The theme for this month's HOARD is Weird World War-Dieselpunk This can be any sort of miniature figure or model on the above theme or feel free to submit miniatures off theme. If you submit a figure, they must include both front and rear art, have a proper trimming outline, and include instructions for multi-part models. Recolors and figure mods are encouraged, and even uncolored designs are welcome. No nudity or sexuality, but bloody gory and horrifying is encouraged. If you have questions about how to design your entries, like formats, resolution, and stuff like that, see the HOARD GUIDELINES in this forum category. Entries for the Hoard will be accepted until the last day of May, 2020. Massive thundering hulks of metal rampaging cities, ripping through forests and rolling across wintry plains. 'Storm a'coming. Look at that dark cloud' 'It's a storm, but it isn't natural. I think that is smoke. And there's another cloud coming from over there' 'Run for cover. We certainly don't want to be caught in the middle when the two storms meet' Loud, clunky, drippy machines that you can hear coming from miles away. And don't forget the rivets. Have fun folks

For this one, I'm out of the game... No idea whatsoever, and RL keeps flooding me with work...

In the vein of 1947 Dieselpunk; A walking tank duel, Sherman vs. Tiger...although really you'd want to print up three Shermans to make it a fair fight. Only in 15mm scale this time, too tiring trying to do both 30mm and 15mm versions -

Between Hobart's Funnies and a lot of stuff the Germans came up with, I think real-life pretty much had it covered.
To be brutally honest, in my opinion, if WWII was to drag on, I don't belive things like stompies/walkers would be on the menu and that Diesel Punk isn't necessarily the way to go. I think further development would be along the lines of more high-tech stuff, like jet or even nuclear engines. As the casualties grew, men would probably get better protection and better weapons.
Maybe things like, due to brutal treatment at the hands of the Soviet High Command, the people had had enough and there was a second Russian revolution which caused to push west to falter. This allowed the Germans to hold their borders. Still limited by lack of resoruces and manpower, we could see the Germans coming up with even more ingenious designs.
With the war in the west dragging on, the US push across the Pacific isn't as fast. They still drop the atomic bombs, but with outposts still dotted around Asia, the Japanese don't surrender. The US invasion of the Japanese home islands commences. The Japanese come up with high-tech solutions flavoured with samurai styling.
With the Germans more intent on holding their lines, and the US diverting resources to the Pacific, the British and now relieved French take up the slack. Again, after the attrition of five years of war, resources are limited, but both nations are renouned for thier invetiveness.
Towards the end of the war, thinks like remote-controlled weapons systems and shealth were being developed. Generally, development like these ten to slow with wars ending, but if it continues, then things can speed up.
I think high-tech, high-spec could be the theme... maybe?

Well, walkers and mecha is the thing you usually get with the theme, when you look at the established games like DUST and such.
I, personally, think that the direction of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (was that the title of the movie?) would be the more adequate development of things would WW2 have dragged on into the late 1940's. Nazi-Germany would have had flying wings from the Horten brothers, with the Ho-229 being the first stealth jetfighter, and their several times as large bomber with 8 to 10 turbines carrying nuclear bombs over the Atlantic.
Thank God, we lost the war before things like that happened...

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow Yes, that's it.

And another different direction; I once wrote a short story called "Gift of the Fat Man" where the atomic bombs are dropped on Japan and many people gain super powers and invade America. So WW2 Japanese atomic-superheroes could go here too. Nazi Zombies is also heavily associated with this theme. Maybe a nice flying saucer or that "Die Glocke" they were working on.

...that "Die Glocke" they were working on. That was actually the first thing that came into my mind. We're talking monster tanks, super sonic fighters and weird 'n' wacky sciency stuff!

Fun movies! I love those attack saucers, and the space battles are even more dynamic than Star Wreck's.

Die Glocke papercraftLots of ads to tiptoe past to the download, pdf requires a password, model looks fine, texturing is 'meh. Might be a good project for someone. Die Glocke is a myth, just like the Hanebu UFO and the secret Antarctic base Neuschwabenland (with the entrance to the Inner Earth). However, isn't it interesting how people must have feared the Nazis that they didn't put such technology past them? For our Dieselpunk-Hoard, such contraptions are, of course, wonderful. I remember to have had a PC game in the 90's (it came with a computer magazine) that was called "Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe". It was basically a flight simulator/dog fight game, but you were flying German WW2 aircraft that were a marvel at that time, and even plane that were not yet existing (like for example the Ho-229). I also remember that I once flipped through a book with strange Nazi inventions, that were either planned or already being built when the war ended, like a mobile sea ramp for the V2 rocket (basically a ship that could be sunk and flipped by 90°, so it would float upright in the water. Then the bow would open and the V2 could start...). Too bad, I cannot remember the title of the book...

I know Die Glocke is a myth, but the Nazi super-science mythology is great fodder for sci-fi. I also picked up that PC magazine and played "Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe", I'm a terrible pilot.

Is it redundant to turn a Nazi into a vampire? Any advice about how to make the colours of his uniform look less washed out? Looking at you Vermin King, since you restore so much vintage stuff.

If you are using Photoshop, simply add a color layer in a dark blue, brown, green, or gray. Restrict the layer to the isolated figure. Set the layer to Multiply (or another mode of that group, Overlay might also give a good result, test which works best), and mask all areas that are not supposed to be colored (head, hands, red thingy on the arm, etc.)...

Overlay and adjust opacity is how I would approach it. I assume you tried unsharp mask and the color tools already.

Is it redundant to turn a Nazi into a vampire? "If you were a Nazi after the war, and if you were a vampire, and if you were a Nazi vampire, no way I was out of there."

I now need to dig "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" out of my [extensive] collection and rewatch it - it was the first time I really "got into" Angeline Jolie...
