A warm hello to all my fellow Cardboard Warriors! I hope you're staying healthy (and sane) during these weird times. I'm back yet again for another whack at some paper minis. Its been a while since I've posted anything new, but I've been working here and there behind the scenes. I must say I've been inspired by the other Cardboard warriors' great work over on the small scale board. I've been writing some rules as well as working on the background + concept art for a tabletop wargame project. Here are the beginnings of some goblin spearmen for said project. I'm planning on producing them at 18mm or 15mm with the option for 28mm as well. I'm going with flats this time. The idea is to be able to cut out an entire rank (probably 4 men) as one mini, similar to some of Peter Dennis' great Paperboys. Any comments + criticism welcome! Great to be back on here.

Just a quick update on these guys. I think I'm set on painting these minis up traditionally (watercolor + gouache). Here are the results of my first test run. I see potential, but the real test will be seeing them all together and at scale. This guys was painted at 3x final scale (about 6cm from foot to eye). I do plan on reducing it even further to make some small scale (18-15mm) versions as well. I think next time I'm going to leave out the outline and just add in a dark silhouette in photoshop. The outlining here feels a little heavy handed to me.

I can see why you would think so when enlarged, but looking at the preview image, which is approximately the size it will print at, it doesn't seem overpowering at all

Thanks Antohammer haha you really like your battles eh? It will be some time before I have enough ready for that. It will happen! I took another stab at painting on of these guys up this morning. Painting them this way definitely takes longer than working digitally. I'm having my doubts about the watercolor + gouache approach.

Antohammer I appreciate the input! I decided to go with digital in the end. I found some old orc test models I made for 15mm, and used them as a reference. I like how its turning out. Added bonus: this process is relatively quick!

Thanks Antohammer ! I'm not set on the 'no lines' look yet. Still having fun trying things out. I'll have to print a bunch out at scale and see how they look in person before making a final decision. I'm hoping to make some small scale armies to play some games with in the future. I find I end up getting way too picky with the inking process. It ends up taking much more time than it should!

'More time than it should' could be the title of my biography
My question to you is your enjoyment. Do you enjoy doing watercolor? More time-consuming than digital, but which do you enjoy most?
Both seem to be good figures to me, but each method has positives. I really wish you had done the water-color figure digitally to better judge, but I took the two figures and scaled them to the same height, horns to bottoms of the feet and overlaid them, then reduced opacity on the top layer to see how it would look with both. I really liked the look at 30% opacity. Of course there were things that did not line up, but the effect was really good. I'm not suggesting doing this on a regular basis, but I think that if you had a line art file, possibly with shading, and did watercolors separately, you could have a wonderful effect
But only if you enjoy watercolors more than digital

Vermin King Thanks again for the great feedback! I'm happy to hear you're feeling better. I tend to jump around a lot when it comes to creative projects/approaches. Its something I'm working on. I think when it comes to paper minis, I enjoy having them done! haha on the table i mean. I do enjoy watercolors + gouache, but I think I scratch that itch with my other projects. The goal is to be able to field a small scale army of my paper minis. For that I need a good look, that doesn't take MUCH longer to achieve than it should. Small scale probably means I need to keep it simple too. I tried what you suggested with the overlay in PS. I think what I got from it was a nice texture. I will continue to experiment. I think the lineart may be necessary, especially if I want to tie it all together with the black outline/bg.

Even if it (the line art) has less opacity, I think it will add to the attractiveness of the minis

Here's a thought: once upon a time when I was a professional miniatures painter, my mentor told me that, more important than exact color matches, was contrast. The smaller the subject, the greater the contrast needed to be. Now, in our little hobby, the subject if this discussion is about an inch tall. Details and colors are easily lost without contrast. And bkack lines help add contrast.

mesper nice! That knight has a nice 'storybook' feel to it. So in keeping with the theme of 'taking longer than it should' I've scrapped my previous designs for these goblins, and have gone with a much more traditional gobbly bunch of fellows. I also decided to go back to my old process of lineart over a rough sketch. I've attached a shot of my progress so far. Don't mind their nudity; they will be (mostly) armed and armored before being sent off to battle.

I like the Romanesque shield. I have been toying with the idea of using the Romans as a style theme for something, but not sure what, yet - most fantasy stuff seems to be European dark age and medieval or ancient Egyptian. Millions of years ago, when I was young, there was a comic, I not sure if it was an actual Doctor Who comic, or another one with a Doctor Who story in, but anyway, one story was set in a world with orc-like creatures in an Imperial Roman setting (armour, shields, clothing, architecture and so on...), and ruled by two Pterodactyl-like "gods", Gog and Maygog. The Roman-orcs were subduing humans, using them as slaves and sacrifices/food for the two gods.

cowboyleland mesper thanks! The big schnozes are probably borrowed from Paul Bonner, one of my favorite artists. alloydog thats an interesting angle. I imagine they'd have to be a cut above your average orc to get to that level of tech/culture. I was going for a more Celtic look with that particular design. I've been struggling to find an original angle for orcs/goblins (and many other fantasy tropes). With these latest drawings I've just decided to lean into the cliches (big shnozes, cruel grins, bent bodies). I'm hoping to achieve a fresh look for their gear while staying true to that classic goblin flavor.

Celtic (not Scottish) orcs and goblins are long overdue in the fantasy genre...
