Craig got me reviewing FUBAR again with his Dead Simple RPG thread
My son and I are Star Wars fans. I grew up in the 1990's looking at West End Games miniatures at the hobby shop wishing I had a job and ability to collect them and the great miniature wargame they made to support the D6 RPG. Sadly, WEG and their license expired within a few years of each other right after I got my first job and had the money to spend at the turn of the century. I had high hopes for WOTC and their D20, but miniature support was abysmal with just a few pewter figures (I still have the 28mm Scoundrel they made once) and pre-paint crap that followed before again they lost their license. Lets not even go into how they screwed up the Star Wars RPG making it nothing but D&D with light swords and laser guns...
At any rate, I found Seven Wonders Paper Friends (which is linked here) and made up a few of the miniatures. I had my son set up a platoon of Republic Clone Troopers (3 squads of 8 troopers) and I set up a platoon of Klankers (Battle Droids) using the same 3 squads of 8 droids. I pulled out some 28mm game terrain (GW LotR and a mishmash of home made) and we went about having a battle using FUBAR 4th Ed. and the Star Wars supplements from his site.
One of these days, I'll have to do a proper battle report. We just stuck to strait leg infantry with no support weapons or vehicles for this game. At first, my years of wargaming gave me and advantage, I had his squad that took cover in the building nearly wiped out by fire. His fire began to get more effective later, and took its toll.
Units laying on their sides are "Suppressed" Out of respect of the film, and this being my sons first miniature game, I didn't take suppression and just made great sound effects as my battle droids were blown up. After all, droids wouldn't morale check (much) and certainly aren't going to duck. They just take the hits and move forward...
My Klanker Platoon took down two Clone Squads during the game with good fire and a couple assaults. However, at the end, his last squad assaulted my surviving two droids in the building and easily wiped them out. My remaining three droids in my last squad retreated off the board handing my son his first, albeit very bloody, victory as a Republic Clone Platoon Commander. I told him Obi-Wan and Anakin would be proud (he is a Clone Wars cartoon fan after all).
