Hi, everyone. I've been working on some 15mm warbands for Song of Blades and Heroes. They're all 300 pointers, printed on Canon matte photo paper (that stuff is great!), mounted on 1/2 round magnets, and sealed with matte decoupage. Since we don't have any 15mm terrain I had to make some of that, too. Here's a few pics: 30 and 15mm Ogre 30 and 15mm 300pt Elf Warband 15mm 300pt Undead Warband with a 15mm WWG Portal I also finished a 15mm 300 pt Orc Warband (that's the one the 15mm Ogre belongs to). I'm really loving how nicely these minis come out, and, even at 15mm, because the photo paper is thinner, they're still pretty easy to cut out. Thanks for such a great product, Jim. Luckyjoe

Very cool. I can't get over how well the figures look at 15mm scale. I can see why good paper helps. JIM

Excellent!
As far as I'm concerned, 15mm is the way to go... the best of both quality and quantity volume (I can house more in a smaller area).
Nice job on the 15mm's luckyjoe!
Glad you got the conversion thing figured out!

15mm just plain rocks. The other total upside is the fact you can fill a table with a cityscape and it feels like it truly living city.
Make sure you nab the warhammer houses that Dave did, these add so much depth to the world you are building.

15mm is the way to go for me as well. I'm really impressed by how well the figures hold up in both detail and durability at so small a scale.

Thanks, guys. And thanks for introducing me to 15mm. I have a few 15mm metals that I really like, but have never painted. I'm just intimidated at the thought of trying to paint them. This way I can have beautiful 15mm minis without the painting hassle. And thanks for the tip on Dave's buildings, Lord A. I'll check that out. Were they the one posted about on Lead Adventure a while back? I may already have them.

Oh, but you will, you will!
Just thinking that the card used in this printing need not be as thick as normal. I use 200gsm and am thinking of dropping down to 160gsm - this would make the figure easier to trim but should still retain its strength due to the total size.

Yup, the paper I use (Canon Matte Photo) is 170 gsm and it works just fine!

I may actually give it a go. I wanted to try using photo paper a while ago, but the A4 packs I found in Staples were prohibitively expensive (about £17 for 20 sheets, as opposed to the £5 for 50 sheets I'm spending on 210gsm white card).
However, last week I found packs of matt photo paper in the Works (cheap stationers and bookshop), 40 6x4" sheets for £1.99, so I grabbed a pack. I could theoretically use a sheet of that at 15mm the same way I would a sheet of A4 at 30mm, and get the nicer finish. Funny thing is that although it doesn't feel it, it's actually heavier than the card, at 235gsm.

one of the things I learned when working in the office supply biz it that the weight of paper is not consistent through other types of mediums. For instance in the states 110lb cardstock is nowhere near as stiff as 80lb cover stock. Also 55lb photopaper is about the same stiffness as 85lb cardstock. What this means is don't go by weight unless your staying in the same style of paper. There are several different ways to measure paper weight here are 2 of the most common. "GSM" or grams per square meter and "LBS" pounds per 1000sq ft. This can get somewhat confusing but all papers are not the same. Cover stock is more similar to matte board rather then cardstock. Also things can stiffen a sheet of paper while not adding too much weight such as lamination and photopapers finishing All in all your best bet is to go the the copy center at your local office store and get a few sample sheets to do test prints on to get one that suits your taste.
In your case Aestelon it is totally possible for the 4x6 photopaper you bought thats 235gsm to actually be thinner and flimsier then the 210 cardstock you have been using.

It turns out the photo paper is thinner, but not much flimsier; I think it's probably actually a hair denser than the card. It certainly takes more effort to score than I expected. I tried printing a sheet of TF soldiers out and they look very nice. I only got to actually cutting edging one fig late Friday night, but it's very pretty. I may well do a batch of 15mm figs on top of the 30mms, particularly since the game rules I'm working on are supposed to be compatible with a variety of scales; these could help me test that theory.

