Hello everyone Hope someone can help me with a little problem that's become a major one for me.
I would like to try hand at making some paper terrain but once my builds leave sketchup I get stuck....
Lets say Im working with a simple box 50, 50, 20mm
I prefer just draw it out in sketchup already flattened as its easy for me to see the 3d object in 2d terms and use sketchup for measuring and control over angles.
Ive tried printing to pdf then opening in gimp so I can learn to texture them. When I print from gimp the pieces come out too small. Correct ratio to each other but get like 30mm instead 50mm.
Then tried exporting from sketchup as 2d and repeated to same result....
Then I installed flattery, made the box, unfolded it and exported as svg. Same result....
Then I exported the box to unfold in pepkura... printed out and again the sides too small
I know for ya real artist this probably easy fix inside gimp (or whatever program using,) but for person like me just learning to use these programs its nerve wracking.
Any ideas on how to correct my issue?

This may sound a little bit over the top, but can't you create in sketchup, export, unfold, import into GIMP and the re-create in GIMP, using the the import as reference?
This way you would create the build a gain, but directly in GIMP with full control over the measurements...

I have yet to venture into Sketch-up, so I'm afraid I can't help, but I am very interested in following this discussion

I don't know how sketchup works I would use GIMP "scale image" (or "scale layer") and fix it there. Also, if you are drawing in 2d anyway you can just use GIMP to start with. There is a tool for rectangles and you can draw lines locked to a 15 degree increment angle, at an arbitrary angle or even free hand.

I figured out scaling but don't know how to measure things. Guess I got learn more about GIMP.
Might give up on pepakura when get to models to complex for my fully imagine unfolded. I read in another thread that Ultimate Papercraft 3D better at keeping size so will think about buying it.
Thanks for input guys

This is just a guess, but it sounds like you're saving the output file at a different resolution to the one you're opening it as. You may be saving the file at 72dpi which used to be the traditional screen resolution, and opening it at 96dpi which is the new standard screen resolution.

You can measure in GIMP with the caliper tool. It is something like the 11th icon in the toolbox. You can choose to measure in pixels, inches, mm or whatever from the menu at the bottom left of the image window. Choose your units before you click the tool or it will measure in the old units. I often switch between pixels and mm when I draw and I also use quarter inch margins when I do layout.
BTW For me GIMP defaults to 72dpi

If all else fails, I am using Blender as my modeler which allows to unfold and export to SVG which in turn Gimp is able to import. I have not tried this path but it might give you more control.
How will you layout your unfolds using your workflow?

Like said Im a total newbie at that and apparently my ideas wont override biting off more than know how to chew hehe

Appreciate all the suggestions guys. Gives me more things to look up; like I had no idea DPI could effect anything (Im lucky to even know what it stands for,) I mistakenly thought 30mm is 30mm and all the software could agree on that.

I usually work in Sketchup, unfolding 3D models using a combination of the native folder in Sketchup, and manually unfolding.I then export to Photoshop or Gimp. I use layers in Photoshop to make lines for references to get the scale correct from the export. I'll frequent;y also then further fine tune the layout and shapes using Paint. The I go back to Photoshop/GIMP to perform the texturing.
