Any chance GrendelKitty is still with us and has silently and diligently been working on these ?
I'm a recovering BattleFleet Gothic Addict and I've been thinking about taking the edge off with Starmada or Warcosm, and I really like the look fo this fleet.
Hello, still here, sort of. I do want to do more on this project but the more I worked on it, the more my focus wandered to the left to another favored project of mine. I have not given up on Fleet 1 but it has been sidelined for the moment.
What I am working on is a space empire building game (and it would not be much of a stretch to mod a fantasy version). For now I am calling it 'Imperium et Libertas'. I just finished the first write up of a universal conflict system which will handle Military (space and ground), Espionage and Diplomatic conflicts.
The problem is, I suck at explaining things.. I love what I have come up with but it comes off a bit confusing. Every time I tried to explain it to some friends of mine, they scratched their heads. However, when I sat down and went though an example or two, they loved it.
Basically, the action that leads to the conflict determined what kind of conflict will be used, the units that can be used in it and the possible outcomes.
Each player involved will get a number of dice (d6) to roll based upon the units they have in the conflict..
Hold on, my story gets better..
Everyone rolls their dice and gets certain results, they get Successes, Damage, Defense, and Tactics results. (There is a chart showing what roll equals what). They then total up the results, adding in any bonuses (Tech, Card plays, Leaders, Racial Abilities, etc.) This is called the Initial Result.
But wait, there is more...
Now, each side takes turns using actions to modify the results till both sides pass consecutively . Mostly by spending tactics results but also from card plays, players can change Damage into Defense and vice versa at a diminishing return and even sacrifice to add Successes.
Each side then takes damage from the other side minus any defense results they got and compares their total successes. Whoever has the most, wins the conflict. What I think is cool though is that there are 3 degrees of winning, victory, major and complete. For example a player invades another player's system and starts a naval conflict. A victory result means they push the enemy navy out and next turn, they can drop troops to invade the planet. A major victory is like a normal victory but they do bonus damage as they chase the enemy fleet out. However, a complete victory lets them do the bonus damage and immediately start a ground invasion conflict and not let the other player get a chance to try and come back to lift the siege as it were.
Yes, its a lot.
However, I do not feel its over complicated. Think about it, one system for any conflict in the game. One roll to satisfy that love of dice in us all, but, you get a chance to trick out your results and change things. Also, one thing I am proud of is that there is no 'fail' roll, you won't roll the dice and 'miss/fail' you may not get what you want, but every result has its uses.
Doing a lot of damage does not necessarily mean victory, you might find yourself on the losing side but manage to kill off enough to prevent invasion before running off. Or maybe you win but it costs you everything you have at the moment..
So, universal conflict resolution.. Conflict in space, on the ground, in the halls of power and the back alleys with varying degrees of success.
Leaders of all kinds (relatively same numbers, but bonuses apply to their specific field. A diplomat will give bonus results in diplomacy conflicts, a general to ground and an admiral to navy, etc.)
Tech tree including some unique techs (when one player gets it, no one else can unless they somehow steal the plans or maybe capture it another way)
Racial Attributes to customize your empire. This also works into my theme of keeping things towards the abstract and letting who plays it make it their own in some ways.
And now, my fingers hurt.
I hope you can see why this might distract me from 'Fleet 1'
