The theme for this months HOARD is STAR TREK This can be any sort of miniature on the above theme or feel free to submit miniatures off theme. If you submit a figure, they must include both front and rear art, have a proper trimming outline, and include instructions for multi-part models. Recolors and figure mods are encouraged, and even uncolored designs are welcome. No nudity or sexuality, but bloody gory and horrifying is encouraged. If you have questions about how to design your figures, like formats, resolution, and stuff like that, see the HOARD GUIDELINES in this forum category. Entries for the Hoard will be accepted until the last day of March, 2015.

In memory of Leonard Nimoy I'm changing this Hoard to all things Trek; old, new, and could have been. The Supervillains theme will reappear when you least expect it.

Wonderful. It can't be used on the Hoard, but I'm working on Vladimir Micas' Spock, sampling various photos of Nimoy to try to get him to look like the Spock we all know and love. I'm going to be out tonight, so I probably won't get back to work on it until tomorrow night. Here's an image of the original model Wish me luck. Actually, just replacing the eyes with the photo eyes made a tremendous improvement

Here's a render of the shuttle Galileo. It's roughly 6" long. To get it to fit one page and still be 28mm, I had to eliminate the bottom and make the nacelles flats. Texture should be easy, and I'll do it as I work on my commercial stuff.

Here's the final CGI render of the Enterprise shuttle NCC-1701/8 Nimoy. I have to unfold and set up the page then submit.

Here is the shuttlecraft Nimoy. The challenege was fitting everything one one page, including directions. Feel free to add the OneMonk logo somewhere.

Very nice guys! Glenn, what software do you use for the rendering and unfolding? I am wanting to start some 3d stuff and am looking for some software.

I design with Amabilis' 3D Crafter Pro. It's quite a bit easier to learn than Hexagon or Carrara and a whole lot cheaper than #D Studio Max. UV maps are created in Ultimate Unwrap and unfold with Ultimate Papercraft, both by Brad Bolthouse. Rendering depends. A quick render, I use the render engine in my modeling software. For "reference views" (think engineering 3 views) I use 3D Photobrowser from Mootools because it does the views I want automatically. Really good renders with other props, etc, I used the free DAZ 3D (did I mention free?). All the renders have to be hand massaged in Photoshop for cropping, brightness and contrast (and sometimes adding backgrounds).
Cost can be an issue. While there is a free version of 3d Crafter, I use the pro for $70. Ultimate Unwrap is $60, and Ultimate Papercraft is $40.00. DAZ3d is free, but 3d Photo Browser is $30. So, for $200.00 you're in. That's less than the cost of many miniatures games plus expansions. There are freeware versions of just about everything. I started with Metasequoia as a modeler and Pepakura as my unfolding software, but just didn't like them. Others (Christopher Rowe, for example, aka Mel Ebbles) swears by them.

Metasequoia is Marcos' (Toposolitario), too. I've heard that there are some issues with Win 8, but I don't know that from experience Oh, yeah, my printer is out, but here is where I'm at on the Spock figure. I need to work on the ears, but printed out at two pages per page, I think this will be a much better likeness than the original model. I'm not a good designer, but at this point, I have a couple failed attempts that I had previously thought were within my range. Was working on that dog with the horn sticking out of his forehead and the spiny back and also was working on a wall of Tribbles (or floor tile, I guess). I'll play with them again later today

I should give some inspirational credit to Dave Okum. Had he not done the classic Star Trek figures, I probably wouldn't have hit on the shuttlecraft.

Well, maybe this can be some groundwork for someone to do a floor tile or wall. I started with this image I cobbled together a tribble texture in the attachment.

Hey Vermin King, do you remember those short pyramids of loot and dirt someone made for terrain? Wouldn't it be cool to have a pile of tribles? Just suggesting since you might find the pyramids faster than I will.

Some Amok Time action. I am sure someone out there has done something similar but here ya go. I will try to finish up the fine detail coloring and shade them soon (and maybe get to those piles tribbles afterword ).

As I was looking up images, I'd forgotten about some episodes. That was one of them. Salt Vampire was a good one. The various alternate earth episodes, like the one with gangsters, or the one with Nazis, or the one where they were in their togas. I don't remember this one, though That made me laugh

zygrott24, I like your idea for figures. I made a start on the tribble pile, It was Adam Souza that did the original junk piles.

Here is the wip of the tribble piles. Geometry by Adam Souza, tribble texture by Vermin King. I did three different sizes. Would you guys prefer them with the fold lines or should I take them off?

I would leave them on, but make them a lighter gray.

I have a little contribution for all. The link below will take you to a PDF model of the old soundstage corridor for the Original Star Trek series. it is in 1/4" scale and has no instructions. I'm quite sure you all are fantastic at figuring out how to put it together. Have fun. I would love to see what you guys make of it. www.dropbox.com/s/ilui0zrvzpci5py/Corridor.pdf?dl=0

Now with Evil Mirror-Mirror Spock ( I skipped Mirror-Mirror Kirk because he has no cool goatee )! There might be lots of problems with this contribution from me... My Bamboo tablet is on the fritz and I am all frazzled from work. I might have gone too light on the shading, I just haven't had a chance to test print this... Please tell me if you notice anything obviously amiss with these two and I will do my best to fix it fast. By the way everyone, great looking horde here. My kids have been flying glennwilliams shuttle around and loving it (I did add a bottom to the craft for strength).

Yeah, couldn't fit a bottom and instructions on a page in 28mm. Fun exercise.
Remember, they have to yell, "ZOOM! ZOOM!"
