The theme for this month's HOARD is Renaissance Warmachines in Venice This can be any sort of miniature figure or model on the above theme or feel free to submit miniatures off theme. If you submit a figure, they must include both front and rear art, have a proper trimming outline, and include instructions for multi-part models. Recolors and figure mods are encouraged, and even uncolored designs are welcome. No nudity or sexuality, but bloody gory and horrifying is encouraged. If you have questions about how to design your entries, like formats, resolution, and stuff like that, see the HOARD GUIDELINES in this forum category. Entries for the Hoard will be accepted until the last day of April, 2020. I had a problem with this last night. As we should all know, Venice has been very hard hit with Covid-19, and my little prologue for this rang too close to the terror they must be experiencing. So, I decided I needed to rework it, only everything I come up with still brings me to the reality of what is going on there now. Piazzas empty except for the diabolic machines, attempts to shelter in the chiesas, only to be turned away. The once busy canals vacant because they are death traps. I had hoped that a fresh start would help in this, but it really hasn't. I think we are all familiar with the warmachines designed by Leonardo, but he wasn't the only one. He just took better notes. These artists were also architects (think Michelangelo and the Vatican) and engineers. But they generally had this extra training to go along with their art training. If you haven't been to Tivoli, the engineering of the fountains is amazing. After the fall of Constantinople ( a very interesting read from an engineering standpoint ), Venice took a pre-eminent position in Mediterranean trade, art and engineering. This is before Nationalism. All the other states were envious and hired artists and engineers to design machines to give them an upper hand in taking Venice out of the equation. As the machines ravage the city, the Doge petitions the Senate and Great Council to hire their own Ingegnere. The Arsenal served a dual purpose - Continue building the navy, but churn out their own deathmachines as fast as they can. And the war was on

What if the tank Da Vinci designed was just a prototype base for a much larger weapon system? Maybe the giant siege crossbow was intended to fit on top of the tank? Maybe it was going to be a mobile catapult for launching his flyer designs? Maybe his next step would have been to stick legs and arms on it to make a wooden steam-powered mecha?

I have an idea for a treadmill-powered mecha... But first I'll need to get The Jungle cyberbar off the drawing board. Oh, and I think scaling to 15 mm will be a very wise decision for this hoard...

15mm would make it more manageable for the Rialto Bridge. But since I already have some of the 28mm worked out, I will probably continue with the 28mm, then reduce it to 15mm and adjust things for different part breaks. For the 28mm, I pretty much decided I would have to have each side of the bridge as four parts. At 15mm, it could be three which gives me better options for breaking up the sides

Also, you can basically just put 4 pages onto 1 page, when scaling down...

Except that would make things more difficult to build than modifying the 15mm version

'Feel free to submit miniatures off theme' has always been the rule here. Since Archimedes was before this period and may have studied the use of steam. Go for it

I plan to do some "Da Vincipunk" but I have to figure out how to DM online first.

I plan to do some "Da Vincipunk" but I have to figure out how to DM online first. In my regular RPG group, we switched to Discord. Our GM included a dice-rolling bot called Sidekick into the channel, so we can simply talk through our adventure and roll dice via the bot...

I have watched a lot of Roll20 tutorials, but they concentrate on 5e and we play 3.5. If I don't find a way up upload monsters I will have to track stuff on scrap paper like I do in real life.

So, three ideas are rotating in my head right now: ( 1 ) A Warwalker A siege mecha powered by a treadmill in its center. In style not unlike a Warhammer 40k Cybot, but larger with a "cockpit" as head (where you can put a 15 mm scale mini), a huge ball on a chain for one arm, and do you remember the Daedalus-Attack from good old Robotech? That'd be the other arm. Perhaps, I'll also include a cannon in each shoulder. And, of course, all armor will be wooden, since metal would be too heavy and too expensive... ( 2 ) An Airborne Scout Leonardo's flying machine is one of his most known contraptions. I'm thinking about a simple 2.5D design with reinforced nose and tail, and some kind of catapult (more like a ballista) with rubberband hitech, so you can shoot your scout over the battlefield... ( 3 ) An Airraid Bomber I know that Leonardo never experimented with hot-air balloons, but imagine a balloon with Leonaro's helicopter inside. This contraption could glide over the enemy line, wreaking havoc with dropped grenades, and should the balloon get destroyed, nonetheless make a (more or less) save landing... I will for sure do the mecha, but should there be enough time left, I might also do projects 2 and 3. That is, unless someone of you would like to steal one of those?!?? And for a little bit of inspiration...

Since there is some danger of duplicating ideas, I will share mine. I was planning to do a mecha walker, but I think I have a bette idea. I plan to apply DaVinci's Aerial Screw to the Albatros model I didn't finish a few hoards ago. If I get it working it will be easier to get the film version of the Albatros ready for some other time. Maybe the Procrastinator's Hoard, though it is cheating to plan something for that one.

I don't think that duplicating is a bad thing. Different angles on the same idea is fine. There have to be different sides in any conflict. I had originally thought that I would have plenty of time on the bridge and would do something like the Trojan Horse as a mech, since there were few or no horses in Venice (except the bronze ones from Constantinople). If there is time I might do something like this, only with a Renaissance feel

Well, we still have a few more days... shep, do you have a photo of the gondola build? Actually, moving things around, my flame throwers fit on it, so I will do the build

Okay, so, yeah, my entry will not be done. I got very distracted by some gaming projects. Star Fleet Zombies will be submitted in, what, July? Whenever our next sci-fi theme is.

Actually, moving things around, my flame throwers fit on it, so I will do the build So far, I could not build it, since the copy shop around the corner will re-open this coming Monday. Sorry! And there'll be no Warwalker, since the flood of work continues. It's always the same with this one magazine: They have 3 months to write their texts and send them to me for correcting, but they do it all in the last 2 weeks before the deadline...

I'm still grinding through the 7 variants, 3 are done, 2 more will be done today, the extra time should allow me to finish the other 2, all in both 30mm and 15mm scale.

I wish I could show the flamethrowers on the horse, but I emailed my photos to my computer twice and they still have not appeared
I guess I might as well go back to gondola cutting

Download: bit.ly/34WlDsaHere are some build photos and a photo of the finished build I really wish I had cobbled together a gondolier figure or stolen one. When you build this, pre-shaping the parts and dry-fitting are very important. On the parts that have an opposite side, shape the thick part before gluing on the opposite side part. I have a few wrinkles that I could have avoided

The city is closed! We have reached maximum capacity for war-machines inside the walls and no more will be allowed to enter! ... I'm working on presentation photos and making sure I have everything in the download files. Unfortunately I'm not going to be near my computer much for a few days due to work assignments so getting everything up online will probably be on Thursday. Thanks for the new toys folks.
