I'm building a model and it has a Tower. As you know, I like to add interiors to my builds - and I also like staircases.
This time I have a new idea - attach each tread to the wall of a flat sheet of paper that I can insert into the tower (and remove) to make it easy to put things/figures on the stairs and such...
I'm into easy building, so each tread is a box...
Roll it up, and BOOM!
Looking through the 2nd floor exit...
Something coming up the stairs?
It ran passed...
OH! That's why it was in such a hurry!
I can't wait to build this in full color. For the first time I'm considering transparent windows to let light into the tower well...

Looks great Oldschooldm. Steps of such stairs usually overlapped in the middle forming a sort of a central column. Just a side note as making it in the model would make it difficult to use and of course ignore the "fantasy factor". The limitations of miniature bases and miniatures not being in proper proportions can often make it difficult to make such elements. Stairs are never steep enough (if they are to look like stairs and not a pile of boxes), doors are always to wide (if a mini is to pass through) not to mention size and slope of simple hills. But despite such difficulties your stairs look (and seem to work) really well.

Here's the stairs buildup:
After a test-fitting, I decided not build the planned remaining stairs to the tower roof - they would have hidden all the figures on the staircase when viewed from above.
Add some figures before inserting into the tower (only the lower guy stays in that position for all the photos afterward:
The lower entrance:
Finally, a 2 second video of a tealight dropped into the stairwell to simulate torchlight...
I'm very happy with how it turned out - not perfect, but it was a fun challenge and it was great to finally build a staircase that wasn't a compromise from my vision.
Watch for this tower to appear in my interior-kitbashed Merchant's Guild building in the coming weeks...

So - it was time to build the roof. I wanted it to be removable (for access to the staircase for play and to remove it to make figure changes...) I also realized that I wanted more light in the stairwell even when the roof was on... So I made the roof of vellum and used the same paperboard ring support as the lip of the tower...
Here's how it looks in place:
Now let's check out the effect on internal lighting - this is with the roof IN place:
Smashing success! I like the softer light...
So let me get my iPhone camera in there, looking up at the tower glass roof:
I'm loving this vellum, yes, I am!
Here's the roof off for a good look at the pattern...
I just used photoshop to change the color (from yellow) from a photo of a stained glass domed roof somewhere that I found on the interwebs...
Pretty sweet, right?

Oh that's so beautiful This tower is one of those models where you wish you could change yourself to mini size so it's possible to explore it properly.
Just roll the darn dice. Pixel pusher and proud of it.

I must admit that travel to Europe and looking at all that wonderful ancient stained glass was an inspiration. And I probably am spending an inordinate amount of time imagining just that, even though I can't currently get the camera shots I want....

Step one: Build this tower and all the other amazing buildings that I've been drooling after.
Step two: Set up everything into the perfect village scene with requisite dungeons and caverns and forests and such nearby.
Step three: Download plans for miniaturization ray and build the sucker.
Step four: Have everything ready to go when players arrive.
Step five: Miniaturize the monster mini's and put in place, then miniaturize the food and put in local tavern, then, putting miniaturization ray on a timer, miniaturize the players and myself and have a proper adventure!
Note to self: Next time, lock the damn cats outside!
BTW: Who wouldn't do this if they could? Hmmmm?
I am the Lady, thy Dungeon Mistress! All will love and fear me! Muahahahahah!
Vermin King: We want it to feel like a sanctuary. At least that is what I try to do, sometimes failing miserably

wyvern: cowboycentaur: The Fat Dragon Volcano set was a stretch goal from the Wilderness Adventures KS back in 2015, so that should still be available in your DriveThru RPG Library. You should be able to find it there under "Fat Dragon Games".

cowboycentaur: Anyone recall a Fat Dragon Volcano set? I have one that seems to have lost a bunch of files in the last decade or so, and moves across several computers. Now i can't find the set anywhere online.

alloydog: You can copy/paste the images into the forum and this shout box - 😁 but there isn't the Thumb Up... 🤔

alloydog: OK, update! Goto the Wikipedia page for the List of emoticons link:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_emoticons

alloydog: You can even copy/paste it to Notepad (or any other text editor, I guess - I use Gedit)
Mar 8, 2024 21:47:44 GMT -9
alloydog: From the post I linked to below, if you select it, then right-click on it, you will even get an option to search for the Thumb Up character, so I think it is part of the standard ASCII character set: https://i.p

alloydog: Actually, I can't remember where it came from, might be from Proboards emoticon own library. It is literally a character that can be copy/pasted. If you go to my post cardboard-warriors.proboards.com/post/100330/ you can copy the thumbs up there.
