As I have thoroughly overthought this, I am hoping that even with an elephant-stopping headache, I might be able to get this worked out tonight.
Would a railroad type coupler work?
EDIT -- Okay, the shallow angled part is the front of the Onager. On the trailer, I'm assuming that the shallow-angle part is also the front? That means two different boxes. Maybe I should build another Onager before I do the hitch. It looks like a quick build.

I wish I'd posted that sketch I was going to do the other night. When I worked on this last night, I'd forgotten the geometry, so I had to re-invent things, taking longer than it should and with my problem of Turbo being stuck 'On' all the time, I'd have to break off and throw things back on the charger.
So, tonight, I just printed off the Onager (in tan, like Eric's trailer) and Eric's trailer, just Page 1, which I used the Convoy Open Bed for the texture, making it a flat-bed.
The trailer, I've decided (at least for me) will have a permanent hitch. The main Overlander Onager unit will have a retractable hitch. The hitches will look like railway couplers, with a pin whose cap looks like the connected couplers

Okay, I have an Onager and trailer, but it's a touch late to get the hitch boxes done tonight Can't you just picture some big ol' plasma weapon mounted on the trailer?

That's looking pretty sweet!

Actually, the only thing I've shown so far was putting the Open Bed Texture from the Convoy in the blank area on the Chassis part that Eric modified. If you are doing the trailer, be aware that there will be a wide sliver of the white on the tracks that doesn't get covered by the chassis. On my copy of the file, I just continued the front and back wheels around into the white. I should have dry fit, but I had the glue ready to go (I put a glob of glue on card and apply with a toothpick). If you dry-fit, you will see how much needs to be darkened before gluing.

Continued work on this yesterday, only I think I am heading down a rabbit trail. I think the only salvageable parts are the boxes to mount the hitches to.
I have a new idea however
EDIT --
The idea that I was checking out was the LaGanne-Hess tow hook system.
I originally had planned on a retractable connector that can be pulled out of the hitch box, and would pivot for turns. The trailer connector would be fixed.
The original plan had two major issues: limited pivoting and complexity of build.
It looks like it would look great, but even I consider this to be a fiddly build that has a likelihood of failure
The LaGanne-Hess system would be simple. Using the GHU hook for both units, retractable on the Onager and fixed on the trailer, connected by a shorter towbar.
To make it more simple, it can be built with fixed hooks on both units.
Looks very promising

I haven't built it yet, but it sure seems like it should work.

Looks like it should work nicely! I'll have to give it a build after we get settled in to our new house lol.

This ought to do much better. Shortened the connector bar a lot and the hook support piece a little I will have to remember to add the new connector piece to something else I print off in the future. I can live with the hooks being a tad bit long. All that open space begs for something to put in there ... hmmm

Just a thought - Wouldn't a simple Hook-and-Eye style have been easier?

I first wanted to go that route, but it doesn't fit the Ebbles Style, so I came up with a fiddly idea that had the couplers that could be joined by a pin cap or magnet.
That's when I came up with the LaGanne-Hess mod. What better way to match the Ebbles Style than an Ebbles Solution.
I had also considered a downward-pointing hook on the trailer fitting into a loop on the powered unit. I almost immediately tossed the idea. The Onager is an off-road vehicle for non-horizontal terrain. To allow for crossing peaks and valleys, I opted for a double-jointed hitch.
Probably more info than you really wanted, but I think it pretty well describes my thought process

Much more the thing ... AND ... easy to build Tried to find something suitable to put it on to show how it would look on hills and dells, but you'll have to use your imaginations

You know - this thread inspired me to have a go at making my very first paper vehicle! I downloaded the Onager, printed it out, and was having a great old time..., until I tried to put it together. Don't get me wrong, the model is awesome, and about as straightforward as you can get (I imagine)..., I just apparently suck at paper modeling. The results are..., less than spectacular. I haven't even attempted to fit the curved wheel tracks, as my battered ego can't take it just yet. I can see that I am going to have a great deal of fun getting up to speed on my "glue this tap to that part while simultaneously holding three other angles together" skill set.

No worries - I'm not giving up, just...er, ...re-assessing my skill set. I will give the old M11 a try, and doubtless glory will await!
