This morning I woke up with an "NPC motivation" die in my head, and I thought it might be interesting to focus on dice that help with the creation of PCs and NPCs for almost any genre.
A Motivation Die might include stuff like: greed/wealth/power, affection/recognition/gratitude, spite/revenge/anger, discovery/self-growth/spirituality, pleasure/novelty/creativity... and one more.
An Appearance Die could describe the general look: disheveled/rebellious, mismatched/ridiculous, stylish/hip, business-like, utilitarian/workmanlike... gosh I have trouble coming up with that sixth one every time! (It'll come to me, though. Or it'll come to you and I'll steal it!)
Well, there's three to get started.
Armor/Weapons - probably tailored to different genres, so I can be a little more more specific.
Wealth - adapted from the Payout and Treasure dice.
Vocation/Line of Work - adapted from the Travelers die from the space adventure set.
Maybe a die for Complexion? Dark, dusky, olive, pale, ruddy, tan. Helpful if you're running an adventure set in an international airport...
Mannerisms? Fidgety... um... and others.
There might not be enough NPC-related dice to make up a decent-sized set. I should consider dice that help set up scenarios or encounters.
Enemy Party: loner, a pair, trio or quartet, small company, large company, veritable army.
Hostile Intent: rob/deceive/embezzle, murder/bloodlust/mayhem, kidnap/ransom/enslave, extort/terrorize/blackmail, slander/embarrass/defame... and the elusive number six.
Common Locations: market/shop, port/dock/storage, road/track/station, home/hotel/camp, temple/holy site...
PCs' involvement or the goal for a scenario: protect/rescue, fight/defeat, deliver/escort/guide, explore/plunder, investigate/neutralize....
Well that's about 10 or 11 dice to get things started. I'm sure we'll come up with some more. I have plenty of other stuff to work on in the meantime.
