Anyone know where I could find some small scale pirate and merchant vessels circa 1700-1850? I was thinking really small scale, like matchbox size.
We've got a Savage Worlds 50 Fathoms campaign going, and at some point soon there is going to be a big sea battle. We don't have enough space (or time) to do the battle in 30mm with Cog's and Maiden's! ;D

They aren't free, but the Pirates collectible miniatures game has some pretty cool plasti-card ships. If you are just using the minis (and not worried about getting the ships with the best stats) you can likely pick up some for dirt cheap...

Paper General has flats (but you have to browse through the pages): www.imagineimage.org/papergeneral.htmWhat about Pirates of the Spanish Main? Our local Targets are unloading them at Pick n Save prices.

What is Pirates of the Spanish Main? I know you could google this yourself but here's the BGG Link. I've always wanted to play but could never get into the collectible style games.

I did Google it, but I just didn't quite understand what it was at first.
I'll have to pick up a pack or two and check out the ship mini's.

I can't believe someone hasn't made a 2.5d cardstock version of these ships... not exact copies of course, just something along the same lines...

Yes, I saw some scan of the cards up on BGG. I wonder if I could just build from those? I might not since I didn't actually buy them.

I can't believe someone hasn't made a 2.5d cardstock version of these ships... not exact copies of course, just something along the same lines... I think it is because it is hard to do them with paper, when "hard" means that the paper lacks the rigidity of the "plastic" they used. So the whole boat will result in a really fragile (bending) thing. The only thing i got which are closer to that material are the pieces i built for Mech Attack: they was printed by a photo printing service: the photopaper is really sturdy, and i folded it using doubleside, thick adesive tape.

Actually I liked the game, but we always ended up fighting instead of racing for treasure. They actually inspired me to do a "constructable" 30mm ship based on plans by Gary Chalk that were first published in Wargames Illustrated. I just did it with cereal boxes so I only have a grey version. I have since considered scaling it back down because my favourite little plastic ones are getting really scratched up. Anyway for little paper ships try this: www.warartisan.com/ships

Wow, that's more like a model kit that uses downloadable pdfs. This is a list of the materials you will need: 1. 1/8” balsa sheet. 2. Cardstock. 90 to 110 pound works best. 3. Ordinary copier paper. 4. Heavy tagboard, about .5mm thickness. 4-ply Bristol board is perfect. 5. Round Toothpicks, or wooden dowel about 1/16” in diameter. 6. Bamboo skewers or wooden dowel, as close to 1/8" diameter as possible. 7. Wire. Florists wire works well, being soft enough to cut easily, but still stiff enough to hold its shape in short lengths. 18 or 20 gauge is about right for spars, but smaller gauges (22 or 24) will do, especially for standing rigging. Most craft stores will have a variety. 8. Glue. Any PVA based household white glue will work fine. Some of the parts will work better with cyanoacrylate, especially the "gel" type, but it's not strictly necessary. 9. Black cotton thread. For the rigging. 10. Paint. Hobby or craft paint, for coloring the wire parts. Tan and black are really all that's needed. I'm probably not going to be able to build something like this but I think it's cool they are pushing 'cardstock modeling' so far.

These are exceptionally cool though!
Might give it a try just for the WOW factor when I put them out of the game table.

Hmm, I need to update that page. I was digging around in some old files (printouts) and came across Shaungamer88's modular fleet files for the Human kingdom, Ork steamers, and Elven catamarans. I still have the pdf's for all of those, and I don't think Shaun would mind, so I'll see about getting some pics and files uploaded in the near future.

These are really cool, it's all I can do to keep from shelving my current project to make fleets of warships. ;D
I hate to ask for more but is there any pictures of the elf and orc ships assembled and are their sails that go with the elven ships?

I can post pics of the Orc ships I made, I never built any of the Elf ships though. No sails for the Elf ships, I believe that page was something of a rough draft.

Thanks to this thread I had to get a few ships from Pirates of the Spanish Main (specifically the Mysterious Island set). I actually like the game but I've only played a couple of times. The submarines are quite spiffy.

Sorry for this threadomancy but I printed off the Orc ships and can't seem to figure out where some of the pieces might go. Think you could post that pic?

Uhm, yeah. Tomorrow AM though. The Orc ship bits mainly just go together however you feel like it.
