I had a mid sized project in mind that I've been wanting to have done for quite a while now but I'm not sure where to start or who to ask. I'm a huge train fan (U.S. Diesel trains) and have been wanting to have some small scale train models designed in black and white (so I can add my own color and logos), I just can't get the hang of using 3D modeling software. I thought about seeing what it would cost as a commission, to see if a project like this is worth thinking about at the moment.
I used to have a model train hobby, but sadly like most model hobbies it seems in the past few years the cost just seems to be doubling. Paper models are a perfect alternative and a lot can be done with it, lol.
I mostly just wanted to toss this out there and see what feedback I got. If anyone has some ideas fell free to post. ;D

Ironically, I had a dream last night that I designed a train for 28mm figures. Then, in the dream, I used the software that CBL introduced me to (PDF Mate) and I made it 15mm. I then used PMI's Shuffler to print out a whole lay-out complete with a town in the center of it. I was kind of excited this morning when I woke up, because it was a whole train layout / gaming table... complete with Dave Graffam's town (and some Finger and Toe stuff thrown in to round it out). There were Grendel_Mother's vehicles EVERYWHERE! It was pretty exciting... However, I woke up and realized, I have way too many projects going to try to do something else at the moment. I would LOVE to try something like this for you, because you are one of my oldest firends. Let me know what you had in mind... an modern engine and some train cars? TOPO and Paper Make It both offer shipping containers... Perhaps I could make a flatcar that would sit under the containers to be your train cars. I could try to do something in like the kiladecus Motorworks stuff, and make an engine. Let me know what you are thinking, and I will *try* to squeeze something out between project breaks... Let me know... David

"Hackbarth Proccess"!? I like it!
I think I need to put more tutorials on the forum, like I did with kiladecus vehicle recolor...

Those links have some really neat trains tho unfortunately most are over seas style trains. For modern U.S. there seems to only be a couple locos and few rollong stock that are various scales. It doesn't seem like there is much options yet for modern U.S. trains.

Since you're putting up the textures, the 3d part is not that hard for me, I'll give it a go. I'll make one diesel train, please go to one of these blueprint sites and pick one, then tell me what scale, and I'll see if I can get it designed up. blueprintbox.com/cat476.htmwww.the-blueprints.com/blueprints/trains/Or, if you can find side, front and rear view photos that I could use as reference, I could try and work off of those.

Lol, it will be hard to pick one, but I'll look through the sites when I get on my laptop tonight and see if I can find one that shows all the views. I know a couple of my favorite locos are the EMD SD70ACe and the GE ES44AC. I've been slowly trying to learn sketchup, but for some reason 3D modeling is a learning curve for me. I caught on to PhotoShop quick tho.

Funny, I'm just the opposite. 3D work feels easy and quick, Photoshop feels like I still don't know a million things. Thanks for the links, I'll see what I can do. **BTW; what scale are you looking at? HO?

Lol, I'm slowly wrapping my mind around 3D, but I figure its gonna take me quite a while to get the hang of it, and I'd probably make trains look horrible, lol. For PhotoShop I ended up taking microcomputer classes at our local college, as they have 3 PhotoShop classes. I'm getting ready to take the second one next term, lol. I seem to learn better in a class than on my own, not sure why lol. Yea, I was thinking roughly HO scale (1:87, if I'm correct). Also I ended up sending a pm with a few random thoughts and ideas lol.
