Got a request though. The models i will be getting finished over the next few days will need some tweaked out bases. Any chance you can get something like this made with you starfield texture? My skill in gimp and photoshop is very limited and I would love to be able to remove the lines if possible. Thanks, Nate

What I do is set up the bases template on one layer, erase the areas that I want texxtures to show, and then put the texture on a layer beneath the bases template layer. I find it's easier to have a texture that's a full sheet in size or that repeats well enough to create a full-sized sheet. Anyways, I'm mostly packing everything up to leave with the family tuesday AM so I'm not sure if I have time. I'll try and create a sheet of double-hexes and get them sent off.

Yes the double base is what im looking for. some of my models from the next 4 classes are getting kinda long. no big hurry though and have fun on the trip!
