The Ares games could be a bit hit and miss; not always enough playtesting and/or proof-reading (a similar problem applied to many of the magazine-published boardgames of the time). However, there was some very inventive stuff among them, also like a lot of the other magazine and mini boardgames being published around then (late 1970s to mid 1980s). I still have all those I found at the time... For anyone interested in pursuing the make-your-own-version now, I'd recommend checking whatever BoardGameGeek has on each specific game, as you may find better counter and map images, updated counter sheets, access to errata, etc., etc. there. For example, Barbarian Kings is here.
