The theme for this months HOARD is People of the Sand! This can be any sort of miniature on the above theme or feel free to submit miniatures off theme. If you submit a figure, they must include both front and rear art, have a proper trimming outline, and include instructions for multi-part models. Recolors and figure mods are encouraged, and even uncolored designs are welcome. No nudity or sexuality, but bloody gory and horrifying is encouraged. If you have questions about how to design your figures, like formats, resolution, and stuff like that, see the HOARD GUIDELINES in this forum category. Entries for the Hoard will be accepted until the last day of July, 2015. People of the sand? What's that? That can be Arabian, Persian, Egyptian, Djinns, Ifrits, giant scorpions, etc. or anybody who lives in the desert. Have fun!

Not sure if they'd be accepted for the Hoard, but I figured my breakwaters set would also work as sand dunes, so putting together a sampler of it to submit if that would be OK.. It will have 2" sections in 2" and 1.5" widths and 1/4" and 1/2" heights, with the steep or gentle sloped sides, angled junctions, transitions to go between steep or gentle sloped sides at each width/height and the transitions to go between 1/4" and 1/2" heights. A few pics of the top tiles and the transition pieces from steep to gentle slopes. I'm also thinking of a rideable camel possibly as well...

I think a few sand dunes would be cool, or even a couple of tiles.

Dammit! Last time I checked, there were no replies to this thread, so I was going to post this...

Would recolors of vintage models be acceptable for this? I have downloaded copies of the Tente of Abraham and an Epinal # 1247 Tente Arabe, both of which if rescaled and cleaned up would be good projects for this topic. As these have been out of print for decades, I wouldn't have a clue as to how to contact the original designer
EDIT: Here is where I'm at thus far on cleaning up and modifying
On the first one, I want to enlarge it to two pages. The second needs mirrored backs for the figures and additional cleaning up

Seems acceptable just make sure the original artists are credited in the document.

Trust me, I know to always credit the source. In some of my posts, I may go overboard with that, even.
As I was researching things, I realized that when I was thinking about this Hoard, I was thinking Sahara or Arabia, but Desert Southwest, Gobi, the Outback, etc. also gave some interesting ideas

The Sand Dunes set is completed in PDF, except for a cover showing a variety fo pieces and assembly ideas. I'll work on getting an assortment of parts printed and assembled and photographed for a cover page for the set over the next day or 2. 16 pages, 18 Meg of terrain for your desert explorations.

I have not had time to work on anything, but I do have a random (inspirational?) thought. Why, in July, doesn't "people of the sand" get us thinking about beaches?

NB: I don't think I did enough to this picture for it not to be a copyright issue. Posted here as a joke more than an actual Hoard submission.

Oops. I almost forgot about this. I think I'm just going to clean up and re scale the antique Pellerin tent
That's assuming that anyone would find it a worthwhile addition. Spent two hours on this tonight, and I'm doubting that I'll be done by Thursday night.
I've been doing a mad scramble lately since my dad broke his ankle. Keeping things together with work and at home, then going to the farm late afternoon Fridays and coming home late Sundays. Maybe Eric will be gracious and give us a couple extra days

Worked on this last night again, only my rescale has it looking large compared to some figures and small compared to others. Is getting it in the middle the best I can do, or are there preferences?
I've gained a new appreciation of folks like Patricia over at Agency Eureka and others who do restoration work on vintage paper models.

Vermin King, I'd say go in the middle, if others want to adjust the scale they can do so thorugh their printer or PDF settings.

I was hoping to get a build of this done last night. Can't be until Monday, now as I am doing my penance at the farm after I get off work late this afternoon. For more information on Pellerin Epinal models, see pierreg.free.fr/carton/historiq/histoe.htm

Pencils down and thanks for the sand folks! Some cool stuff to build this week. Don't forget that the Papercuts Showcase categories are now open and the August Forum Horde, "Supervillains and Birthday Cake Battles" is now ongoing!

