The theme for this month's HOARD is PlaSeBuilMo (Playset Building Month) This can be any sort of miniature figure or model on the above theme or feel free to submit miniatures off theme. If you submit a figure, they must include both front and rear art, have a proper trimming outline, and include instructions for multi-part models. Recolors and figure mods are encouraged, and even uncolored designs are welcome. No nudity or sexuality, but bloody gory and horrifying is encouraged. If you have questions about how to design your entries, like formats, resolution, and stuff like that, see the HOARD GUIDELINES in this forum category. Entries for the Hoard will be accepted until the last day of April, 2019.

I know this is almost a whole month off, but we didn't really flesh out how it would work, so I wanted to start the thread so that we can discuss how it will proceed

I think, a playset should consist of some minis and some kind of scenery or vehicle. Like a set you can take out of a box, and have fun and play with, quite like Lego or something along that line: open the box, take out the parts, build, have fun!

That makes sense.
So, my hearse and haunted house would have been a good start to a playset, but needs some minis to go with it.
My old Jurassic Park set would be a set, since it has dinos, trees and vehicles
The circus from February would be a set, but would be better with some people.
I think that makes sense.

One question would be, whether the minis may be mods of existing minis. Since I can't draw figures, no matter how much I'd like to, I would not be able to create a playset, if I can't use mods. However, if I'm allowed to use mods, my Cadet Cruise set would be a playset, since it includes 4 minis and a shuttle. All my Trek rooms would be sets, as long as minis were included, just like my Luna Base (Space:1995) sets... Hmm, seems like I need to dig into my projects folder, to see what unfinished set might be hiding in there...

shep just say figures not included or figures sold separately (also mods would be cool). To me a playset is several items that go together thematically. It could be vehicles and tiles, it could be figures and terrain, or any other combination. Almost seems to me like a hoard of mini hoards. Which I enthusiastically support.

We have always allowed mods of figures in the Hoards, so I don't see a reason not to allow them here. I think posting this early is getting the desired result -- thought and discussion. I really like the phrase 'hoard of mini hoards', ignatious

As said above, I see it a little bit like a box of Legos. Those always (if not being Technic) come with some minifigs, so you can play away right out of the box (after assembly, of course)...

Out of curiosity (only because I haven't contributed to a hoard yet) does it have to be something made specifically for the hoard or can it be something released already? I'd love to add my scifi props to a hoard and the Cyber Mages for more people to enjoy who may not browse the forum as much.

This theme is more about testing ourselves. What type of play set can you put together in a month? So other than gaining ideas, to test yourself, you shouldn't do any design work until April 1.
But in the spirit of the Hoards, off-theme has always been acceptable for any Hoard. Modifications of previous work has always been accepted. I would recommend packaging them up with original and modded versions. That isn't to say that the modifications have to be big. There have even been entries that have been posted before in the forums, but added to a Hoard.
So, yes, they can be added. I'll leave it up to you on how you wish to submit them

Speaking of playsets, have any of you gone to Chick-Fil-A with a youngster recently? They currently have five sets -- bugs, forest, ocean, space and pirate ship. The figures and terrain pieces are slot-together, so they can be taken apart and stored in an ingenious folder. I haven't seen the pirate ship yet, but the others look really slick. I might have to order me a kid meal just to get the pirate ship.

Awesome, I'll have to brainstorm and see what I can come up with and start adding to the Hoards here and there. That also gives me some time for my new PC to arrive and get my programs loaded on it, that's the main thing that has been holding me back on getting more projects and ideas done lately, lol.

Since I have no car, if I start biking away, do you guys think I'll be able to make it there and back again by the weekend? I have a Star Trek Adventures session on Saturday...

I think, I'm gonna cheat a little bit and finish up two projects that are on my harddrive for some time now. I think, this is good for finally finishing the Lunar Modular Transport including various modules and some minis. The second set is going to be a generalized version of my DragonAge chantry, also including some minis. I think, I'll call it »Church of the Saviour« playset, with several exchangeable parts, so it can be used for various fantasy RPGs, including DragonAge and The Dark Eye (one variant for each of the Twelvegods). All in all, that should be as much work as a completely new design...

Well, if I do Silver Springs for my playset, I will settle on one or two buildings and some minis that could tell a story. If I were to take Support Your Local Sheriff as a model, I could do the General Store and Sheriff's Office, and have it titled, 'The New Sheriff'. I still have a while to settle on an idea that can be done in a month

If the circus is any indication, YOU can do a lot in a month.

The bulk of that was done using a format for the model. Animals in profile are relatively easy, too, like the dinos from way back when.
I want to do something with real figures again, fronts and backs

Here's the Space playset built by a boy and his dad Two astronauts with backs, space ship, rover, rock, antenna, and under the dad's hand is the base/storage folder that has the instructions on the underside. Well thought out set. I've seen the bugs set, the ocean set and the woodlands set. Kids seem to really like them and the parents can't believe these are so well thought out, and include the storage folder. I really hope to see the pirate ship set

Neat! Looks like a great set for kids. I would not run it in a game, but hey, 9 years old Shep would've loved it...

But I do think these are a good illustration of 'playset'. Something you can build quickly and play with. Some figures, terrain and a base is a well thought out playset, with storage as a bonus

For me it's already started... Major change of plans on my side: I will do a little temple, not fold-flat, but regarding certain aspects modular enough, so it can be used in various fantasy settings. The playset will include two priests/clerics that I will modify from two of okumarts various minis. If everything works according to my plans, the temple will be round with two rooms, one open with pillars and an altar, and one more or less enclosed with bed, scripts and such for the priests. The temple will be about 21 cm high and about 24 cm wide, have two steps and a dome with an oculus. The dome can be lifted to play in the interior...

"Shattered Temple of the Shadow Gate" It appears it's going to be Temple month. Here's the doodle, the model is in progress and looks better than the doodle. Once upon a time I was working with a group that had an idea for a game that worked kind of like MTG but used a combination of card decks and tabletop miniatures. The world was a giant chessboard of 6" squares and different magical/mystical/legendary/demonic sites would appear on the game-world-board and summoned monsters/heroes/armies would march across the board to claim the sites and boost the power levels and options of the player who controlled them. It was complicated and fabulous and before any real work could be done on it one faction began screaming that the idea was all theirs and they were taking it back and didn't want to work with anyone else on their fabulous idea...four years later...their fabulous idea hasn't emerged from their closet so I'll be finishing the "Shattered Temple of the Shadow Gate" -6" diameter, balcony, ruins, summoning circle, shadow gate, shadow gate guardian with mystic blade/gate-key miniature. Small project that could work as an encounter or stepping stone to a bigger adventure, or could end friendships with much shouting.
