The theme for this months HOARD is Monster Manual Monsters This can be any sort of miniature figure or model on the above theme or feel free to submit miniatures off theme. If you submit a figure, they must include both front and rear art, have a proper trimming outline, and include instructions for multi-part models. Recolors and figure mods are encouraged, and even uncolored designs are welcome. No nudity or sexuality, but bloody gory and horrifying is encouraged. If you have questions about how to design your entries, like formats, resolution, and stuff like that, see the HOARD GUIDELINES in this forum category. Entries for the Hoard will be accepted until the last day of January, 2016. As the hoards enter a new era, going back to the classics sounds like a great idea. Try to be a little patient as we try to sort things out. Thanks

What a fantastic theme for a hoard!! I wonder if okumarts has anything lying around that he couldn't fit into any of his Darkfast Dungeon sets.....

I'm going to put up a post for Hoard suggestions late this week, so be thinking of what may be useful to you. Halloween and Christmas themes are a tradition here, so those will be the same in 2016

But no fertility deity props (well, maybe, if they fall within guidelines). I was in a group that had a follower of Gig once. It was interesting...

I wonder how many versions of the Flumph will be submitted for this one? I would like to propose a "Robots versus Powered Armor" theme. I found my old Sketchbook from High School and I was a little obsessed with Robots and Powered Armor back then

Hate to be pedantic, but the Flumph wasn't in the first edition Monster Manual. It didn't appear until the Fiend Folio came out in 1981..... Although you could give one an eyepatch and a pirate voice and say he is a cleric of the Flying Spaghetti Monster for any Pantheon of the Gods hoard.....

Here are some monsters that I might take a swing at, just 'cause they seem fun. I have no real talent for making minis tho, so who know if any will see the light of day (so don't be afraid to do any of these yourselves!)
Axe Beak Giant Beetles (lots of kinds) Brain Mole Giant Frogs (lots of kinds)
Those seem to be good intro subjects for drawing...
And, my first thoughts went to the flumph. My kids cheered its existence in the 5th edition monster manual.

January is no longer a specific manual.
Calling all monsters!

Work in progress -- Eye of the Deep I love it - looks like a Beholder has mated with Zoidberg from Futurama......

I love it - looks like a Beholder has mated with Zoidberg from Futurama...... Yeah, I went looking for inspiration at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Index_of_Advanced_Dungeons_%26_Dragons_1st_edition_monsters and when I got to "Beholder-like monster that dwells at the great depths of the ocean, attacks with lobster claws," I thought that I had to try my hand at this Although the Leucrotta and Peryton were heavy contenders.

Giving it a go... I'm working on an Axe Beak. Trying a new strategy for laying down lines, since hand-drawing with my mouse at work leads to comical results. And by comical, I mean sad.

That is why I stick to buildings. I can follow the grid lines. I always considered Axe Beaks to be an under-used monster

I admit, the complete profile appearance will have to do, but it's something I'll consciously work on. I'm maybe on par with Egyptian carvings... Lunch break, and a ton of work issues to wade in before I can finish the feet and work on the feathers. I might revisit the head to try to get a little less profile.

If I do anything for this Hoard, I'm probably going to have to go old-school and draw something, scan it, then clean it up digitally. Only I can't find my old Monster Manual

Vermin King - you just let me know what monster you'd like to do, and I'll get you some material to work from. So, I've been pulling some goofy graphics in to texture my Axe Beak. I feel like I'm going to cheat a bit on the reverse side since it's mostly a profile shot, but I'm really shooting for completion more than perfection. I will lighten up the feathers on the neck a bit and work on shading and highlights. But, I need some LEGS first. The legs are going to be made a bit thicker. I fear that when cut out, they'll be disastrously thin... I also suspect that when I scale this down to whatever scale he needs to be at, all the detail will disappear, so I may end up redoing the textures at that point.

Oh, and through some sleazy colorization, I may do a variant with really bright plumage - red and blue... Right now, I'm going for a giant chicken sort of look. I don't see why EVERY beast in a fantasy world has to look like something out of the Feywild.

Many decades ago, I used to have a little talent in drawing and watercolor, but having not exercised those talents in years, I'm finding it a little difficult to get back into it. My first attempt at a Hippogriff was disappointing. I think I'm going to have to keep practicing for a bit before I make another attempt.
I suppose it could be the start of a deformed zombie hippogriff, but it would be disappointing even for that

Here's where I'm at... An Axe Beak is supposed to be "large" - between 7' and 9' tall. I think I went with the smaller of that range. Gonna print him out tonight, probably only to find he's too dark. Everything I draw is too darn dark! There's a week left in the month, so I might even go and make a couple extras for this guy... Nest? Eggs? Hatchling?

Eggs and hatchlings would make excellent objective markers.

So, an axe beak reminds me of an ostrich, and an ostrich doesn't have a nest. They have a mound they'd lay the eggs in. So, I may just make a couple simple egg standees - one unhatched, one cracked, one busted open with a head poking out (if I can) and one hatched with the broken shell around the base.

Haven't participated in this for some time... Here's a Beholder. That would be a 30mm base I believe..

Okay, my first response was 'adorable'. I think that's because MM1 brings back fond memories.
Thank you, and thanks for joining our merry band on this.
Now if I can talk someone into doing my hippogriff project that I cancelled ...

Yes - thank you for submitting the beholder! Two things to consider (well, I could try them myself): 1) Fill the small areas between the eye stalks with black, so folks don't HAVE to cut them out or manually color them in. 2) Rotate the head a bit, which may give it the illusion of motion. I'm thinking of rotating the front maybe a couple degrees clockwise (matching the main eye's direction) and then cut the black base that supports it using a curve that would also imply some motion. Just two thoughts I had when I saw it. Vermin King - I'm gonna try something *right now* regarding a hippogriff. I think it will be a total failure, but maybe it'll motivate a certain someone to pull off some magic for us.

Your hippogriff could not come out worse than mine. When I used to do more drawing, I would keep a failure close by so that I wouldn't repeat a mistake and to help me understand what needs to be changed. This failed attempt went out on trash day. Which I regret. The horse portion wasn't that bad. I shouldn't have pitched it