squirmydad: Been trying every day since it was posted now to download this, but it simply won't (about 25-30 tries in total - I lost count). Similar problem with the "Reign of Yule" hoard. I can't think it's an Internet or a "my computer" problem, given that in between failed downloads of each, I was able to pick up the circa 39 MB new Okumarts Dungeon Monster set (zipped file), plus numerous other large downloads (50+ MB) from OBS and other places in recent days and weeks. So I think it has to be a problem with the One Monk site and how it sends out zipped files, as this problem has been going on when I've tried downloading any of the files above about 15 MB from the One Monk site for the last couple of years. Assuming this can't be easily remedied, websites being as they are, can I suggest splitting the files into downloadable groups on the One Monk Hoards page - cutfiles and artwork, for example. Personally, not having a robocutter, or likely ever being rich enough to own one, all I'm really after are the artwork PDFs. That desert tent looks so gorgeous in the photo, but otherwise, I doubt I'll ever see it "for real"

Did you have issues with Land of Enchantment? I think it is file size for the issue. Reign of Yule is 30.6 Mb and People of the sand is 40.6 Mb.
I asked about Land of Enchantment because it is 21.3 Mb

I asked about Land of Enchantment because it is 21.3 Mb Yes. So far as I recall (it was last May...) it took several attempts to get it to download, but it did do so in the end (judging here by the log of my check-in time as compared to the file download time). I think that's why I forgot to "Like" it (just remedied!) on the Hoard topic here, as it had a lot of stuff I was interested in at the time.

Okay then, I've re-uploaded #131 and #135, please try it again if you would.
The cut files only take up kb of space so seperating them wouldn't greatly help the size of the download package. If there is still an issue then I'll think about breaking the package up into individual page packets.

It fails for me, too. It gets maybe 14MB into the download and dies. Quick question, squirmydad - I sent you a link to a dropbox folder that I think had more than you need - there's a PDF of the sand dunes, and a ZIP file with the sand dunes and corresponding cutfiles. If you included both, then you're getting an extra 20MB in your ultimate zip file... It's still a big download, but it'd only be 23MB. If you pulled the sand dunes into a separate file, it'd still be 19MB for the dunes.

Same here, I'm sorry to say. FH 131 got to about 21.4 MB before failing (the "fail-point" range has been anywhere between 12 and 23 MB in my attempts so far), while irritatingly, FH 135 got to just over 22 MB before it too died again. I think that's actually closer than I've ever managed with Yule previously, so a bit annoying!
It seems like there must be a problem on the export filters from the One Monk site, as I can't imagine what else would keep causing this so repeatedly, especially when I don't seem to have such problems with any other site (so far, at least...).

Okay, once more; I've broken the files up so if you look at the Hoard preview image it is no longer a DL link, instead the little blue boxes on the left are the Hoard broken into two smaller chunks. Give that a try please.

OK. The results are in...
FH131_1: Downloaded fine first try.
FH131_2: First attempted failed at 15.5 MB. Second attempt was fine, however.
So great, finally get to see the desert dunes and tent after all, and feeling on a roll, I tried for the Yule hoard as well (still just a single download, of course). Oh dear.
FH135: Failed at just 1.7 MB; can't remember that EVER happening so soon before! Second attempt failed at 25.5 MB. Third attempt failed at 24.4 MB. At which point I gave up...
From this, I'd say anything over 15 MB has the potential to cause at least minor problems, and anything over 20 MB will almost certainly do so. By the looks, anything much over 23 to 25 MB seems likely a guaranteed fail every time.

For the most part, everything downloaded fine for me today. I just double-checked all of my previously-downloaded hoard files, and found about a half-dozen that hadn't actually downloaded properly. I downloaded them all again today, and they're a-ok now. It wasn't a file size issue. One hoard file was only 3MB in size, but only 2.7MB had downloaded before it failed. If anyone's having serious trouble catching up with hoard files, I can put em up on dropbox for a while. Did you know the hoard now totals 124 files amounting to 874MB?!? Not too shabby!
More fun facts:
I had no idea that hoard 96 was a massive 180MB in size! There are 2 hoard files above 100MB, another four that are over 30MB. Almost 20 hoard files are over 10MB. There are over 100 hoard files under 10MB, and nearly 60 files are under 2MB in size. Over 60% of the total hoard size is from 10% of the files!
It won't happen soon, but I think my summer project will be to finally print/cut all of the hoards! I think the hoards will have to get their own personal 3-ring binder for storage...
