Hey guys, i want to start to create some paper minis set to sell on Drivethru Rpg, and i want to make something different from the Fantasy Setting i usually do and will be the main minis for my patreon, so i want to make some sci fi and other settings to sell, and for sci fi i like the Starfinder setting, so i want to know if i can use their unique elements, like monster, classes and races for my minis or i can have some trouble with their copyright. I don't intend to use any unique names, only their appearances and design.
I think this question can be applied to every rpg with unique elements.
Thanks!

"copyright" normally relates to a specific work such as a text or a specific illustration so unless you are reusing artwork, it shouldn't be an issue. the other matter is "trademarks" which relate to specific names, slogans, logo design and some distinctive visual traits. This means that, for example, trying to sell your own drawing of captain picard in a starfleet uniform using the name "Star Trek's Captain Picard" would be a trademark infringement but not a necessarily a copyright violation. Your best bet then is to try to stick with character designs that might recall some setting's elements but are generic enough not to cause legal problems for you. To continue with the Star Trek example, Klingons have a very distinctive appearance so may be an issue even without using the actual name "klingons". Vulcans on the other hand are basically just pointy eared humanoids which would easily be sold under a "Stoic Aliens" moniker.

Got it, thanks man, this helps a lot, I will use the generic design to build my own "universe" of minis, let's hope the player like it.
Thanks! =)
