And ink saving white tabs. How do people feel about that. I think I like it.

Unfortunately no dwarves. C'mon... forget the Dwarves in this case, please? These historical based minis are so unique - simply amazing!!!

Don't worry mesper. I was only kidding.
I intend to stick to the jousting/court/knightly culture theme making these miniatures. I will probably make some imp sized miniatures but only as pages or servants according to codex manesse canon and content (like on e.g. Henryk Wroclawski, Waclaw czeski, or Otto von Brandenburg charts).
Occasional giants or wizards are just a little distraction.

Here comes the 5th team of jousting knights. Full image here.It is by far most colourful bunch I made up to date. Most likely it is also the last set of mounted, jousting knights, but surely not the last minis from Codex Manesse. I like making them just too much.

I wondered if they deserve a separate thread, but they are still jousting related (at least two of them) so I post them here. Meet the Codex Manesse Fencers. Full res image here.In addition to six Manesse fencers the last two characters are guest stars from I33 Fechtbuch - one of the oldest (if not "the oldest") surviving armed combat manual in the world.

Not sure how on earth I've managed to miss this thread till now. These are stunning figures Madarchitect, and from an "impeccable" historical source too! And Taltali's griffons no less as well!
Medieval tournaments included fighting on foot at times (see Malory), not just for unhorsed knights, so any and all further minis like this would be very welcome, as well as (more) civilian onlookers.
As to the style, many of Dryw the Harper's minis have a very medieval-manuscript look to them too; one or two could have almost stepped off the page of a psalter. And that's aside from the historically-based minis from Mesper!

These are really nice! The use of historical images is just brilliant! I'm so jealous that I didn't think of it first! It brings to mind so many possibilities= Hieronymus Bosch, and Egyptian hieroglyphics, and Mayan or Aztec imagery to name a few.

I have a facsimile version of I 33. I never thought of making mini's from it! This makes me think of all the Lichtenauer fechtbucher that can be mined.

Fully agreed - many superb sources available and really BRILLIANT idea - so KUDOS madarchitect! You can also add to the list: - ancient Greeks (for exampe hoplites based on vase/pottery paintings) - Romans (vide Trajan's Column relief) Following, just to proof the idea, a few illustrations from Kartonowa Armia books - most of these "ancient" figurines from pictures could be easily converted into fully 2-sided minis (in fact Anubis already is a 2-sided 60mm scale figurine): I have a facsimile version of I 33. I never thought of making mini's from it! This makes me think of all the Lichtenauer fechtbucher that can be mined. =>>> But... IMHO Cowboy's idea: fencing figurines (a lot of various quality reference sources available!) is absolutely SUPERB!!!

Medieval tournaments included fighting on foot at times (see Malory)... I know, I know. Its just that first four fighters ar rather fighting a judical duel, and the last two are, hmm... practicing or teaching. That leaves two for the tournament. ... so any and all further minis like this would be very welcome, as well as (more) civilian onlookers. They are all coming. It brings to mind so many possibilities= Hieronymus Bosch, and Egyptian hieroglyphics, and Mayan or Aztec imagery to name a few. This makes me think of all the Lichtenauer fechtbucher that can be mined. You can also add to the list: - ancient Greeks (for exampe hoplites based on vase/pottery paintings) - Romans (vide Trajan's Column relief) All true. You can add traditional japaneese art samurai depictions, book of Kells etc irish manuscripts, assyrian reliefs, byzantine and russian icons, moghul and colonial period indian miniatures (Kama Sutra miniatures anyone?) I think with some effort you could use even some cave paintings. Possibilities are endless. I will stick to XIII-XIV century however, until the sources are depleted. I want to create a consistent line of miniatures in terms of style and period to make it useful for gaming, not only as collectors or showcase pieces. I think i have used about 20% of what can be pulled out of Codex Manesse itself, and there are other period sources so... Stay tuned.

Those look machine cut - if so, would you share the cutfiles? Yup - they'll be shared. I'm tweaking the original images a little, and passing both the images and the cutfiles on to madarchitect.

I stepped away for a while to get some other things done, but I'm back now! I've got cutfiles done for the five pages of knights. I think that leaves four more pages to go.

Finished up the cutfiles for the pages in this thread, and sent them off to madarchitect. Hoping to hear back soon so we can drop a link here for anyone else to get em built.

Uh. Sorry folks it took me so long. Sometimes it is the smallest things that are most difficult to find time for. Anyway, here are the complete Jousting Knights with the cutfiles. Great thanks for putting all this together mproteau. These are also available (together with "The court") through my blog here
