It's my first attempt at making a cavalry paper soldier stand and I would like to share my work process. The project isn't over yet and I'm still in the middle of researching the costume but what I have with the horses may be of interest to other designers. First of all, I did research on which horse poses I'd like to portray and that would look good together. After some hand drawn sketches, the chosen poses were scanned and rendered in photoshop as clean line work. Each horse is separate so I have the option of jumbling the poses around and hence prevent repetition. Then I rendered each horse in a variety of colors - from grays to roans to chestnuts. Again, it's so the horses wouldn't look repetitive when ganged up on a sheet for printing. After some more research, I rendered the saddles, bridles, equipment, etc. of the regiment I'm set on depicting - the Indian horse regiments during the 19th century. The regiments may have some visual cues important to their specific look and I drew these in different layers so I can revise along the way. Currently, I'm in the stage where I'm mucking about the riders' poses. I plan to have them holding various weapons so I guess I'll be spending some time sketching the poses some more. So, that's all I've got for the moment. Enjoy!
