After having a close look at my cutting mat today, I saw that the holes I thought were there, weren't holes in the plastic mat (I already ordered a new one because of that ) but actually holes in a glue residue layer that has built up over time. As I am using my cutter almost daily I soon had my mat loosing its original glue and started using spray-on adhesive to make it stick again. I tried to wash it off with hot water and a scrub but it does not really come off (and now the scrub is all messed up with glue ). Does anyone have any experience what could be used to clean the mat? *EDIT*: I use 3M Spray Mount and according to the label it's one of the most dangerous things in the world (don't smoke, breathe, put into eyes, put into lakes ...) but it does not say what it is or how it can be removed.

According to the information available online (I found this free PDF download of the 3M Spray Mount specifications via the UK's Viking Industrial website), this is a solvent-based adhesive, so water - as you rightly noted - won't work. The only thing mentioned regarding clean-up is this: Spray nozzle or excess adhesive may be cleaned with white spirits. So that means you'd need to use white spirit to remove the glue, but I fear that will do more damage to your cutting mat surface than good in cleaning off the glue (that is, it's probably as likely to clean the mat off the glue...). New cutting mat and remember to never use the mat for spray gluing on again would seem to be the moral of the tale

I use 3M spray glue on my cutting mat. I have a special spraying station (that is, I've got a LARGE cardboard box that helps contain the spray a LOT) that I put stuff in so I can spray it. I rarely clean my cutting mat off. When I do, I use warm water, dish detergent and a hard-bristled scrub brush. I let it dry, it gets really sticky again for a while and the circle of life continues. I've had the same two cutting mats that came with my Silhouette SD for years.
You might try something crazy like vegetable oil? I had an accident with a broken bottle of Super77, and the Scotch representative (in addition to being VERY helpful in replacing the broken bottle) told me vegetable oil may work. Rubbing alcohol did nothing. In the end, I had actually smeared my hands with flour and sawdust and a million hand-washes and a shower later, my hands weren't all that sticky. But, I digress.

wyvern: what is white spirit? sounds like some shaman potion I also thought that maybe that layer is good as it becomes quite hard and so prolonges the life of the cutting mat.

I use Easy-Tack - it doesn't leave much residue between uses (about 20-30 cut pages.)

If you're in the US, you may know it better as "mineral spirit" (at least, according to Wikipedia), which sounds even more like a D&D monster...
