I was surfing the net for papercraft related stuff, as I do way too often, and I stumbled upon this blog post. dorkhorde.blogspot.dk/2012/11/groo-wanderer-from-eclipse-comics-wait.htmlGroo the Wanderer Eclipse Special (called so because it was issued by Eclipse Comics). I think I used to have that issue! Pretty sure I don't have it anymore, but I'm definitely going to sift through back issues and see if I can find it again. Or maybe try eBay. It'd be awesome to build those.

I recognise the cover, that's for sure. But I can't remember if my copies of Groo went into the loft or into the recycling during my last move....

I'm sure you could work from the images posted on the blog if you can't find the back issues. It is not like the artist or the publisher is going to get any cash if you buy a back issue on e-bay.

^ Well, I would like a copy of the issue. But you're right. I think I found something, however - one of my mates still have his old issues. He's gonna check for that particular issue, and if he still has it, I'm gonna make some good scans. If it's ok with forum policy, I can post it here too.

I like how he says that he did it because his favourite thing growing up was putting paper minis together. Wonder if Sergio Aragonés is still into the hobby... Think he'd be right at home here.

I met him once at a con alooooooong time ago .... I just remember thinking he was a really cool guy. at the time I had never read any Groo.... I have a complete collection of them now LOL I actually went so far as to take all the ladies that he drew in the comics at the bottom in the framing and I made a Girls of Groo calender LOL that was A LONG time ago ... hummmmm I wonder where that is now?
Sergio Aragonés Domenech is a Spanish/Mexican cartoonist and writer best known for his contributions to Mad Magazine and creator of the comic book Groo the Wanderer. Born: September 6, 1937 (age 78), Sant Mateu, Spain anyone got his e-mail ?? LOL we could invite him over !! LOL

^ Trust me, I looked, because I wanted to ask his permission to share those scans (he himself has the copyright for his work, he was ahead of his time in that area, too) - but the guy seems to like privacy, so the email addy is nowhere to be found.

remember when I said I have a complete collection of Groo comics..... well I dug it out ... I don't even remember buying this but I have this issue!! OMG!! and there they are all the models and it's in great condition!! why don't I remember this??!! LOL well anyway I'm going to scan them and probably do some face lifting as old comic scans have a tendency to get super pixelated, then I will show pics of my builds as that is not a violation of a VERY clear copyright that is absolutely still in force (I looked it up to) and yes he retained all the copyrights and renews them to keep them alive and well!

Copyrights don't get renewed. They're automatically granted at the moment of creation and stay in place for a certain period, the length of which is determined by the nature of the entity holding the copyright, and by geography. If it's held by a human being, the the copyright will stay in place until 50 years after the creator's death, though in some countries this has been extended to 70 or more years. For copyrights held by corporations the copyright typically stays in place for 50 years (again, this has been expanded to 70 or more years in some countries. In the US it is either 95 years from date of publication or 120 years from date of creation, depending on which is shorter. Thank Disney for this.)

good to know! is it a patient that you have to renew? well at any rate he holds the copyright to the pages and posting them here would be a violation right? at the very least, without the author's permission it would be un-cool. ok I just scanned all the pages in and I see here there are instructions giving us permission to copy them..... is this enough to post the pages here?

ok I just scanned all the pages in and I see here there are instructions giving us permission to copy them..... is this enough to post the pages here? Probably not. It seems to indicate that the purchaser of the comic can make as many copies as they like for personal use. It does not mention "sharing them" (the copies) with anyone. Things say "all rights reserved" on purpose, and the right to use is different than the right to publish/share.

While this is a small part of a comic book, and thus it would hardly affect the market should it be shared, I see no need to challenge fate, so I think we'd be better off not sharing those scans here. But that's my opinion.

Yes, without permission of someone who is probably still alive, sharing is probably not a good idea. I put up the carriage from the vintage model I did for Papercuts, but I haven't put up the Carriage House because I don't want to 'challenge fate'. I wonder if the good folks at Mad Magazine would be willing to give us contact information Or the webmaster of www.sergioaragones.com/

good to know! is it a patient that you have to renew? Copyrights are an inherent right so you automatically get it. With trademarks, you do get a degree of automatic protection but mostly they only apply if you've asserted that something is actually a trademark, and even then they only apply within your geographical area. Both trademarks and copyrights can be registered in order to give extra legal backing to your claims. It's quite common to register a trademark, but copyrights usually only get registered when it's likely that ownership of a creation is likely to be contested in court. Patents are separate from both and are concerned specifically with methods. If you have a method for doing something and it gives you an advantage, then patents prevent other people from using that method without your permission, but they only offer that protection for a limited amount of time, and only in the geographical area in which you have registered the patent. As for which you would need to renew, the only I can think of is the registration of trademarks. Patents are intended to expire so that you can benefit from your advantageous method, but not indefinitely. Copyright is meant to protect your right to profit from your creations for life. Trademarks are meant to prevent your competitors from passing their products and services off as yours, so the protection only really lasts as long as you're actively using them and thus you'd need to regularly re-register trademarks.

I had a look around the site. I found the following in the link page.
newsfromme.com is the home page of Mark Evanier, Sergio’s collaborator and the operator of this website. That’s why his site goes first.
There is a way to contact Mark Evanier on the web page. He might be able to help us. Get our Groo fix.

^ I'm planning to make tabbed minis out of them, so I can put them on Litko bases - I just haven't had the time yet. I will update when I get around to building them.

Wow, I remember these standees too! I had a couple of Groo comics about 20 years ago, loved the humor, and a few years ago when I started building paper models I remembered this one issue that had these two pages of cut-out miniatures in the back. The issue was long gone of course, and I never found out in which issue they were in until now. Thanks! No I can finally search in earnest

I noticed that the Groo standees use some rather simple tabs at the bottom to make them stand up (basically folding two tabs backwards, creating an u-shape if viewed from above). I don't like it at all, I guess it's fine for presenting them on the desk but not good enough for using them as playing pieces. I think I will modify the bases, keeping the tabs straight and sticking the whole figure into a plastic stand, or glue a printed baase under it.

I just cut the tabs down to where they would fit in a base

Well I finally got round to making up page 1.... I printed the scans out on A5 card - so slightly smaller than the original comic book - which meant they scale quite well with the others I have. Here is the man himself alongside a couple of fellow "literary" barbarians....
