Hey there, i´ve been lurking around on this board for a while now. I´m a great fan of One Monk´s, Okumart´s and Darkmook´s work. I use their models for survival horror gaming with Ganesha Games Fear and Faith rules. But I was missing some unarmed civilian models. And so i started to draw my own. Because I have no clue how to use vector graphics, I made them with Art Rage 3 and Bamboo Fun. This is my first set. www.4shared.com/get/STaBzyNI/TheHendersons.htmlflic.kr/p/dk9zb2It is a familiy consisting of Mum, Dad (who´s a preacher), their children Tom and Marissa (a Gothgirl btw), Granpa and Tom´s obscenely large Guinea Pig "Schweindi" (german for Piggy). Please tell me, what you think about this "first draft".

Hello and welcome to the forum. Your paper miniatures are nice, they remind me of old computer games and comics with their bright colours. I wonder if the black outline on everyone but the mom isn't too thin? I have no Robocutter Coincidentally, I was also in need of unarmed civilians for my future Noir project. I made them by cropping photos of actual miniatures and pasting them into my standee template... I am no artist so I can't just make my own like you did By the way, it might be easier for others to view your creations if you just upload them as an image and put it into your pist with IMG tags, it beats having to wait 20 secs for a pdf download

I'd say they came out pretty well except Schweindi is way too dark. I wouldn't know he was a guinea pig, if you hadn't told me ...
Can you lighten him up a bit?

These are well beyond "first draft." Lots of character here!

Thanks for the feedback. cherno - i will add thicker outlines, when i work the set over - i thought they were thick enough. i even wanted too reduce them on Mum. i also have no robocutter and the minis came out just right for me, but i cut very close to the edges of my models. but next time - thicker outlines. btw - i admire your work with paper, that you posted on leadadventure. especially your strange aeons stuff. Vermin King- i don´t know how to light Schweindi up, but maybe i will draw a second version. this model was a tribute to one of my girlfriends guinea pigs that got sick and i had to put it on it´s last journey. @cowboyland - thanks for the comment. i´ve been painting metal and plastic minis and playing wargames for more than twenty years now, but storage and transporting issues did let me switch to paper. Coming up next - my next minis will be some characters for Kooky Teenage Monster Hunsters (the first expansion for Fear and Faith). Preview: flic.kr/p/dkc7xH

I liked the style of the minis, they remember me of Herge's Tintin comics. For criticism: The image was very compressed by the JPEG algorithm, save with more quality next time. Yor work really deserve it! They are, indeed, dark. I think you can fix that simply by arranging the levels of the image in GIMP or Photoshop. For me they seemed to be compressed in the vertical axis. Mostly is the teenage daughter and the father that got me this impression. A 120% scale on the vertical axis should fix that. The head of the mom seems too little for the body. For some reason, the background isn't white, but a very light cream tone (#FCFDF5 if you want to know). As for the outlines, Mom has too thick ones, the children are on the thin side, I think the father has them just right. I adjusted these issues for my printing, and I'm posting this file here so that you can see what I'm talking about. Modern civilians are a little hard to come by, I think they'll be very useful, thanks! Attachments:

Schweindi is fantastic. I don't know if it is my computer settings, but I really couldn't see how great he was.
I would definitely like to see more of these.

hackbarth - thanks for the workover. i need never did any graphic work before on the computer. so i´m just starting to learn. the tintin-style is intentional, as i grew up with french comics (asterix, lucky luke, clever and smart, marsupilami and tintin). i have not been drawing for about 20 years, so i hope to get better. Vermin King - these first models were starters, which i finished fast to get some feedback about my skills and style. "Matt" - the mini from the preview in my last post is allready finished. Currently i´m working on a fanart mini for resident evil 4 (the game, not the movie), which i hope to finish within the next two or three days.

flic.kr/p/dmy1S8Did a little training with Photoshop and found a new (and faster) way to colorize. Sorry that it´s just the link, but i´m too dumb to include an image.

You aren't dumb. It's just not something you've done before. Go to your link. Right click on the image. That will open a box that gives you options on resolution. I clicked on Medium 500. When that opens, right click again and go to properties. Copy the Address(URL) info. come back to your post. Above the smilies, there are buttons. On my computer, the fourth from the left on the bottom row is the image button (looks like a picture of dirt, some trees and sky). Click on that button and between the two bracketed abbreviations, click to move your cursor there. Paste your URL from the image there, and your image will be in your post. Try it a couple times and then it will be second nature. Although there is probably an easier way, that's how I do it.

Great skills here, zapasnik. So, 20 years of drawing pause seem to have no impact ... !? Lines are great, poses and expression are even greater. Very comical too. No offense to Schweindi, but maybe there is a way to use it as a Talking Giant Rat? (= 'At your command, Masterrrr ...!'). I know, that coloring could eat up lots of time, so I am searching for 'shortcuts' all the time ... but sometimes the 'tools' can effect the quality of your work - like the 'metallic shine' of the Photoshop Color Gradient Fill Stuff. I like the 'handwork' coloring of yours better (it's more 'natural') - but it's up to you do decide, if 'handwork' is worth the time at this 30mm scale. Only the print comparison could tell.

Thanks for the compliment. But i actually like the more "glossy" look of the new colorizing. This way they come out more the way i did my metall and plastic miniatures - with a heavy coat of varnish. And i still have to "handwork" the highlights.
Use Schweindi any way you want. Feel free to add a rat´s tail. He wont care...

flic.kr/p/dpcwH1Because he will not fit in the new colorizing style i use for my minis. Here is Matt. Obviously he feels at home in the local pool hall. flic.kr/p/dpcNgUAnd Istvan, a mini i did as a kind of self portrait.

I think that you are founding your style now. Your figures are beginning to show consistency of quality. Matt is a very good figure. I just stretched him 110% and he was perfect, Istvan end the new girl are perfect as they are, no adjustments necessary.
I did find the bases from Matt and the new girl a little bit thicker that I would do. and Matt has a really very thick outline. Of course once the minis are mounted that isn't a issue anymore, so this isn't really criticism. In fact now it's very hard for me to say anything you could do to improve these minis, I think you should consider this a compliment.

Thanks lads for the feedback. I know i was a little enthusiastic with the outlines on Matt And you are right about the basing slots. As you can see in Istvan, i´m going towards smaller ones. Btw - as Istvan was made to represent myself, the girl was made to represent my girlfriend.
