YES! I just need to get it moving. here's the rough guidelines and timelines; I'll create the forum threads for the categories soon, finalizing guidelines now. Papercuts 2014 will be going on in the month of August, entries due by the last day of August 2014. The categories are for single miniatures, group miniatures (2+), models, and dioramas. One entry per person per category. With the exception of dioramas, all entries must be original works, must have a photo of the finished model/miniature, and be accompanied by a free download of the model/miniature. Just a photo of your finished miniature or model will not be enough this year. A free download will allow the voting public to better appreciate the work being presented. Dioramas can be a presentation of any paper model/miniature from anywhere, maximum of three photos to present the dioramas, please provide credit for the origins of the models and miniatures used in your photos. Prizes for the categories are TBA at the moment but will be comparable to last year's prize rewards. Judging and voting will be done by the masses, no celebrity judges. After the Papercuts competition closes the entries will all be compiled into a nice fat download from a pretty webpage at onemonk.com, much like the Forum Hoards. This make sense? Sound good? I leave something out? Thanks for the nudge.

I like the download/hoard angle. I expect to be away from my computer most of the summer, but I might drop in long enough to vote.
Have fun, everyone.

Thanks for bringing those up - we really want to get everything squared away before the entries start coming in. I'll chime in more when on my laptop...

It occurred to me when I read over oldschooldm's links that maybe 2.5d entries (if there are any) might more reasonably compete with 2d figs than 3d models. After all, it is just another flat surface that can be viewed from a different angle. I was thinking it is so common to add 2.5 wings to a figure but that really doesn't make it comparable to a 3d build. I don't have an idea in mind right now, but I am actually going to go back through my projects and see if there is anything original enough for me to spruce up and submit

Before this contest is announced, I'd like to share a post I just read: Another's Accolades Aren't Your CompetitionTLDR? Here's the conclusion: I know the feelings discussed here are common in competition, and like the author, I'm no exception. This post is a great place to go to remind ourselves that all contributions build up our hobby and that taste is personal and fleeting.

by the way, is it ok for me to submit the desert skiff to the papercut awards, although I have produced it for the July forum hoard?

Sure! I really need to get those rules and announcements posted. I, for one, have been grateful for the delay - I missed entering last year and want to try to make it this year. It's a great time for all of us to share our accomplishments! :-)

One of the things that just occurred to me is that participants should be able to submit entries for both the Forum Hoard and the Paper cuts competition so they are able to participate in both without burning themselves out.
The previously titled category of Diorama will be changed to Papercraft In Action (!) And will actually be composed of two categories; pure paper and mixed media. mixed media can be pics of builds and minis composed of any material as long as paper craft features somewhere in the photos- limit one entry per person, max of three photos per entry. Pure Paper category consists of build pics of models, miniatures, tiles, etc. as long as everything in the pic is paper. Max of one entry per person, max of three pics per entry.
Yes, you can enter both categories.

squirmydad - Just a thought, but the Mixed Media option may need to be a little more defined. One tiny paper leaf on the central ground of an otherwise all-metal-and-resin scene would seem to be permissable presently, albeit far from the spirit of the thing. Perhaps suggest the central feature(s) of the diorama need to be papercrafted?

The judging criteria for every category should cover the purpose and spirit of the competition. :-) Though the entry you mention could be submitted, it wouldn't win!

It exactly matches the competition criteria, and by definition those must be the judging criteria too, otherwise how can the judges judge? This is exactly why I suggested clarification was needed. After all, as it's not specified, exactly how little papercraft is too little to win?

wyvern, I think oldschooldm is just pointing out that the judges would be able to make that exact judgement. If I make an awesome lego build and put a lame bit of paper in it, its not likely to win. If I put together an awesome lego build and in it is a really great bit of paper, and the focus of my scene is around the paper thing, I might win. But, the judges will decide what they feel is best. It's not just "you must have at least 20cm squared cardstock 98% saturated with ink and at least seven folds in order to win." I haven't followed the awards from previous years to closely. Are all the submissions gathered together on a single page/thread to easily read through? Do they all get annotated with comments from judges so people know why they were or were not winners?

Do they all get annotated with comments from judges so people know why they were or were not winners? As I recall, each category gets its own thread. "We" did away with "celebrity judges" and moved to member votes, which tends to limit annotation. But I think we should encourage more of them.

Paper craft must feature prominently. The "Celebrity Judge" system was laid to rest.

LOL I love Capri's, very professionals . Hardtop would be safer but not so good for showing of characters and the L1A1 SLR, not enough SLR's in gaming today.

I don't think I have agreed with so many sentiments in one sentence since I joined this forum!!hehe! (SLRs will always remind me of my Action Man it has to be said. The standard longarm of men with gripping hands and eagle eyes!!!)

(SLRs will always remind me of my Action Man it has to be said. The standard longarm of men with gripping hands and eagle eyes!!!) I never had an Action Man, I had Tommy Gunn instead. Wish I still had him. Only made between 1966 and 1968 (pardon me, my age is showing )and now quite rare.

I had an old school GI Joe (before he was shrunk.) Even had a Mountie uniform for him. And yes, an SLR!

I have some Action Man figures most have M1 helmets and are dressed in camouflage uniforns, but I have one who is wearing jeans with the knees out and a sleeveless jacket; - he's armed with a combat shotgun. I dressed up a plastic model doll from the toyshop in a spare uniform so she can hang out with the boys. Someone told me once about playing skirmish rules wargames with Action Man figures, but I've never tried it myself.
