Blast it! So many of the projects I have worked on for the last couple years were either inspired by him or improved by his insight. I'm at a loss for words. * from the Docma blog post above We are going to miss you, Shep

Somehow, I think it would make him smile about his last post A tub full of wine... Hehe... No! NO!!! With the heat wave we have right now, that would most probably kill me... I'm really going to miss him At another forum, something similar happened many years ago. When we found out about his passing, I looked up his most recent posts and his last post was 'so many projects, so little time' I imagine my last post will be something like 'looks like another unfinished project taking up hard drive space' Take care of yourselves, folks.

Terrible news indeed. And so young - only 45. If anyone has contact with his family or closer colleagues in other spheres, please be sure to pass on our sincerest condolences.
I've been too distracted with other matters to comment much here for a while, but I do try to drop by most days. Just never expected to read something like this.

Damn, second 40-something colleague I've lost this week. :-P
I don't know his family, but I do know the folks here. Sucks for us too.
Shep shared often, and was a great member of our community here.

I've seen a notice about his passing in other forum, but didn't know he was Shep.
This brings much closer to home. He will be missed here, among other places. We may be continents apart but in exchanging so much of our shared interests feels the same as a friend of the offline kind passing away.

Well that's just awful. Shep/Walter was a great guy and he'll be missed.
We lost Michael Haggard (the Haggard) last month as well.

Oh my god! I can't believe it.
So much loss this year. We've lost four family members in the past year, including my sister, who passed unexpectedly at 52, so I know how his family is feeling right now, to lose him so early in life.
Shep was one of the most prolific contributors to the wealth of great content in this community, of course. But I think an even more devastating hole will be left by the absence of his spirit, the generosity, support and enthusiasm that came through in every post he made. He will be deeply missed. I honestly can't imagine this forum without him.

Does anyone here have contact with his family? Or know how to contact them? I was going through shep's old posts, and I have an unbelievable number of suggested projects I almost feel obligated to tackle. The 'there's always time to come back to this' mentality has really been proven wrong. I know he was married, and I haven't gotten to the post, but I believe he had kids, too. I just wish there was a way for us to let them know we are sorry for their loss. As much as he meant to us here, I am sure his family is going through so much more shock and grief.
