...and Steam based Victorian fantasy mechanical toys are fun to make too. All these models are in working build formats, and lots of their texturing is done. The next one to roll out of the shop will be the Schturm Tower, a war machine created by Professor Schturm on behalf of his Prussian sponsors. The second page with tracks, wheels and cannon are done. The first page still has a ways to go so I'm think late next week for a release date, probably have a file available for a test-builder by this friday. As far as test-builders go, I'll entertain requests from people who actually build things. Having a picture of a test-build would be great, but critical commentary on whether the build works from another person's perspective is more valuable.

Do crappy phone pics count? As long as you actually build the model. ;D

Thanks Reivaj. And still farther down the road; I'm pretty excited to find these files again and I believe I finally have the skills to to give them decent texture jobs and finish them.

WOW! I will build it! I will build them all! (Maybe not so much the train... but everything else). I HAVE test built stuff in the past. Need references? Dave Okum, AoM, Sammo, Tommygun... I can't think of anyone else, off-hand. I did try to do some tests for Dave Graffam, but my computer at that time was out-dated. (This problem has been fixed).

Thanks, it's a couple of days behind the schedule I'd set for myself but still going well. I finally remembered the name of this line of models, "Cog Cruisers" (tm). Someone at the old Paperworlds site helped me with that so I'll have to dig in the archives to find out who it was so they can get a free model. I remember all of my debts.

Really great work here - you can feel the steampunk atmosphere just looking at this!!! I like very much yours shading/texturing and 3D effects! Still looking at wheels I got the impression that "neels" on wheels on left sheet got definitely bigger shadows compared to right sheet? I'd prefer smaller (right) ones:) Plus I'd vote for the right-side colour scheme - not so bright, but more steel/metallic grey covered by dust - in overall somehow more "realistic". Anyway, that's just my two cents - not knowing the whole concept and judging on minimal preview pics - plus I got close to none experience with 30mm 3D modern vehicles designing (and as crucial factor tabletop-distance feeling should be considered thus more bold looking/bright colours might be in fact far better choice) but... I'm really, really excited to see where this leads so that's why I dare to ask.

I'm always concerned about texturing getting too dark, so I usually "pop" the levels up to just above where I think they look right, that way when printed and built they look correct on the tabletop...most of the time. I know it looks odd. The two color schemes for the wheels will both be in the set, the one on the left has a really light rust layer set to saturation. The upper body has three variations in it's trim colors. I'm still chugging along on rivets....

Speaking of rivets; the rivetted rusty underside that no one will ever see.

Oh... right... RIVETS! Shame on me and sorry for "neels" err...needles!... (( ;D Regarding last picture now - it's SUPERB, really! Metal looks dirty and brushed/shadowy/little rusty and with natural looking kinda oil spots around the rivets... BTW replacing rivets plain shadows with dark surroundings works simply perfect for me! And well... of course possibility that "no one will ever see" exists and always threads but even if so... that's their(!) pity/problem:). Most important is that all details/textures/shadows etc... even if not visible at first sight, combined together CONTRIBUTE to overall project feeling and ambience!! So they ARE worthy your effort! Not my words but I could sign beneath - big "chunk" of fun derived from being designer/artist/other creative hobby or profession here... is that you are constantly improving yourself and delivering the best you can at the moment... even if just for a small percentage of your users/audition. And... in addition in the long-run it usually profits! Anyway - waitin' for your's Victorian machines!

And... in addition in the long-run it usually profits! Anyway - waitin' for your's Victorian machines! Oh absolutely! Thanks, I started a bunch of my current projects six years ago...and I could make decent 3D models then but the texturing process just baffled me. It would take me days of fiddling to do something like that underside bit and then I'd get discouraged and let it fade away into the background of my hard-drive...Today I looked at that underside and said, "Hm, it'd be kind of cheap of me to not put something there, even though it'll vanish once the models done." So I knocked that out in just a few minutes, and that made me pretty happy to be able to do that. Top hatch and vision slits done;

I wouldn't even know where to start on texturing things these days. Back 12 to 15 years ago I was making all kinds of items for people to drop into their The Sims games, but now I struggle.
You are doing very well with this if you can knock that out in just a few minutes.

Time for a test-builder! As I said before I'm not looking for someone to just "look" at the pdf's and critique the textures, I'm looking for someone who will actually build the model and give feedback on it's workability. Pics of the build are not necessary but are appreciated. The instructions are not complete yet but you will receive the raw build pics that I am using for the instructions. I'm hoping to be wrapped up and done with this by Monday with a probable Tuesday release. Schturm towers old and new;

As much as I would like to, I don't think my weekend plans will give me a chance to get it done by Monday. Rebuilding steps, getting my exhaust system fixed on my car, trying to find a heating/cooling guy to work on my old gravity-feed furnace. Would Wednesday night work?

Hmm, I was pretty excited to be at the finish line earlier, but another day or two would actually give me time to finish revamping my website to be a promotional tool as well as a depository for my free projects.

Too funny. I was doing a search last week and ended up with page after page of non-applicable (to my search anyway) material.
Good luck with this line.

Well, I offered once, and will offer one last time... If you send it to me, I will build it, take pictures and give feedback...
If you choose someone else as a test-builder, I understand.
Going once... Going twice...

Going once... Going twice... Ah, you didn't respond last week when I said it was ready, but I'd forgotten you're previous offer... I've already gotten some constructive feedback on this model but a little more won't hurt. Just give me a couple of minutes to set up the test-build link.

Well, I did it again... I promised I would have pictures on here by today (because I generally have Mondays off), but I was scheduled to work today. So, to keep with my promise (I am MANY things, but I NEVER go back on my word) I got up at 5:00 to work on this. I am nearly done, and may have to finish it when I get home... but regardless, there WILL be my built pics on here today!

I just got home, so here are the pictures... I have to say, first off, Squirmydad, this is some of your FINEST work. (I say "some of," because your stuff is so good, it would be like saying that a certain jelly bean is better than another... you can have a big bag, and the are ALL wonderful). There were no instructions with this test build, but you don't need them. It is a great design that flows together nicely... it is very cut and dry (with a little folding and glueing in the middle). Seriously, if you have ever built and Ebbles or TOPO model, you are familiar with the basic shapes.

I couldn't help but think of a Daelec (or however it's spelled) as I was assembling the fuselage and the turret. I have to say that simply by looking at the pictures that Squirmydad had posted here, was all the reference I needed.
