How had is it to convert studio3 files to SVG ones to be used on a Cricut machine?

The business edition ($99) supports exporting SVGs. I don't own it, so I don't know what the output is.

Huh. Tried it and darn it all if it "just worked". YMMV. I'd like to know more about the Cricut software. If you get this working, I'd love to know about the process of making the cutfiles, making the PDFs more compatible, etc.

I have tried that one with one I created of a Roman seas ship and on one monk's elf cavalry files. the Cricut did not like it. it took a 8.5 by 11 file and expanded it to 13 by 14 or the software crashed. Even trying to reduce it down to the proper size the cut lines were all wrong. As a comparison the Cricut software is not as easy to use and not as many features. There tech support is terrible. All they did was told me to go to their tutorials. They could not explain why a 8.5/11 pdf or jpeg would get expanded out. where as on the Cameo software it work just fine. The Cricut was given to me as a present, so I am trying to make it work. I have found other methods online as well, but they fail as well. There is another program called Sure cuts a lot that works with all cutters. I have not decided to buy it is a reviews are a mix of it works or does not.

For the longest time the Cricut was not a cutfile-friendly tech. Glad to hear that's changing.
If there ends up being a full-featured cross-cutter-provider tool and file format, that'd be good to know - and perhaps, someday, we might start using that instead.
We'll see if it's like imgage, video, text, and other formats - the good of all tools outweighs proprietary "lock in".
None of us get any money on the sale of any cutter brand, so a full-featured format would be great.
Hoping for that day...

Thank you! Next cutfile set I start making, I will start with an svg and see if that workflow doesn't make me sad. If it works ok, I can make SVG and studio3 files available.

I'm totally up for figuring out how to get more people cutting! Here's a pointer to an SVG and a DXF file - whichever might be more convenient for you. This goes to chiefasaur 's free Gazer mini he released on Twitter. SVG: www.dropbox.com/s/ixjw8b28it1cetk/GazerPDF.svg?dl=0DXF: www.dropbox.com/s/uwlahd720juz57u/GazerPDF.dxf?dl=0I can probably get used to making these files and using them to make studio3 files from them, but they're WAY more complicated than if I did them by hand in Silhouette Studio (that is, there's a LOT of extra points). Red lines are cutlines. Blue lines are score lines. I assume you know how to get graphics into the Cricut software and how to align things. You probably need to scale the svg to the right size... Group all the lines and they should scale together nicely. Please let me know if this kind of thing is helpful!

P.S. If y'all aren't following folks like Trash Mob Minis, Okumarts, Dungeon Designer Kev, Marshall Short, or any of the other great mini makers on Twitter, you're missing out. I try to post lots of pics of the minis I do cutfiles for, so you can follow me (Paper Realms) if you are so inclined.

I watched this video again www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ch23OY8z5Fo and see that the Cricut does have some form of registration marks, though the cutting area is terribly small. Skip ahead to the 5:00 mark, and you can see a couple things: 1) The Brother scan-n-cut doesn't do registration marks... 2) The Cricut DOES have registration marks, but the image it's cutting looks like it's less than 2/3 the size of what the Cameo is cutting... 3) Does the Brother scan-n-cut require you to TAPE DOWN the printed page to their carrier sheet? That's... odd... I have no idea how accurate the review is, or how up-to-date it is. If the Cricut cutting area really is that small, that's terrible. It'll be a huge waste of paper, and everything you cut will require reformatting so that anything can fit. According to that review, printing from their software is also going to reduce the quality of the image? I don't know what that's about. Sounds crazy. Oh, and the scan-n-cut results from the Brother cutter was *terrible*. If anyone tracks down up-to-date videos that show off these features, please share them! Considering you can get a Portrait for about $150, I still think that's the best entry into the market, and a Cameo package goes for about $250.

The print and cut area is that small. There is a way to make it just a cut file, but I have not figured out how to do that on any image I have tried to upload. I would not buy a Cricut. The design space program is difficult to use and I have found it not to be user friendly. The Silhouette on the other had I have been able to upload a png image of a Roman seas ship and have a cut file done in 10 mins.

Scale a bit I guess It made the image 145 by 166 Inches. It took 10 minutes for it to import it and it is not that complicated of a image. I would not go to the effort to convert things to svg. I am finding that unless you are drawing the designs yourself or using theirs you buy. It is totally useless for what we do or buy.

Thanks for the information! I've had one (maybe two) inquiries about other devices, and it's nice to be able to speak to some of the pros and cons of the machines. I appreciate you looking into it.
