People have been kind to me and yet I am always amazed when someone takes the time in this hurried age to write something nice about my (or anybody's) work. But I thought this remark is exceptional and worth sharing. It's from here by user Vagabond. "You know I thought you were building this and I thought you were mad or at least slightly insane but now I realise you are designing it as well and can not conceive how awesomely mad you must be."Made my day

I'm so confused. Good luck Me too! That was why I needed to take a break last night But once built it looks much easier and works fine! This is the view from the top/outside And then the view from the bottom side The middle and bottom layer have flaps going in the other direction. So once they are locked with the edge ornament piece the roof parts cannot fall apart. Assembly also works very easy. You first move the top flaps into their space. And then - on the bottom side - you can lock the bottom flaps with this bend pattern into place. The bottom will then result in a nice, clean textured surface. And from the outside, the edge ornament holds it all together! I will probably build four production ready modules and then make a video, so you can see better how easy it goes.

I get it now. That ornament piece is like the roof peak I was playing with on fold-flat buildings, but I certainly didn't take it this far. Ingenious

Thank you, but no It is actually inspired by an old - or rather ancient - technique from carpentry. And I think I can make it even simpler. I started with the two rows of tabs because of the narrow roof I made for the tower (and will also do for the castle). But I it should work with just one tab same way...

Started working on stairs for the interior of the castle. Of course also fold-flat-able :-)

When you get the textures done, can I adapt them to my (free to share) fold-flat staircase?

When you get the textures done, can I adapt them to my (free to share) fold-flat staircase? Of course, fold-flat master Couldn't stay in bed in the evening, after sleeping my cold off all day. So I finished the texturing. It's the darker version, so I had to brighten the images to make it visible. Like the Asian Temple foundations, no stair geometry but a hopefully good looking texture to make it look like so.

Feeling better again. I hope the cold is almost over. So I started to work on finishing the rickshaw, making it release ready. Need to do the instructions ... Here is a little teaser :-)

Thank you guys! I have not forgotten about the little additions I want to make, so here I got to finish the two inch version of the stairs. It also has the lighter wood version. Now I need to make the inner doors and the roof base thingy!

I have been asked if I could make some ships for the feudal Japan era. So this is what I am working on too now :-) I have been working on concepts for some time now but with my orcish creativity going through rough times I put this on the top of my to-do for now. Right now I have finalized the shape of the boats. Compared to the first prototypes I hope you now are able to recognize the typical shape of these boats. I am planning to make three sizes. Small boats, like rowing/fishing boats. Medium size for fast traveling scouting ships and Large size ships like the sekibune and the larger atakebune type. Some of the boats have a pointed bow (like the sekibune) and some a "blunt" flat bow (like the atakebune). That is why I have designed two versions for each size. The basic shape is the same with only some extra geometry for the pointed bow version. That way all the options superstructures can be mounted on either version. If you look up sekibune and atakebune ships you will find that they look like a big box/house on a ship. That is what I mean with superstructres. Also there are smaller addons for the smaller boats. So I think this will be a fun modular way to build a fleet of ships of that period! Flat and pointed bow version (medium size ship shown) Comparing the old and new improved shape ...

Worked on the big boat today. How do you like the size of this? Once the superstructure is on, it should make for an impressive atakebune!

Thank you in advance for the Japanese ships! I am doing Imjin Wars and Colonial Japan, and these ships will be just the ticket! You are welcome in advance I think they will turn out really nice and being a paper model and all i can see a nice armada being built very fast! Now because the big boats are ... big I made some inner ribs so the hull form holds better in place and also the loads of minis you might place on top will not be a problem. Now on to the pointed version and then the superstructure!

OK here come the first superstructures. For the medium boat I have this so far. There will be another version as shown in the renderings but to get the unfold right I am working on this now as the other version is just an extension. And for the big boat I have made this very concept, just to get the size and overlap right. For the small boat I have loaded it with minis, just to see how many I can scramble inside. For the big boat the structure is too weak. I can do the same once it is in a more developed shape. And to get the scale esp of the big boat ... Just realized, I need oars!!!

These are looking really good. A good mod piece for the skiffs and smaller ships could be a platform piece to connect two skiffs. I was reading about an early Japanese naval battle that was conducted very much like a land battle at sea. They connected smaller boats with beams and platforms and had archers and spearmen stand on them during combat.

I'm sure it has happened in many cultures (Henry VIII had a naval battle with linked ships, too), but on The Story of China, episodes 3&4 on PBS, the Mongol fleet caught the Chinese fleet linked together to create a floating fortress, and the Chinese navy was decimated. I was tempted to make a comment about land strategies not working at sea, but then again, the Monguls used their 'horse tactics' with their ships and got the win.

I was reading about an early Japanese naval battle that was conducted very much like a land battle at sea. They connected smaller boats with beams and platforms and had archers and spearmen stand on them during combat. That sounds like a great idea! I am getting the impression the Japanese weren't the biggest friends of open sea. They rather stay on land or make being on sea like being on land. I am designing the big boat so that it can be modded into an even bigger boat. The white is the regular parts and the red would be insertions to make it grow. And, no, this is not a crusader ship Probably should have thought the use of color for this through! Reusing parts one should be able to make this, but maybe to make it easier I can add some special parts already prepare (like wider front and back parts for example). So I will also think about the platforms.

Started working on the texturing of the boats. I realized I forgot the rudder! Will add that for the larger boats... The unfold comes together nicely. I might need to add some trim space but I am very happy with the design now. It seems the Japanese did not use much metal, so no bolts. It all looks very pure and zen. Once I get the dirt layer on for weathering, it'll give it a more battle worn look.

Added the rudder and built the other version. I also added some more minor details on the inside wall. And an underside view. I have learnt that the interior actually looks a little different today. The Japanese didn't use frames but actually fastened the hull planks directly together with wood or metal braces or nails. So I will correct that (and probably leave the current version as an alternate option). Today I managed to start working on the medium ship super structure. I want to add some Flags in the corners and maybe some more details like an anchor and rope but I love it already :-)

How do you like these sashimono (flags)? I have made an easy version (no framework cutouts and should be better for mini placement). Ships on the horizon! :-)