Oh, good, Aestelon. I'd like to see how those come out. Please post some pics. For me, the photo paper has been much easier to cut and trim because I had been using 80 pound coverstock, which is actually thicker and more dense that 110lb cardstock. Luckyjoe

A little update. I managed to finish a couple more 15mm Warbands for Song of Blades and Heroes using One Monk minis. I made a Good Human Warband and an Evil Human Warband. Also made a Fat Dragon Games Dragonshire Church and a couple of the Dave's Games Encroachment of Chaos buildings that Floyd was kind enough to link to me. The buildings are on a 15mm scaled Fat Dragon Dragonshire streets city board which is on a 20x30 inch piece of 1/2 inch thick foamcore. I gotta admit I'm loving the 15mm scale. Easy to store, and the buildings are a lot quicker to make. Here's a few pics if you're interested. The cityboard. As you can see, plenty of room The Evil Humans, pictured with a 30mm Cleric from Dungeon Adventurers The Good Humans Bandits & Brigands, for use with either Warband Steeple top removed for archers Progress so far - 41 minis, 5 warbands -Orcs, Undead, Elves, Evil & Good Humans. They're all sitting in a little metal box. (all have magnet bases) And I have printouts for Goblins, Kobolds, and Dwarves. Thanks for looking. Luckyjoe

Awesome! That scale is looking really tempting. The best thing is that I don't have to change a thing about my designs, just print them at 50% or print two copies per sheet.
This may also be a good scale for MDRG, or even a mass sci-fi battle game. JIM

Awesome! That scale is looking really tempting. The best thing is that I don't have to change a thing about my designs, just print them at 50% or print two copies per sheet. Even better - four copies! That's why my 6x4" (basically A6) photo paper works so well; I can just print a normal A4 sheet at 50% (the width and height are halved, rather than the area) and it fits perfectly!

Thanks, Jim. You're right about how easy it is. And I think I like the 15mm size even better. I know I like the way I save on ink and paper. Aestelon: I have been importing them into PSP, cutting out excess white space, and reducing them to 50% size. Then I import them by groups into Word. Doing it that way is a little more work intensive but really maximizes paper space. You can get a lot of 15mm minis on one page. You should see my Goblins page. Luckyjoe

Oh, I do a similar thing whenever I print any models, except I do it in GIMP. If, for instance, I want to print a sheet of TF soldiers, I'll open a page in GIMP, erase all the indicia, and fill the middle space with however many special weapons troopers I can squeeze in. Then I'll just re-save it as a PNG (to save me doing the same thing with the same models later) and print it off. I do the same when I want to print specific parts from F&T sets, too, or making one of my Hybrid mod sets.

What size are those magnets? 15mm or so? Where did you get them? This all looks great!

The magnets are 1/2 inch across and about 1.5mm high. I got them from Hobby Lobby. They even have adhesive on one side, just peel off the cover piece and stick on your base texture piece. I used WWG Hinterlands texture scaled to 15mm, just cut out 1/2 circles. The magnets came 16 to a pack for $1.99. I bought 4 packs and I already need more. Kobolds and Goblins - I'll need 38 for just those warbands . Luckyjoe

Not a bad price, really. Don't have any chain hobby stores anywhere near me, unfortunately. I suppose Home Depot would be a good place to try, but I haven't been in there since I quit!

I got another 15mm warband done. This time Kobolds. 18 of them for 300 points, including a Commander and Shaman. Then some new 15mm Monstrous Golems, including a Rage Golem from the Mad Scientist free set: Full-sized and 15mm Stone Golems -the big guy is HUGE Also got a little more progress on 15mm Town: I'm really loving Jim's minis in 15mm. They're a perfect match for Song of Blades and Heroes, also. Next up will be a Goblin Warband. 300pts of Goblins will outnumber even Kobolds under SBH rules. Thanks for looking Luckyjoe

The building with the brown roof, did you print it on photo paper and the rest of the buildings on card stock? The colors on it are so much richer and it really stands out.
