One of my favorite derogatory phrases is 'rat bag'. I even had a cat named Rat Bag once. I evidently picked it up from that movie.
My name is Dave, and I like anything linked to Monty Python WAY too much...
I believe my cat Griselda was named for a character from Jabberwockie...

Some WIP pics
Geometry for the jolly boat and gun boat is locked in.
The small rowing boats have inlays so you can switch from a more real to a more useable-with-minis version. Here I have switched to a 2 bench version and was able to squeeze 3 minis on the "deck" and 2 in the front and back!
For the gun-boat I have managed to get all these inside. Once I put in a mast there might be a less space. And if you wonder why you are seeing the behind of the minis, I just sketch-textured the boat from this side and wanted Kev's captain looking forward :-)
In the meantime I have also worked on the texturing of the jolly boat. The basic version will look like this.
I will also make color variations, like a white outside for the NAVY and a dark version for the sinister pirates.
Now I need to build it!
Cheers, Chris

Can I also suggest a heavily weathered "washed up on a desert island and discovered years later" version?

Can I also suggest a heavily weathered "washed up on a desert island and discovered years later" version? Yes, you can. I have not started the weathering layers yet That would be really bleached and with scratches, right?

I saw your Patreon post about possible 2D masts instead of 3d, 2.5D might serve you better than 3D, but will still be just as fiddly as making a 3D mast. I like 3D masts as it gives me a "handle" to pick up the boats, unless they are full of minis. Love the look of these.

Olli Bizer would paper wrap spaghetti, bbq skewers or dowels for the masts of his ships, depending on the scale. It certainly yields a sturdy mast

Not sure what the 2.5D would be for that. I'll make a prototype for the 2D version. I think if the looks are good; people will use it. Of course a 3D mast will be better looking.

I have also seen masts done as tall thin pyramids. I have used "V's" in my small ships. The advantage is that when you go to store them they can be flattened or just nested.

This looks like a really good boat that is still in the boatyard and has never touched the water. I'm looking forward to seeing the weathering.

Here is my little work crew testing out the updated rowing boats ...
And here I have the other paper minis work with the jolly boats... Note how Gandalf is not letting the Shark pass. It's his thing :-)

How do you like the docks so far?
The metal rings and the posts peeking through the planks are optional. I have two widths for smaller and larger dock sections.
Here are the ramps you can use to walk on to the docks from the beach ...
I will add ladders for when the boat is smaller than the height. I first thought of making lower versions but actually looking at the ships to come I will later make higher ones (maybe stone) for the larger boats.
I learnt a lot when adding the barnacles :-) Texturing is always surprising me. This time I spent to much time on modelling 3D barnacles and populating them in Blender in a particle system only to find that on the posts they would be so small that it didn't matter. So in the end I used a picture I made out of lots of references I found and handpainted together and am very happy with the size and the detail left when you look closely. Of course they are optional as most details. So when you want a fresh new dock section that is also fine (but who wants new?).

I actually got this background pic from a friend who is just now in Thailand on vacation. I did not have anything like that in my archive!

Here's a look at the white build test. I am very happy with the geometry . The mast is a rough early test and too heavy for this kind of vessel. But I am working on a little "system" of masts, so I will be able to make I need, from small boat to big galleon and not have to reinvent them again and again (more on that later).

Progress with the sailing rig. This version is easy to build and assemble/disassemble.
Also here's a little preview at a BLUE skinned ship.
I made it so you can change the colors of the hull, top railing, the top "line" and the bottom "line" all independently. For now I have blue, red, green, yellow, white and black as options. Mix in the modifiers (lighter, darker, warmer, cooler and bleached) and you have ... (you do the math ) many, many options for the look of the boat!
