The theme for this month's HOARD is Hard Vacuum / Deep Space This can be any sort of miniature figure or model on the above theme or feel free to submit miniatures off theme. If you submit a figure, they must include both front and rear art, have a proper trimming outline, and include instructions for multi-part models. Recolors and figure mods are encouraged, and even uncolored designs are welcome. No nudity or sexuality, but bloody gory and horrifying is encouraged. If you have questions about how to design your entries, like formats, resolution, and stuff like that, see the HOARD GUIDELINES in this forum category. Entries for the Hoard will be accepted until the last day of July, 2020. When you are out back of beyond, and the mission has a hitch, you can't call AAA. It's on you to get yourself out of it. When this came up, the first thing I thought of was Alien. You are out there beyond help and it is you and your crew trying to do whatever you can do to survive. Have fun!

At another forum, a member was frustrated with a design he was working on and talking about not even trying any more.
I told him that every designer I know has about 1/2 to 2/3 of his catalog being incomplete.
In a way, it is nice to have a stockpile of things partially done

Another opportunity to perhaps finally finish my Eagle-ish space transporter for the Luna Base: 1995 series... hmmm...

Going to be running behind all month, but I think I might do a NASA version of my dune buggy

A challenge has been issued. I am not going to clutter up the Hoard topic with pictures of plastic models, but let's see some different Bugs, mkay?

I had a change of heart on doing a NASA repaint of my rock buggies. I saw some interesting Mars concept art and I think I have something that will be as easy as the rock buggies, but has more of a feeling that it should be in Mass Effect 2 or something. I think I will do some preliminary work at lunch EDIT -- Here's what I've come up with so far. I originally wanted the body to look pod-like, but now I am not so sure. I am also trying to decide if I want to separate the drive armatures from the sides to keep it from looking so slab-sided.

This is a revamp of an old project (might have been faster/better to start from scratch, but I am here now.) I guess it needs armour to mount guns on? Suggestions welcome.

So I messed around with this and then realised the hard points for mounting weapons are going to be too small if they don't cover the details, so yeah, I'm going to have to redo the details.

Isn't that always the way? I'm wondering what issues I'll find with the Scout car. I went ahead and printed it tonight and hope to build it over lunch tomorrow. It's spooky when something comes together that fast. Something has got to be wrong

I think I will test build this tonight. I should say these are Armor Grid guns from Hoard 75

The white or desaturated colors give me nothing to adjust... I can change colors all day, but I am crap at actually adding color.

Ta-daa! I imported the guns from Hoard 75 and enlarged them 3x. Also used bits of the Armor Grid model to make the gun mounts.

Looks good. And I bet those gun mounts could fit on the Scout.

Thanks. Come to think of it; a sheet of guns and mounts you could stick on any vehicle might be a cool thing to have. I usually play fantasy so I'm not the guy to do it.
Part of me was tempted to look for ways to round the head and abdomen more but since good looking rounded shapes are so hard to do I don't think the cost-benefit is there.
BTW the guns and verticle parts of the mounts are tripple layer.

I was very tempted to do that very thing after seeing your photos. On the Canon animals they will usually have curved join lines to obtain a bit of curve, and I was thinking of trying it, only I need to do some more shopping before getting ready to go to the part-time job. If you don't mind, I will look at a couple of those after work tonight and see what I can come up with. I was also thinking about the spider legs. Would they benefit from a little extra strength? It isn't a very heavy beast, so double thickness should be fine, but it looks awfully close to being too spindly. I think I will need to store him on his back

The lower legs are folded 90 degrees along the orange line. They get a lot of strength that way. I suppose I should write some instructions. Feel free to mod if you like. I was about to post something called "Final Spiders" but I will hold off now because I am excited to see what you come up with. Edit, actually, maybe you want the improved gun mounts?

My take on a Bug from the novel "Starship Troopers" by Robert Heinlein. I used the Giant Redback Spider from Forum Hoard 86 by Sirrob01, reduced by 50% and recolored. I added some parts from the Tau Fire Warriors by Jim Hartman, and finally I added the visors all by myself. I will try to get an assembly done tomorrow.

Space Spider sez "Only Heinlein Bugs are real Bugs!" Tomorrow I'll take some better pics, including a comparison with Jim's movie Bugs.

While I was at work last night, I was thinking that getting much curve on the head will be more difficult than the abdomen, since it is only 3/4 of an inch across and double layered. The joins to create the curves will be very small and would probably have to be edge-glued without tabs. If the abdomen and head were smaller or omitted on the bottom layer (except at the neck and the area where the abdomen joins the thorax), one could darken the underside and have a thinner layer to coax into a curve. Shoot. Some detail modelers would delaminate that one layer of card to get it thinner and be easier to work with. I guess I am just putting thoughts down on what I've come up with so far, but it is more of a challenge than originally thought.

It is really just the legs that need to be doubled for stenghth. It could be folded like this Builder could reinforce neck and waist with off-cuts. I really should thicken the undersides to allow for a bit folding error.

But we have to allow for those players who like to turn dead things upside down, because I think there are several like that. And if you are switching out weapon mounts, or just sitting weapon mounts on there, I do think the thorax needs to be at least doubled, if not tripled. My mind keeps rolling things over, but I am putting this on a back-burner simmer. My best thinking normally doesn't happen while I am concentrating on it. When I am working on something with my hands, or on the computer (as long as it is mechanical, and not requiring much thought), I can sometimes work things out on a different project. Not really multi-tasking as much as twiddling my thumbs as I think about something.
My first idea on the head was pitched into the bin. It would have looked more ant-like than spider. Second idea depends on how much I want to retain for the underside, and then arrange it for two slits or four. On the abdomen, it is a matter of figuring out the proportions to have it rounded without being a tall narrow hump. It's the head that is the corker on this. I'm still confident that I will have something complete by the end of the day ... hopefully.

OK, I started playing around because I thought I had an easy way to respond to @coyotepunc's(?)challenge. He has since gone his own way and at this point you see to be more invested in this project than I am. Mr Vermin King, You have the conn!
