I have been design dome and things by hand for some time. It would be alot easier with some form of software, especially for mor elaborate curves does any have any recommendations for paper curve generation software..preferable free

Rhino 3d has a 90 day evaluation period and Blender 3d is free.

I knew blender worked well for 3d modelling but does it unfold as well

I knew blender worked well for 3d modelling but does it unfold as well Ah, that's a different question. I don't know of any 3d modeling software that unfolds. Pepakura is still your best bet for unfolding. I use Metasequoia to change file formats into something that pepakura will recognize. Metasequoia is great for importing a variety of other 3d file formats.

Oops sorry for the confusion there. Blender does do a wireframe unwrap though I might play around with that it could be useful

i do all my unfolding with blender. works like a charm. there is an addon for the paper model related unfold part (as opposed to the uv/texture unfold) blender paper model unfold scriptif you have questions let me know.

i might add, the script produces svg files so you can edit the unfold with inkscape or illustrator ...
