My impression is that quite a lot of folks who've published on the OBS sites, especially those who opt for the "free" or "PWYW" pricing options, are likely the same ones that back in the day (late 1970s through to the 1990s) would once have sent their material to be published in printed fanzines. Many items are certainly comparable to what I remember seeing being sent in then (as an unpaid editor), or published in such places, at least. Much of this now features online in blogs and similar websites of course. The number of people who actually make a living out of such writing/creativity is as tiny as it was back then though; most such authors/creators may be able to supplement their main income this way, but often only in a very small way. Like jeffgeorge said early in this topic, it's better to think of any money made as a bonus, not a career option.

Oh, how I wish I had time to go into my philosophy of 'Bonus' right now. I can't help but believe that if folks looked at the good things in life as a bonus that they don't deserve, but they have been privileged to partake in, that they would lead happier lives and be a blessing to those around them.
'Bonus' has lost its luster these days. Expected, not appreciated.
I personally think that if I were to ever offer commercial pieces, the bulk (if not all) would be Pay What You Want. I really appreciate what folks do for the community
