Dunno if any of you are interested (or care for that matter), but there is this thing called aethercon that is an online gaming convention (not online like it is about online gaming, but online as in it is a virtual con for tabletop RPGs, it's all on the webs man). Sounds like a weird concept to me, mostly games through roll 20 and other online tabletop services. They also have art displays (which amounts to free desktop wallpapers) and some vendor stuff, which I am guessing is going to be discounts. I doubt there is any kind of virtual free schwag. But honestly I have no idea what it is like, I just sort of randomly found out about it on the web yesterday. Still seems like an odd concept to me, but it is the second annual, so they did it one time and decided it was worth repeating. And the price is right (totally free) Anyway its Nov. 15-17 (F-S-S). Not sure if I will be able to participate, but it is a curiosity, so I may check it out if I have time over that weekend.. www.aethercon.com/a2/

Non human anything is definitely easier for me. Even small errors in pose seem glaring to me when I am drawing people and I never am fully satisfied with the outcome (of the pose at least. Usually I am cool with the overall finished figure).
In this case I cut some corners to get the time way down. Note the bulky robe for clothes that makes drawing the torso almost unnecessary and the cloak that makes the back a snap to draw.
I'll be honest though I've been struggling a bit (internally anyway) about paper minis. This goblin with his hurriedly drawn figure and quickie coloring job looks about as good army other minis when sitting on the table at arms length. Of course this illusion is lost upon closer examination, and totally blown away when one looks at the digital images at an increased size on the screen.
Just trying to get the happy medium between detail and efficiency I guess. Though I suppose for commercially viable work you need that looks good on the screen so people buy it and the looks good on the table so they come back.

I bought a bunch of these from you back in the day and I love them. They keep the minis flat for storage, never spend time basing and stuff, the clear base blends into the scenery nicely. Best paper miniature purchase I've made ( well besides the actual minis and the tools I need to build them).
My only suggestion would be to increase the slight-ness of the curve so it grips the mini a bit more. Sometimes during gameplay when someone lifts a mini by the paper the base slips off.

Thanks for the comments!
This was sort of an experiment to see what the quality level of a mini might be if I set myself a time limit. It wasn't markers, I used GIMP (as always), but I went from a blank piece of paper to printing this mini in about 3 hours. Not a bad result considering this is a third to a quarter of the time I usually take to do a mini.

More at home in the wilds of the world than on the streets of a city, Kirooka has always had a way with animals. Hirelings might come and go, or betray an employer for a bit of coin, but her pack is loyal and fierce.

Some goblins are tougher and smarter than the others. Those are the ones that abandon the horde and seek fame and fortune on the open road.

Looks like this guy might make it into the papercut competition too... He still needs some work, but I think I can get it done over the weekend.

Thanks for the compliments everyone! As for the spear… Thanks for the feedback! I have been wondering about it a bit myself. I initially was going for more of a pole arm style weapon at first and then sort of switched gears to the spear without doing much in the way of re-scaling. I’ll have to look into sizing it down. I usually shy away from adding a wooden part, even though I have done it in the past I think it generally looks pretty good. But it messes with my preferred storage option of a photo album, which requires flat minis with no bases. Usually I just cut flimsy parts a bit wide and put my black sharpie to work to make them sturdy enough to hold up to game-play. Though in the case of the papercut awards, when I actually go to build this mini, I’ll likely go for a flimsier spear that looks good in a photo

Yes. The white wolf will be the pack leader. The albino look, along with a modest 10% size increase should do the trick.

Here is my latest work. It will be the scout ranger character with a pack of wolves for animal followers. With any luck I will be able to get this done in the next week for the paper-cut competition.

Thanks for the warm re-welcome!
It feels good to be looking around again and flipping through the sketchbook again.
I’m hoping to get something ready for the paper-cut awards; hopefully my schedule continues to cooperate.
@ Vermin King- In this case the secret to reducing stress and recapturing free time has been blind luck. I have been fortunate enough to be in a position to re-define my employment with the company I work for at the same time as having a second job offer that is looking pretty dang good at the moment. Sometime in the next month or two I’ll be back to a regular old 40 hour work week with little to no after-hours expectations. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll still have to have a day job, but it will be far less demanding than what I do now.
It’s 100% percent true about needing the creative outlet. I think I could handle the stress of my job if it still left me time to work on my projects and given me time to relax, here’s hoping the future unfolds as I have foreseen it!
@ Wyvern- glad to see you found Into the Fray. I am rather proud of it . It is true that reality had crept in, but I hope to get back to my original intentions of producing new factions and such. As soon as I get warmed up an a few smaller projects I hope to get working on new content for into the Fray. Not quite sure of a timetable yet, it’s too early to commit to something like that, but it has certainly been on my mind lately.

