I have just started making up a batch of mesper / Permes' Ancient Warriors Set 2 - Persians. I have started with the archers. I don't really follow any strict basing rules, as I only play solo, but I was wondering if anyone else does. This came to mind, because while I reading up how Persian archers were organised, I also did a few searches to see how people base them for wargaming. The funny thing is, that from what I read, it seems you had the spear guy with a big shield in front of nine archers: Source: www.wikiwand.com/en/SparabaraBut, I never found anything similar searching for based wargame figures. Because I have started using 24 mm square bases, I decided to put two figures per base and then just arrange them in rows and count the whole lot as a unit Though, if I do more "historical" type figures and even battles, I may switch to 40 mm frontage. What do other forum denizens do?

I have seen a number of 15mm mass battles games that use 40mm as the base size. When I group up 28mm figures I like to put them on 50mm square bases. I don't remember what HOTT uses, I think it's 40mm. One of the things I liked about Mantic's Kings of War game is that the unit base size, which relies on big blocks, is more important than the number of figures on the base. Some of their KOW units are staged like mini-dioramas. You don't remove figures as casualties, you just put a die on the unit base to show damage levels. I always left out the two figures that would fill the back rank in my movement trays and put damage dice there instead.

I've decided to go for the 40 mm base front. Not because I meet some DBA rules Nazi, but looking at web searches, it sort of suits the figure size, even for paper minis.
I use damage dice, I have these dinky little 6 mm ones, which fit nicely on the bases of individual 25/28 mm figures, so they'll fit on 40 x 15 mm trays.

I don't do regiment base battles, but I'm in the process of switching my minis to 15 mm, so I have less to transport for games at conventions. I use 1 x 1 cm foamcore squares diagonally slitted for bases. I imagine that foamcore strips based on a 1 x 1 cm per mini pattern would work very well as regiment bases...

I re-based my archers onto 40 mm wide bases and they do look much better: For Chronicles of Blood, because human archers are not listed in the basic rules, I will use the same Battle Stats as Men-at-arms, but drop the armour from 2 to 0, but add Archery (60 cm) to Special. My plan now, is to have one base of figures per Wound point and to remove a base when the unit receives a hit.
