So I had a dream a couple of nights ago about restarting my real-world-style American Football board game, Varsity Bowl, but with simpler rules, and I went back to work on it that day. The rules are a lot simpler, and is more like "football checkers," but it sounds fun (haven't playtested it yet, might next week when I print out and assemble), and by the way, I live in a group home where people with intellectual disablilities live, so the clients (residents) might not understand the rules, and the staff (supervisors) might not have enough time to learn the rules, back when they were more complicated than they are now, so while you might think, "this isn't much" my main goal is for me personally to play this game in real life in the situation I'm in. I also mention in the rule sheets for my PDF that the players can make realism customizations, and make more rules. This game does not include a kickoff, punting, or field goals, but you can add them, and make sure to post them. Some simpler/less-realistic rules include: No kickoff, the drive starts from 10 yards (2 spaces) behind the 50 yard line. No first down line unless you want to add it. No incomplete passes or missed field goals unless you decide to implament rolling or coin tossing to determine it. No 3-point field goals, only way to score is a touchdown. You can, of course, roll to them if you want to in that game or custom ruleset. Each space = 5 yards. This can be expanded in a custom field. But like I said many times, you can customize the rules heavily, so make it as realistic as you want! Here's the PDF with everything you need: www.mediafire.com/?uccnya9pka5w030I will probably add screenshots soon!

I'd like to see a report of how it plays in real life, too, along with photos of the game in play

I played it, by myself, with 6 SPT (Spaces Per Turn), and it was a high-scoring game. Maybe with less SPT, it could be closer and more challenging. I built it, and photos coming soon. I might make a Team Nintendo (for free of course), with my customized models of some of my favorite Nintendo characters (Mario and Luigi surprisingly not included, mainly the animal ones).

One thing is, the final assembly can be pretty flimsy. Notice how some objects (lightpoles, scoreboard, goalposts) are propped up agianst some things (clay, my XBox 360, etc), and I used Sticky Tack to keep the field (board) on the table. Also notice that the ball that it in the quarterback's hands is attached by sticky tack. And take note how I'm standing up the player figures; I use a small lump of green modeling clay. I also cut a little below the figures' box on the printout sometimes, leaving a little white space, so you can just insert that in the green modeling clay stand, and you can see the players' feet/shoes. Gameplay-wise, I also tried experimenting with Spaces Per Turn (SPT) and I found that moving one figure at a time per turn is the most competitive, where the defenders can literally chase and tackle the ballcarrier with ease. Four SPT usually ends up in the wide reciever breaking away from the rest of the group, and scoring a touchdown. Two SPT is probably balanced.

Also, after getting scores too high, I decided to give the whole "roll/coin toss" thing a shot with the coin toss. Boy how the element of chance is a huge game-changer. The Birdsville Birds took the lead early, then the Bluesville Blue Dragons were unsuccessful on their drive, then later scored, they were both unsuccessful on their final drives, making incomplete passes and getting tackled, and finally it went to overtime, the Birds gained only 10 yards until fourth down, and then the Blue Dragons made a pass on their OT drive, the Birds were unable to catch up to them, scored the touchdown, and thus won the game! Like I said in the PDF, you can even assign different values (dice, roll less than or equal to that number to be successful, roll more and be unsuccessful) for different teams, for things like Passing, Tackling, 3-Point Field Goals, PATs, etc, so that way the good teams will be the good teams, and the crappy teams will be the crappy teams.

A crease down the centre of the the light standards would do a lot to stiffen them up. Some triangular flaps on the ends of the grandstand would help prop them up. I made a hoard of kobolds for my son a few weeks ago and he uses sticky tack for their bases.

Update: I made a Mini Field expansion pack, for people who want to fold their field all in one, and take it a bunch of places, without crumpling it up too much, and it has some new stadium features, like a press box and smaller away grandstands, a couple of things I will include in future revisions of the main PDF. I also made Team Nintendo, with DAZ versions of my favorite Nintendo characters, not neccessarrily the most popular ones. No Mario or Luigi, sorry. But Fox, Falco, Mewtwo, Iggy, Larry, DK, and Bowser! Plus, Fox and Falco have barefoot/alternate outfits on the next page! (I'm not a believer in the StarFox leg amputation theory, in case anyone brings that up). I might make Team Daveybird, which will have me (my internet Cardinal-bird-headed African American self, along with characters I more recently created and a couple of old characters), Team Randle County (characters I made a long itme ago, around 2004-05, will contain some duplicates trom Team Daveybird, mainly SlimyScaly and Lizzie, unless I can find different people for my team), and some real High School football teams (team colors and uniform styles only, no real players or numbers), like from Indiana, Ohio, Texas, etc. Mini Field PDF: www.mediafire.com/?vn9nqc2tw9n5gu2Team Nintendo PDF: www.mediafire.com/?a29gglyzbpbfayz

Sorry if I made the Team Nintendo players look a little "interesting." Bad pec modeling. Manboobs. I corrected it later.