Hi everyone!
So I’ve been out of the loop for a long time, I bet most of the people around here hardly recognize me… not that I ever was that prominent of a figure around here… but before I get into that I’ve noticed a couple of changes.
First congratulations to squirmydad on his new position as the curator of Cardboard Heroes. I hope it goes well for you.
To nik and Sanity Studios, good luck to you as well and thanks for keeping Cardboard Warriors up and running over the last few years. I am fully sympathetic to not being able to keep the pace that you want (that’s the story of my life) and respect your decision to let the forum go. Good luck! Keep Belicose alive!
As for me, I hope this is the prelude to getting Moss Games back into the, uh game, at least a little bit. The short version of all of this is that a couple of years back I wound up with a new day job (yeah, I have a day job, unfortunately I don’t have the talent or fan base to get by on Moss Games). This job was a double edged sword, it gave me more of the sweet sweet money that I needed to stay afloat in this topsy turvy world of ours, but at the same time my free time went down drastically and my stress level went way up (way way way up, I mean like high blood pressure and a rekindling of a long dead smoking habit).
Not to complain too much, stable employment is a good thing, but the side effect was me letting Moss Games and many of my half-finished projects and ideas fade into the background for a while.
I know, everyone is like “Get on with it, no one wants to hear your life story.”
Looks like I have found a way to recapture some of my free time and reduce my stress to a level that can promote being creative again. I am committing to getting back into some game and model design. I’m not sure exactly what shape this will all take, I am in a bit of a planning phase for the next month or so while all of this stuff shakes out.
Still I wanted to drop by and say hi to my old friends and offer some thanks to those of you who picked up a product here or there, or offered some feedback on this project or that.
Hopefully I’ll see you around here once and a while.
--Sammo

I little late to the party (as usual)... but better late than never.
I haven't been posting much lately (time has been a precious commodity for me since June, challenging new job and all that), but I have been keeping up on the reading and checking in form time to time, so please don't think this is coming out of the blue.
Anyway, feel free to post my results and comments as a judge if you want to. limited as those comments might be.
As for my 2 cents on judging... it might be a good idea to remove yourself from the judging (Nik and Labrat) and keep those submissions coming! Then with voting and judging solely in 3rd party hands you could win or loose with the rest of us. It looks like at this point it will be easier to get Judges than contestants.
Having the polls be private until the end I think is a good idea in general, and would not taint judges votes. Though I turned my result in on 8/12, there were still plenty of ballots left to be cast. As for the 50/50 split, I don't think that is unwarranted, though a broader pool of judges is always better.
There are other dangers of impropriety in having things based to heavily on the public pole as well (ask Mountain Dew about the naming contest for their new green apple flavor).
As for a peoples choice award. I love the idea. I'd make that it's own poll with all of the entries combined, maybe a single prize for 1st place (perhaps with a different prize than the rest of the categories).
Lastly, though it doesn't look like anyone here is really suggesting that the contest was rigged in any way.... I'd just like to say that as a contestant, a judge and a forum member, this contest has been completely transparent. With the possible exception that the judges results are not posted until the awards are over, everything has been out in the open for everyone to see.
I plan to lend my support with prizes, entries and (if asked) judging next year as well!

Hi everyone! I know I have been away from the forum for a while (tons of stuff has been going on in real life) but I wanted to make sure to get an entry in for the 2012 PaperCut Awards. Here is the R.A.P.T.O.R. (Rapid Aerial Precision Tactical Ordinance Robot) fast attack droid. Thanks Nik for keeping the PaperCut awards going!

I’ve started work on a new project, energy sword commandos. I’m planning on a handful of highly trained warriors with a few layer options… Here is the first member of the group, with a double bladed e-sword (plans will include regular single bladed weapons and figures wielding 2 separate blades). First the energy sword… Vibroblades (or low tech swords), these need some extra work… The traditional saber… And I think I’d get complaints if I didn’t offer a red and black scheme….

Just to throw another 2 cents on the pile...
One thing I don't like about the "corridors/rooms/spacehulk" style tiles is that it doesn't really feel like the inside of a star ship. So unless the game/scenario is inside some huge station or capital ship it doesn't capture the mood so much for me.
I'd really like to see some tiles along the lines of the skeleton key games star ship tiles where is is possible to make a full ship. The sets themselves were a single ship with a few options for rearranging and some compatibility with the other tile sets. Though I felt that the modularity in those sets could have been handled a lot better , it was really cool to be able to develop a map of a frigate, transport or a shuttle to use (I have generated one on several occasions to use as the players ship and been able to have many enjoyable boarding encounters).
I might be in the minority here, but for me there are so many corridor/intersection/room tile sets available that something that has a bit more variety might appeal to me more.
That being said, I love the style you've got going. I'd really like to see a star ship done in the same style as the cargo bay tiles you made (which were really awesome, I wanted more than 3!), regardless of the format.
Of course I wasn't really thinking of the whole "derelict" part, which makes more sense to have the corridors/rooms the way that you are planning since it makes for more of the dungeon crawl in space. But if you move on to functional ships!

