I am wondering what the best places to get foam board are. To start, the cheapest I found was $20 for 10 20x30 pink sheats and Wal-Mart. www.walmart.com/ip/Elmer-s-Sturdy-Foam-Board-Sheets-Pink-10pk/16817666 . Shipping to a store is free but shipping to your home is only $1. Seemed like a pretty good deal if the color is not important to you, or maybe it is and you like pink . edit: Also wondering where in the U.S. is a cheep place to get magnetic and mag receptive sheets. My plan would be to cover the play area in mag receptive sheeting and attach magnetic basis to the terrain. So far it seems like covering a 4x4 ft area with mag receptive sheet (2 2x4 foot lengths) is about $55 and magnetic inkjet paper is about $32 for an equivalent amount in the form of 8.5x11 sheets (Also available in rolls which are even more expensive.)

First the magnet sheets: I bought a 24" x 10' (yes that's ten feet) roll of magnet sheeting from Magnet King two years ago and I still haven't even got close to unrolling the whole thing. And considering the price hasn't gone up since, I think it's still a good deal (it did cost me $15 to ship which may have increased in price since then). As for formcore: I got a 40-pack of 9"x12" black foamcore from Foamcore Heaven for $45. It now seems as though it's only $30 though (Shipping cost me just over $20). I also recently got a 25-pack of 24"x36" for a project I'm working on. They were quite pricy but I wanted black (everywhere else I saw was white only or even more expensive). FYI shipping for that large size was $30. On a somewhat related note, I also bought rare-earth (neodymium) magnets from K&J Magnetics which may also be useful in your own projects. Be sure to share pics of your project

Has anyone found a cheap source for steel paper? That's the limiting factor on my magnet obsession. I'm currently paying about £5 for three sheets of 'letter size' so thats about $3 a sheet.

At first I just thought I could use the magnet sheeting for the tray inserts as well as the bases but the polarity messes up the 'sticking power' and even if it is correctly aligned it shifts the minis to that specific location. Not good. I bought a few of the Litko Tray Inserts but I'm more of a DIY guy. A quick search did bring up custom-magnets.com but I haven't tried them yet. The price looks promising I just hope the shipping isn't crazy.

I use the steel paper 'upside down' so the black surface is face up rather than the coated surface. You get much better adhesion that way as it's magnet to steel with no paper in between.

You can get 20"x30" sheets of black foamboard on dollartree.com. The kicker is that you have to buy in packs of 50. So that's $50. The good news is that you can just have it sent to your local dollar tree store, so you don't have to pay shipping (at least I don't think you do).
Your local store might already have some in stock, so check first before ordering. One store close to me had it in white, but not black.

I got around to stopping by a dollar store the other day to look at their foamboard and it is just terrible stuff. I won't even go into it. edit: I ended up ordering from foamcoreheaven.com. Their prices seemed pretty comparable to amazon if you ordered enough and will cut the pieces precut to the size I want, which is nice. I ended up ordering 72 pieces cut into nominally 8"x8" squares for ~$50 including shipping. They are gonna be a little less than that cause the board they cut them from is exactly 4' x 8' or whatever so I would have to subtract off the blade thickness from the pieces. Still probably closer to 8x8 than what I can do at home.

I forgot about this thread...
I got that steel vinyl roll and have been making tray inserts with it. I have enough steel vinyl to retire (I won't run out). I've now got the ultimate trifecta: photo matte paper, steel tray inserts, & magnet bases. It's really slick. I'm gonna have to convert all my stuff now.
