I'm distracting myself from caves and caverns for a couple days, but trying not to be idle. If I get sucked into Skyrim again, I may never get back to paper. I started tinkering with a temple set, and have been having fun playing around. Here's a shot of a wall with a large stone door. though I kinda like adding a splash of color to the walls

I love it! The "splash of colour" version might have a whitewash over the bare stone. I'm not an expert on Aztec or Maya ruins, but I know a few things

By whitewashing over the bare stone, are you saying that rather than using the tan stone, it should be more white? I think that would veer too far away from where I want to be, but I might not be visualizing it all that well.
I do want to try applying color over the relief on the door. I haven't spent much time on this yet. I have a couple other ideas to apply to the walls, but I want to get working on some floor tiles.

The color is too uniform - should be more bleached, splotchy, and dirty. (IMO) I only saw it as "kid colors" immediately, and wondered (before I read the text) if it was a printer problem.
Perhaps some more naturally occurring colors?

'Whitewash' would be an interesting texture. Not sure how it would be done. More white pigment would be in the deeper pores and cracks, less on the stone surface, but still there, and yet the deeper pores and cracks would still have shadow. It sounds like it would be a time-consuming endeavor

oldschooldm - I agree. This was a (almost literally) 1 minute effort to apply a color layer over the base wall, while I'm at work. Though, most of the pictures I've seen that depict temples and things have bright candy colors. That, and it'd be interesting to see how it prints. I will try applying some simple color layers to add more variation per-brick in terms of brown-ness, and I'll add a grunge layer for peeling the dye, and for adding some dirt. I will save the bright pastel palette for the Easter Egg Hunt set. Vermin King - I don't think it'd be a time consuming process once I learn how I want to manipulate the layers. Test prints will also be in order to see how things play out once applied in bulk on a table. I don't want to distract - in a sense, I want my textures to create a pleasant but somewhat neutral backdrop. I will happily leave the focus on the awesome artwork of the minis.

Trying to get a couple variants shown... postimage is finicky at times.

So far I favor the pink and blue one the best -- it doesn't have to be dirty if it's in use and tended by priests!

A photo of the printout isn't gonna do it justice, but I did a test print with slightly darker green/blue/red coloring of the top/bottom border, and I really like it. I applied the color adjustments to the Mayan calendar disk on the door that turned it into a nice golden brown, but left the door a sand color. I'm going to run with it for a bit - basically I'll let the printout sit on my desk 'til tomorrow morning, and if I look at it again and smile on the inside like I'm smiling now, I'll whip up some matching posts and print out enough to make a 6" by 6" room, then I'll try taking pictures of a real build. I think I will bust out some of my okumarts cultists and maybe a snake or two from the same set to fill the halls.

... If I get sucked into Skyrim again, I may never get back to paper... Yeah, internet and games are the new age temptation one has to learn to manage or they'll take over your life! Which software are you using for modeling and/or painting your textures?

Which software are you using for modeling and/or painting your textures? I use Silhouette Studio to make template (and cutfiles) and GIMP for everything else. I have used sketchup for models to help make templates too.

More white pigment would be in the deeper pores and cracks, less on the stone surface, but still there, and yet the deeper pores and cracks would still have shadow. It sounds like it would be a time-consuming endeavor In GIMP you can control the intensity/visibility of a layer with layer masks (white = 100% visible, black 0% visible). If you use a grayscale version of your color texture you could control visibility to be in the cracks or not in the cracks. Alternatively with edge detection (in the filters) you can select just the edges. I have not tried it but I think one could "whitewash" using these functions. Regarding dirt and weathering, it is true that when you look at pictures of temples they might not read "dirty" but for a tabletop model usually some dirt looks great as it looks more used than pristine. But of course it depends on the look you want to achieve. I usually put dirt on it's own layer so one can print a neat or dirty version as desired. In general I believe that whatever accentuation you want to use, a little exaggeration does no harm as the player often is farther away and details still remain visible then. That is something I learnt when I painted minis and found very helpful.

I made some pieces parts so I could arrange them on my table. These are really early pieces - and they helped me identify a whole bunch of little details I want to work on. The floor tile is a proof-of-concept more than anything right now. I've also done a fair bit of twiddling on the walls, so hopefully I'll have time to do another round of test prints this week!

Tonights work... I had almost an hour at the computer! I prepped another wall piece - a 6" wall with a long flat planter - and started working on a large wooden door. Not sure when I'll have more computer time, but the next thing I will work on is the flooring.

Looks great already. I can see Dr. Jones about to enter :-) I love the floor tiles tile pattern. The big and smaller tiles make it so much more interesting.

My wife was very tolerant of me neglecting the family a bit this weekend... I was able to get a fair bit of packaging done. 14 PDFs are put together, and there are maybe 10 - 12 more PDFs to go. Those PDFs, though, are all about 3" and 6" walls, and 6"x6" tiles, and I think I've got the bulk of those pages exported and ready for assembly. I also built more bits - I did up a set of stairs with side railings, 1" walls, 2" walls and some 3" tiles. This week, I'll build more 6"x6" tiles and some 3"x6" tiles to give me a good foundation for some promo pictures, and I'll build a boat-load of 3" and 6" walls, because they only take a few minutes to assemble. I really liked how this picture came out.

GIMP can be overwhelming if you're not familiar with the tools it provides. The hardest part I had learning it was simply knowing what things are called so I could google for help... If you need any advice, and you've run dry asking google for help, there are lots of us around here who know enough GIMP to be dangerous.

LOL. My 13-year-old agrees with me that the wooden doors I slapped together don't look good enough. He's my biggest critic, and he's rarely wrong, so the doors need to be redone! Still I was able to slap together about 30 walls and three more tiles today... time to figure out which minis I'll drop into a diorama!

Starting to prep for promo pictures... I only had a few minutes this evening after doing real texture work. I'm still trying to think up a name for the set.

I need to start work on the Maiden for a planned game in October (yes, I'm anticipating it will take me that long to build haha!) but I can't wait to get my hands on this set. I love it.

The Maiden took me about a week, because I was confused about several of the assembly steps. I leaned heavily on the WWG forums for assistance, which meant spending some days staring at my half-built boat and hitting refresh on my browser a lot. I recall being confused about the ratline extensions. It's a beautiful model - *everyone* should own The Maiden. I'd love to redo it some day using photo paper (I used cheap cardstock - I was young and foolish) and the kitbashed 3d masts and stuff. It's HUGE, too. I hope you have space to store it! I tried to search the WWG forums for my thread, just to relive the fun... Can't even search for "maiden" because it's "too common". Sigh.

I think I have enough walls now to play with! I'm filling up my shoebox with more bits, but there's still a lot of room. I think tomorrow I'll make a bunch more tiles, and get the edging pieces printed off. I also want to do 3 more stairs (maybe 5) because I want to do something fun with them.