Thanks for the purchase(s)! and the awesome reviews.
Skyra and Tabletop Bettys were originally a set of all female paper minis I was working on. But as the set developed it didn't seem like there would be a big draw for a set that was entirely made of femme fatales that were spread across a bunch of genres. So I'll be including one in every release from Moss Games. In fact I'm finishing up some now that I will add to my other releases (thus the number 6 on Skyra). Consider it a bonus incentive "gotta collect 'em all" to buy Moss Games stuff, since I don't plan to release them anywhere else.

I wound up leaving the base at 1.5 inches by 1.5 inches. It is a bit of an odd size, but a one inch base made the model too tipsy and the 2 inch base just looked too big.
The 1.5 inch base does fit very well into 2x2 one inch squares though, if you are playing on a grid ti works great.

Now available at RPGNow the RAPTOR!The R.A.P.T.O.R. (Rapid Aerial Precision Tactical Ordinance Robot) is a fast attack assault droid. Capable of travelling at supersonic speeds to reach the target in record time the R.A.P.T.O.R. carries the necessary armament to easily dispatch its foes. This product contains the necessary PDFs to print and build your own army of R.A.P.T.O.R. attack droid paper models. The R.A.P.T.O.R. can be printed on a single page and using some common tools (a hobby knife, straight edge and glue) it can be transformed into a 3D gaming model. Included is a layered PDF that offers 10 complete color schemes and 2 plain white schemes. The R.A.P.T.O.R. comes with several weapon options for further customization. Also included are .studio cut-files, complete instructions and a .xcf file so you can create any color combination you desire.

So this should be released later tonight. The final price will be $2.00 a piece (many people have told me it is under-priced, but I still want it to be affordable for all). Sorry for the price bump (I should learn not to announce pricing until I am sure, or start high, it is much easier to take a discount than an increase).
I wasn't sure if I was going to make it (we've gotten 2 feet of snow in the last 24 hours, which makes my job way more difficult).
As for the crawler legs, thanks for the heads up. I am noticing even now with my test build that the legs are getting wonky, and I have had the same issue with the chiccarra (I have 6 or so of them for my Dune campaign and I have had varying degrees of landing gear failure).
My current plan is to make the legs have a "T" and an "I" shaped cross section. It will make the build more complex, but also significantly more durable.

Thanks again for all the support!! The PDF is ready. The final version has 10 color choices, plus a plain white (with shading and the bits colored) and a plain "wire-frame" version, that's 12 choices. Plus I believe I am going to include the layered .xcf file so you could literally make any color that you want. The base also has a few options, whether you want to print the sides in black or in ink saving white. Also there is another wire-frame option for the bases in case any of you want to mess around with transparencies for the bases. I'm working on the cut-files now, then i need to get some instructions made up and I am working on a new bonus feature for Moss Games products. If all goes well I expect to see this released on Monday night, but we'll see how the rest of the weekend plays out. I'm thinking $1.50 $2.00 for the model. Does that sound okay for everyone? I'm also still working one the name, my two choices are The Shuriken, aerial fast attack droid, or the R.A.P.T.O.R. (Rapid Aerial Precision Tactical Ordinance Robot). I'm also taking suggestions for the name, so post those here, if I use your suggestion I'll give you a free copy of the model once it's released. Finally, it looks like the droid army is continuing to grow. Here is a wip for the second addition, an attack droid that is a six legged crawler....

Thanks for the interest everyone. Added details and a quick color scheme (hoping to have several color schemes in the final product) and did a second test build, I think it's coming along rather nicely. This one has the prototype of the 3D gun (just for you vermin king), though the gun itself needs bit of work to look right (planning on making it a bit wider.

the flight base is currently 1.5 in square. Though I may mess with the scaling a bit as it gets closer to completion. I'm definitely going with six weapon options.. mini-gun, plasma rifle, crystal death ray cannon, arc cutter, sensor/electronic warfare package, and blaster cannon. The blaster cannon I am working on a 3D version (a narrow box with rolled tubes for barrels.

Here is the prototype build for a flying jet attack droid... It clearly needs details, textures and a better color scheme. I also plan to work up a few different kinds of armament for the front (I don't like the current gun).
