Ok, so if I wanted to take my avatar pic (just left of this post) and use some kind of filter in GIMP to make it look more like a Onemonk or other stylised papecraft model, how would I go about doing that? I had filters back when I was using Photoshop, but that was years ago and I don't even remember what they might have been called.
Thank you for any and all help and/or suggestions.

All I can say is play with it. I was reminded on the Dewback and Jerba that the 'Cartoon' filter isn't what you want ... probably. I play with Light, Contrast, Hue and usually have to overlay that image with decreased opacity over an image with solid colors to get something I can accept.
Yes, I am no expert. I'm more like the Red Green of GIMP... 'Any tool can be the right tool'

You should check out the Prisma app for your cell phone. It's on iTunes and Google play. Basically it takes any photo and redraws it in the style of the artist you choose. The results are amazing!

I have to agree. I tested it on a couple images I am going to use on the Cantina exterior figures. It went a little overboard, but using Gimp, using this as a base, and doing an overlay of the original image, adjusting opacity, it yields a very satisfying image

Only the first image worked well (Obi Wan). It rescaled my Dewback and Jerba and Jawas. By the time I got scaling right on the Jawas, and played with the original image and cartoon image, then merged, I found I needed to go back and mess with the original images (I did remember to use the rescaled original images) and ended up with a slight improvement, but not enough to warrant the time. When I went through the process with the Dewback, I decided to just stick with my original image.
This can be useful, but not necessarily something that will work every time.

I work primarily in Photoshop rather than GIMP, and use a variety of filters from ( in artistic) drybrush, watercolor, palette knife, sponge, paint daubs, and (sketch) photocopy and stamp, and then use varying layers of opacity and effects ( multiply, screen, overlay an color mainly) to get the effect that I'm looking for, sometimes it takes up to 11 or 12 different filters and layers to get to where I want it.

I barely use artistic filters in Photoshop at all. I mainly use "Clouds", "Difference Clouds", "Add Noise", "Gaussian Blur", "Motion Blur" and "Unsharp Mask", though I'll occasionally use something else. What I do use pretty often are the Adjustment layers. I use Levels, Hue/Saturation, Curves, and Gradient Map quite often. I also make frequent use of the Layer Options like "Bevel and Emboss" and "Drop Shadow" and "Stroke".
