The theme for this month's HOARD is Fantasy Pets and Familiars This can be any sort of miniature figure or model on the above theme or feel free to submit miniatures off theme. If you submit a figure, they must include both front and rear art, have a proper trimming outline, and include instructions for multi-part models. Recolors and figure mods are encouraged, and even uncolored designs are welcome. No nudity or sexuality, but bloody gory and horrifying is encouraged. If you have questions about how to design your entries, like formats, resolution, and stuff like that, see the HOARD GUIDELINES in this forum category. Entries for the Hoard will be accepted until the last day of June, 2020. Hopefully I will be a bit more creative this time around. With all the magic users, there is a definite lack in having familiars in paper, and frankly, there is a lack in pets, or even utility animals. Now is the time to fix this inequality!Back when I did Hagrid's Hut, there were a couple comments about 'needing to steal the owl'. So, I intend to do a couple owls, and maybe a dog or cat. Maybe I can finish up a couple of the horses I started. What would you like to see in this Hoard? I am sure the list of familiars has evolved since 1980, so I need to have a better idea of what is needed (other than dogs, cats and owls). Oo, a falcon would be cool... The creators at this forum tend towards figures more than models, so this Hoard could be a place for them to shine

Would it be horrible if I re-submitted some standees from 2016? Especially if they were sci-fi themed? Glimmerstar in SPAAAAACE was one my first submissions, and still looks good.
I have a few other ideas I am thinking of. No promises, I am dealing with some health issues.

If they have not been submitted to a previous Hoard.
Dang, I wish we could all get healthy. Get better soon

There's a complete list of the current (5e) D&D familiars on The Homebrewery here, which covers everything up to the additions in Volo's Guide to Monsters. If you don't want to wade through all the stats and descriptions, the basic list is: bat, cat, crab, frog (toad), hawk, lizard, octopus, owl, poisonous snake, fish (quipper), rat, raven, sea horse, spider, weasel, almiraj, flying monkey, tressym, imp, pseudodragon, quasit, sprite, cranium rat, gazer, crawling claw. If you have problems with the Homebrewery link, there's an alternative on the GM Binder site. You can find that link, and the full discussion regarding the list (which has links to a couple of the "say what?!" creatures in the latter part of the list - or just do a search for the names) on this Reddit topic. There are of course other possibilities, like the homunculus, not quite a pet, not quite a familiar...

Do the flying monkeys have to have the bell-boy caps? Or is that an organ-grinder monkey hat?

Why is it always the flying monkeys everyone picks up on (see also the Reddit topic I linked-to previously)? In fact that cap is neither a bell-boy's nor an organ grinder's. Its the (singular) magical Golden Cap. Whoever wears it and utters its charm correctly can command the Winged Monkeys in Oz, effectively making them temporarily the Cap-wearer's slaves. So in the stories, most of the winged monkeys don't wear anything at all, unlike the 1939 movie. For more details, see this page of the Oz Wiki.

But Dorothy is wearing the Golden Cap. What is the monkey wearing?

I really like this homonculi from a Sinbad movie, Golden Voyage?

I don't know how many of you remember my pteradon from Zoe's Jurassic Christmas, but I thought I would do the owl and hawk similarly. I want to do the owl similarly to this pose For the hawk, I'm thinking of actually basing it off the photos of my Canon peregrin falcon build

But Dorothy is wearing the Golden Cap. What is the monkey wearing? No, no. Dorothy's just wearing a hat. The monkey's wearing the Golden Cap. The Cap seems always to have a flat top in the illustrations. I really like this homonculi from a Sinbad movie, Golden Voyage? Yep, that's Golden Voyage. I found this resin model after a quick search online, based on the movie version: If anyone's thinking of using it as the base for a paper mini, it came from this webpage, and the reason I'd recommend this especially is because there are back and side views of the model there too (though sadly the back view wouldn't allow a simple copy & paste photo image version with this front one).

Actually, the bearer of the cap controls the monkeys. Dorothy wearing the cap gets to tell the monkeys to transport Dorothy and company. I think the monkey's cap is to show that he is the captain/leader

Yeah, it's confusing, as the winged monkeys do end up with the cap, but then Dorothy had it earlier as well, as did various of the Witches. If you scroll down that Oz Wiki page, there's a summary of what happened and when regarding it under the "Wonderful Wizard of Oz 1900" section. I think the illustration I showed may be where Dorothy & co are being taken back to Emerald City after killing the Wicked Witch of the West, so yes, Dorothy would have been wearing it then, to command the monkeys to carry them all.

Anyone got any ideas here? It got awfully quiet I'll cheat a bit: As neither a Fantasy Pet nor Familiar, rather, a mascot, I'll repost Stalin, the ship's cat of the Soviet Research Vessell Lev Davidovich Landau:

Wonderdogs (like Lassie) is a good idea. Honestly I am hesitant to tackle a small or tiny figure at 28-30mm.
I think the ultimate fantasy pet is a unicorn or a dragon and we already have a fair few of those.
Oliphant? At least it wouldn't be too small.

I realise that some things I made a few years ago for a Rise of the Runelords campaign would be good for this Hoard. The colourful fellow at the bottom is a giant gecko. Specifically this is "Stickfoot" the mount of the goblin cheif "Ripnugget." In the middle is what goblins call a "goblin dog" even though it is really a large rodent that the goblins ride and Runelord goblins hate dogs. We took to calling them "ride-rats." At the top is a "fire pelt." It uses the stats of a leopard and "Tangletooth" is the animal companion of a goblin druid named "Gogmurt." I think the fire pelt could use some work and it is the only model I can't find. I will take some pictures of the other two in the next few days.

I need to get to work on this Hoard, but I have to modify my masts on the boat now. They build nice and look good, but not for this boat

I'm afraid it might clatter a bit going through a dungeon, and might have issues getting through doors EDIT -- Since Lassie was portrayed by a male dog, I present Laddie

It probably isn't surprising that peacocks aren't common familiars or pets www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWTABEOFYoYI still can't believe the lady trying to bring her peacock onto a plane as a 'therapy animal'. Peacocks would drive you to require therapy

So turns out I will be at my cottage for a couple of days so this is the last chance I have to post some build pics. I tried to work on the fire pelt but It is just too small to look good. That is probably why I couldn't find the original. Looked like crap so I decided not to keep it. The other hang up is that I am not much of a photographer, but if these shots aren't useable rest assured I did the best I know how.

Took a quick look at the owls, wondering if I could knock it out today, but I don't think so.
Any other submissions before we close this out?

I actually just printed Laddie, so that I can have a build photo
