thanks Dwarves are really hard for me for a lot of reasons but mostly it's the proportions that mess me up. when you draw a lot you get into certain habits and patterns. Drawing people and characters is relatively easy for me and I don't often need models to go by anymore but dwarvs are so different. first they are typically a big ball of hair with eyes a big nose, arms and feet ... something like this ...
if you were to take most dwarf drawing and shave them completely they would be SUPER freaks of nature. meaning that they wouldn't be able to do the things that dwarvs seem to be able to do all the time. like jumping with any serious hight or running fast or fighting efficiently in close combat... so shaved he would look something like this...
ok so at first it just looks like a really buff construction worker... but if you look closely you will see that shoulders are impossibly high and the color bones would be HUGE to support them also the upper body is almost twice what the lower body can support mostly because the obliques are completely nonexistent. their are a number of anatomical flaws with fantasy dwarves that make them difficult to draw so typically you see the flaws covered by very ornate clothing with fine detail to draw your eyes away from the obvious flaws. It's really hard to find good anatomical references for dwarves. I tried using people who have dwarfism but they always come out looking like small people not dwarves LOL
though recently and pleasingly I have been able to find several decent reference pics of dwarves that look almost possible oddly enough some of them come from world of warcraft. they put a lot of time into the dwarf character development.
All in all with the impossible body type and the Super ornate clothing Dwarves are slow going at best.
