Hello Adventurers!
I'm an artist who from loves the RPG genre and I love making Paper miniatures. It's been a while since I had a Dnd book in my hand but I never had the chance to play it with anybody. And I'm a bit sad about it.
How exactly did I like making these things?
I'm telling a long story so its okay to stop here if you don't like long reads.
I remember seeing the 3.5e player's handbook back in 2004 in a bookstore in our city and I am fascinated by it. I really don't understand too much about it but I'm just amazed by the artworks. I was in fourth grade that time an when I asked my mom to buy it from me, I never got it. I can't say that we're really poor but just below middle class family who could buy what we needed but have to save a lot for some small luxury. I was sad but what can I do? That's life. When I was in 1st year High School (7th grade), I had a classmate who had that same exact book, I asked him what exactly it was and he says its a game. That's how I knew Dungeons and Dragons was a game. I asked him If he could teach me how to play it since I'm seeing Stat windows (character sheet) I believe it works like in Video game RPGs but he didn't. He says its too complicated even for him and his family bought it for him hoping he'd learn it himself and Its something for "kids with high intellect levels". But he did not know how to play it and he brought it to school to show it to me because he thinks I might be interested in its drawings because I'm the class artist you know.... and thank God he did show it to me! So I just borrowed it and brought it home and kept it until summer break. I show it to my brother but like me, that was his first encounter with it too. We live in the country side and Somebosy who knows about it is pretty rare. I was playing Tactics Ogre PS1 port that time and I love making paper units of it (that's what I call paper miniatures back then and I had no Idea there were actually Dnd miniatures or Paper miniatures) and now I had more fantasy reference, I tried to make some paper units from Dnd handbook's Illustration too. Good times.
Fast forward to after college. I graduated college but did not encounter anyone who played or know something DnD. My classmates? none. schoolmate and friends? some of them. They know something about it and we got to talk something about it but never got to play it... they had the same case as me. In our local hobby shop, I never stumbled somebody who played Dnd in there. Mostly they play MTG and Yu-Gi-Oh and most of them are in their mid 30's to 40's. I never had the guts to ask them. They look that They don't want to be approached by a stressed college kid. That's true. I graduated college and I found internship work. I was always playing Video Games after work and The Idea of playing DnD is slowly forgotten. Years passed and I was readying myself for my licensure examination. I stumbled across the work of Mr. Marshall Short on social media and I thought "damn... these are some the things that I used to do when I was in High School!" and thatagain how I suddenly remembered my interest in DnD. He makes paper miniatures ( that was the time I knew It was universally called paper miniatures and that's when I also learned of Patreon) and so do I. He looks dedicated and he earns making them. I wanna do that too and so I did. Set Up my patreon page and uploaded my first work and nothing. I think no one ever visited my page because I dont know how patreon works and I dont know where to show my miniatures except IG and twitter that no one seems to show interest just up until I posted some of my works on sites like here in cardboard warriors and reddit just some days ago. So I decided to just focus on my exam and thank God I passed and now I am a licensed proffessional an adult, I am still not able to experience playing it with people.... maybe just on apps when I got the time because I am busy with my clients now... Design and construction Industry is one hell of a stressful career. An Okay earning job (I'm from a 3rd world country BTW) but what you get is a haggard body. The only thing I think I can connect with people who actually play DnD now is by making these paper miniatures. That way, I can at least provide the resources they need and want. To those who visited my page recently, you might notice that there is a large time Gap on my uploads, that's because of how busy I am with my current work. But When I saw on my feed that I had a Patron, I was so happy that it gave me motivation to do more even with a tight schedule. That was a wholesome moment for me. I don't mind the haggard body as long as I'm doing what I love. And as long as I have the time, I'll make more wether you finished reading this or not nad ending in my page or not, that's okay. I'm doing what I love and think is right for me.. and I don't ask you to believe me in my story and I'm not endorsing my page either because this thread is Introduction of thyself right? I just want you to remember that These things are what makes us happy and when you have the opportunity to do it, Do it as long as you're not hurting others. And I'm doing it for the sake of my happiness. To the one who actually read this til here, Thank you for reading my story. You are an amazing person and I wish you good in your future endeavors be it in DnD campaign or in real life.
